It's interesting ....Why only 10% on China and 25% against Canada and Mexico? Basically, this is a slap on the wrist for an autocratic regime and a body blow to a democracy that is arguably our best ally. Who are all these “whales” buying up 95% of Trumps and Melania's meme coins? entities seeking to buy influence? proxies for the Chinese government? buying themselves lower tariffs by enriching Trump personally? We know that Elon Musk has strong business reasons for wanting to treat China gently.
And Trump keeps calling Canada's bilateral trade surplus a "subsidy" which makes no fucking sense at all ... of course lol!
It’s true that Canada runs a trade surplus with the United States, selling more to us than it buys. But this surplus is entirely caused by Canadian energy exports, mainly oil to the U.S. upper Midwest:
Trump, however, routinely lies (Duh!) and overstates the size of this surplus by a factor of two or three.
Fentanyl pouring across our northern border, which wouldn’t justify tariffs even if it were happening - which it is NOT happening
Imposing steep tariffs on Canada and Mexico is just to show that he can — that it’s essentially a dominance display. And all the people pointing out that it’s a terrible idea probably only reinforced his determination to show that he’s in charge and smarter than anyone else.
The American voters have allowed our political system to be attacked and eroded and we are now at the point where our elected government is both corrupt and not able to co-exist peacefully with others, even our best friends. Our civil service is being decimated and replaced with loyal subjects, and we are now beginning to abuse our trusted partner nations for no reason. Sound familiar? Playbook recently updated by Putin. half our country's populace is becoming a bunch of nihilistic selfish democracy-doubters and can't parse the complexity of this situation. Democrats need to bring suit against Trump for abrogating treaties he is bound to uphold by the black-letter Constitution.
