The dude jams his pocket watch in the time machine and kaboom all the bad guys are gone, they dont even attempt to explain the ending

Actually the story was about the plight of the working class vs the wealthy upper class, and then taken to the extreme. Nothing about war, as WW1 wouldn't happen for another 19 years. The book mentions wars in the general sense though. That book is one of my favourite stories.

I hate to disagree with Russ but the original movie wasn't all that great either. Not saying it was bad, just not that great. George Pal movies all look the same to me ie: War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide, Time Machine, etc.

Unfortunately the new movie deviates from the book even more than the original did. Check out the time machine's website to see this yourself. Uber-Morlock? No Weena? Living on cliff-side huts? A deceased wife? The butchered story is a best-to-wait-for-video deal.

I don't like, or dislike him. He's just lousy at his job. Read his review of this movie for a clue of just how bad he is. Every one of his criticisms apply equally well to the original version, which is nearly universally acknowledged as one of the best science fiction movies of that era.


um maybe he's judging it by this era's stadards m..kay? why bother remaking a movie if you don't bother updating it for the times

Ebert panning it is all the confirmation I need that it's worth seeing. That blob wouldn't know a good movie if it jumped up and bit him on his third chin.

Special effects were decent. Acting was bad. It felt like they rushed this one out. Too bad, they just ruined a classic.

Excellent points. The original came out in 1960, which was right about the time that the cold war began to become prevalent in the collective consciousness. It was replayed throughout the 60's and, for those of us who grew up in that era, it's impact went well beyond simple entertainment, and still does.

I too was disappointed. Oh well.

At least I walked away with the feeling that we, today, are not quite as advanced as we think we are. Compared to the future, we are rather puny. I kind of feel like Im living in a modified version of the late 1800s. Operating my mechanical machine to make my way home and type this up....sheesh.

Holy crap...do you really hate this man you've never met that much? Jesus Christ. :frown:

Didn't ebert also recently have some cancer surgery? show a little respect.

Why do you guys hate him so much? He knows his stuff when it comes to film, and not only has opinions on movies (like all of us) but is well educated in film as well. I don't always agree with him for sure (didn't like his review of LOTR for one) but I still respect him as a critic. I love it when he slams that idiot Roeper on their show too and shows how much of an idiot Roeper is...
Ebert is also a big supporter of widescreen on home formats like DVD and is outspoken with it which makes the industry listen..another reason I respect him, he wants to put an end to the evil that is pan & scan ("modified to fit your TV")

i never saw the original or read the book, but i just saw the movie...i guess it was ok, not great...left a question in my mind, hopefully someone will be able to answer:

Jeremy Irons (albino dude with the bulging telekinetic brain) explains something to Guy about the use of his time machine, sounded to me something along the lines of you made this world the way it is due to your time travel...or something to that extent...am i interpreting that correctly?..if so...how did his time travel cause that future? *boggle*...or if i interpreted wrong, could someone explain what he meant?

also, if he was able to read minds, how come he didn't foresee that sucker punch coming from Guy?
