I get that feeling myself. It's too bad that blind partisanship overcomes logical thought in so many people. If Obama ran into a burning building to save some orphan kids, the far right would be cackling and complaining about that too. Instead of thinking of ways to bring this country together, they'd rather rip it apart, every single time.

I can see Republicans being happy about not getting the olympics b/c they were worried the heartland would end up paying for it for years like Montreal or seeing no probable long-term economic benefits like China, but if the general GOP consensus is just happy to see a self-adoring Democratic president fail on the world stage than it shows how pathetic the party has become. A bigger loss than the olympics in the long-run imo.

I disagree.. With as corrupt as Chicago politics is, the Olympics would have been nothing but a sinkhole of money with the people of the entire state taking it up the collective rear end in paying for it.

I don't have a problem with Obama attempting to help, but honestly it was a stupid thing to do unless he was 99% sure Chicago had a chance.. they weren't even close and he looks like an idiot. Oprah, Michelle, and Obama and you were LAST place?

I think the main problem is that people are looking for one simple explanation as to why Chicago wasn't selected and there isn't one so the partisan inclined are blaming Obama as the obvious target. Had the same result occurred (and that is probable) he would be roundly condemned for not going.

Fighting between the IOC and USOC over revenue shares (and an apparent determination among some IOC members to punish the US for this), the shuffling around of USOC board members, sympathy votes for Tokyo/Madrid, and the voting style of the selection process itself caused Chicago to be eliminated first.

Most of the IOC didn't want it to go down that way because of the risk of permanently alienating what are by far the most valuable revenue streams and sponsorships which are US based.

I was in Atlanta for that fucking fiasco and out a lot of hard work into that shit.

I did the database for every volunteer that participated in the Olympic effort.

I paid good money for tickets and did what I was supposed to do and took the train to the stadium.

What happened? The train died in between stations, it was a blistering hot day and they kept us in that sweltering packed train for 3 fucking hours.

Needless to say we missed the venue and they refused to give us tickets to another event or refund the money.

Nothing but a scam all around.

As I said before, this isn't just about hating Obama, but also hate of Chicago, a minority and Democrat run city with poverty, high crime rates, and gun bans. Plenty of reasons for the Right Wing to hate the city and not want anything good to happen to it.

Well I am conservative (not Republican), but any way you slice it, it is bad for the US not to have won the games. It doesn't matter which city or who the President is. It is humiliating for the US to send the President on such a high-profile campaign and lose on the vote so badly (this isn't a slam on Obama either, by the way). I wonder if Obama knew the bid was in trouble and that is why he tried to personally pitch for it.

There was no winning over right wingers on this one, but also on MTP was discussion about how Obama's failure to get the olympics will probably be overlooked compared to the Weekly Standard and similar righties cheering America's loss. That'll make great tape in 2010 and onward.
