Looks like the WH is floating a “delay” of the auto tariffs. Unless the Mexicans and Canadians want to go through this every month for four years I would suggest saying no. If the hit is coming better just to take it now and be done.

The White House has completely undermined its credibility and negotiating position. Canada and Mexico would be mistaken to take the half loaf when they can use their leverage to punish Trump.

Well well well if it isn't the consequences of their own actions.

Doesn’t sound like the call with Trudeau went all that well. They are supposed to talk again tomorrow.
From the reporting I've seen Trump was told take them all off or we aren't budging. And his post on TS seems to indicate he got spanked.

Although Trump has a rich history of being a shitty CEO and dealmaker, he's got CA and MX over a barrel.
U.S. imports from Canada is about 1/5 of their GDP. Our imports from Mexico is nearly 1/3 of their GDP.
Nobody wins this dumb trade war, but MX in particular plunges into a recession if Trump doesn't back down. Unfortunately he believes in tariffs like he believes in cruelty and racism, so I wouldn't want to play a game of chicken with this moron.

By comparison, U.S. exports to each of these countries is about 1% of our GDP. Of course, consumers are gonna FO fairly soon that Donny is increasing everyone's prices for produce. (Whether they actually connect the dots is rather debatable still. For MAGA, the only thing that matters is that Donny is "strong," the border is "closed" and brown people are being detained and deported.)

So while CA is putting on a good game face (and I don't blame them), both countries are incentivized to give Donny a "win" on paper so that he doesn't blow up everyone's economies.

I bet China is willing to beat whatever offer the tariff+ prices will be, for both purchases and sales.

With Canada it isn’t just about the trade now. His constant demand for annexation has turned it into something else. They also don’t want to be extorted every month with irrational demands or for constant economic concessions just to keep the status quo. Everybody has a limit before they say “fuck you” and simply walk regardless.

Obviously CA and MX will need to pivot to EU+Asia, but China has no demand for autos from either country. It'll also take a lot of time for CA and MX to move away from such a U.S.-reliant relationship. A painful recession could arrive much sooner than that.

(And yes, China's fingerprints have been all over the global South for some time now.)
