Since when did the "prestige" of the presidency become associated with making a bid for the Olympics? It implies that anything the President of the United States wants shoud be his for the asking...and his not getting it is somehow a reflection of loss of his personal prestige.

The US has lost bids before, and will probably lose more in the future. From what I've read, a lot of people (including most of the White House press corps), misread all the signals leading up to the selection. The Olympic Committee wanted to award the games to a Latin American country. It may have been a lost cause for Obama to go but it doesn't represent anything like a "smack down".

Right wing response "Obama blew a chance to bring the Olympics and millions of dollars to the US, create shovel ready jobs now, and provide a boost both economically and to the standing of the US in the world at large. He didn't even try. He's such a failure."

it's pretty much status quo for the POTUS *not* to do this.

Da mayor called in a favor. Obama would have had to turn his back on a bunch of supporters who helped him get to where he is today and who he'll need again to get re-elected.
