Since when did the "prestige" of the presidency become associated with making a bid for the Olympics? I thought that MTP had a good take on the issue... that it shows how much power Valerie Jarrett has within the White House that she could get Obama to make this unprecedented move to put himself out there as POTUS, risking face loss without knowing the outcome.

Obama doesn't go, Chicago doesn't win bid.
Right wing response "Obama blew a chance to bring the Olympics and millions of dollars to the US, create shovel ready jobs now, and provide a boost both economically and to the standing of the US in the world at large. He didn't even try. He's such a failure."
it's pretty much status quo for the POTUS *not* to do this.
