I would think China understands that at this point they can't let Trump save too much face, they got to keep the screws in there for a little bit longer. They are too smart not to realize this. It should be interesting how this plays out.

Maybe, but I tend to doubt it. I think the primary problem here is a total loss of credibility for the US. There's no point in making substantial concessions to Trump that you actually plan on following through on because there is no reason to expect the US will abide by your agreement.

China's playbook from Trump I is probably the best bet for people here. Make a deal with Trump that he can brag about and then just ignore it and don't do any of the things you promised.

A post-Trump United States can only be trustworthy for four years.
That is not enough. It may begin to thaw relations, but it will NEVER go back to what it was.
MAGA would need to cease to exist for us to stand a chance in the world again.

And the longer it takes us to... move past them, the more the world will forget they could ever trust us.
Someday it will not even be an option, as there will be no one left who remembers the good times.

Not only that but even if the Trust is regained under a future administration, some damage may be permanent.

In Canada Car dealer Association is arguing we should allow EU standard Cars in Canada. Right now they have to be certified to US standards.

But skipping that and allowing EU certified cars straight into Canada would be a big boon to Canadian Consumers, and big blow to US car manufactures from increased competition.

If this happens, it won't be rolled back, even when a more sane administration returns in the USA.

I doubt there will be fair midterms, let alone fair elections by 2028.
