I got a really easy A in Chem 1A and Chem 1B at UC Berkeley because I already knew 80+% of the material from my high school chem class, maybe 90%. Mr. Straus (high school chem teacher) was fantastic, knew his subject thoroughly, was super good at explaining it in every single class. I dug the lab stuff, titration, moles, principles of ionization, valence, periodic table, lada lada. Unfortunately never took anything beyond Chem 1A and 1B, no biology at all, no organic chemistry. For the flip side I remember thinking I was hot shit because I had a 98 in HS chem. Got a fucking 10/100 on my first college chem midterm. Big difference in difficulty between Texas public high schools and the University of California system.
Had to drop the class and self-study the rest of the quarter to get up to an acceptable level in the subject but did manage an A- when I made a second attempt at the course.
I dug my honors freshman calculus course, got 100 on the midterm! Teacher was great, later became head of the math department.
