My little launch 360 passed away today. Is it worth calling MS to see if it would fix it even though the warranty is up?

Usually the repair costs for out of warranty consoles is around $100. With a brand new arcade model being only $200 I'd be more apt to jump on that.

Circuit City has (had?) arcades for $160.

Good luck finding one now. I went to CC looking for a one last week, and they didn't have much of anything. He's in a less populated area though, so he may have better luck.

I went with a buddy of mine last week, they still had tons, although they were keeping them up front so it looks sold out in the games section.

Just ask.

Great news! I turned it on again just to see if it would work again and I got....THE RED RING OF DEATH MUAHAHAHA!!!!....and my power supply had a green light. That means that MS will fix it for free. Looks like my 360 might be brought back to life . But I have a question. Are they starting to just replace these old units with new ones?

Dell is doing 20% off coupons now I believe. This seems to be a regular occurrence with them of late.

From what I understand they have a certain time period they set where they'll try and fix your existing console. If they can't fix it in time, they'll send you a refurb of a slightly newer model.

Wow. People consider 4 year old consoles as being "old" now? My 13 year old N64 is old. So is my Saturn and Sega Master System. This must be Microsoft engineering at its worst.

I think you are out of the extended warranty timeframe.

The lady over the phone said I was covered. I think its set up to where if you get three lights and a green light on the power supply you are covered even if you console is past its warranty.

Well, hopefully that works out for you. I had a RROD on my launch unit a couples weeks ago and found several articles saying that as of 2/2/2009 MS was officially done with the extra 3 year warranty for launch units. I never ended up calling to to verify because mine miraculously came back to life and seems to be working fine now.

My XBOX, PS1, N64 and SNES all still work. WTF is it with the current generation consoles sucking so much in the hardware longevity department?

I really don't see why you guys have problems. Me and probably 8 of my close personal friends all have launch 360s. No problems.

My launch 360 is back to RRODing. I just spent a while on the phone with them. First guy said they would cover the repair because I purchased it in December 06 which was wrong. I told him it was a launch one. He sent me to the next guy who had me hook it up and do the power supply test. Then he said there were problems with the system and he couldn't get the repair through. But, he said I could do it online and if that doesn't work, call back.

I tried to do it online and it wanted to charge me $105. I didn't like that so called back. Another lady tried to enter it and wasn't able to either without a CC. Then she realized it was out of the 3 year extended warranty period. So, looks like I won't be getting a new one.

MBrown, did you ever get your repair initiated for free?

She never asked for any code. She just said that it was under the extended warranty. Should I double check?

I'm in the process of getting mine replaced for a RRoD right now. Can't recall when I purchased it though. :-/

While, I too, I'm with him. Heck, I got mines before launch, and other than the noise it makes, it works fine. I did have the RROD after I lost power, but it went away after I pulled the power cord out of the surge protector.
