So Microwaves and Instant Pots are exempt because they're "electronics"?

No. I don't believe they're included. Basically phones, computers and computer components and accessories (displays, modems, printers, flash drives, etc.)

Say what you will about tariffs or the strategy/math behind them but no one can deny the level of incompetence there has been with the rollout and the implementation as nothing other than amazing. The common retort from the right I hear is, “at least he’s trying”. Because when dealing with the worlds economy it’s the participation trophy level effort that you want to see taking place./eyeroll

Incompetent doesn’t begin to describe how bad Trump and his admin is, how about MAGA incompetent? Can we introduce that descriptor into the political lexicon?

There seems to be some mixed reporting in Canada. This article from April 10 says the reason Trump ‘paused’ tariffs was because countries that hold U.S. Treasury bonds, led by Canada, threatened advised Trump that they could sell their bonds and destroy the United States economy.

A slow, coordinated sell-off isn’t a bluff; it’s a quiet gut punch that would take the US YEARS to recover from.

Snopes, as of yesterday, seems unsure but leaning towards not true:

Carney’s hardly likely to admit it, is he? If he actually wants to win a parliamentary majority on April 28, maybe Carney should admit it?

There are claims that you can verify this by looking at publicly available trading totals. The Canadian Press seems to agree except for saying that similar moves occur annually.

I’m not doing my own research on this one.

Orange man is so weak, after Chinese oficiais having said that they don't about losing the murrican market.

Many say that Xi Jinping likes to think of himself as a person who measures achievements on a generational scale, not by business quarters. They that, but their first priority is preservation of their own individual power. That’s not a generational effort, it’s very much a day-to-day thing, especially with a US president who seems to delight in a pure chaos agency.

Tariffs used to be a tool every country used in normal times to manage their own protectionist needs. If a country needs to protect (for example) the cheese industry, then they’ll tariff imported cheese as much as they can manage, without getting slapped with a retaliatory tariff on milk (used to make cheese). So there have always been small tariff negotiations everywhere, driven by a country’s analysis of how much they can get do while protecting their own industry without provoking too many reciprocal tariffs.

Trump’s reasoning seems to be entirely this: if we have a 40% trade deficit with a country, then they must be somehow tariffing us 40%, so we’re going to tariff them 40% to gain “fairness”.

In addition to the retaliation, Trump seems to think these tariffs could be an unrealized source of revenue to replace income tax. He’s gotten the hair brained idea of an “External Revenue Service”. He thinks he’s found the magical perfect tool of capitalism. He can just say, “Give me this much money!”, and they have to give it to you. To him, it’s even better than a casino! Because he's a monumental dumbfuck and a shitty fucking businessman, his only idea for how to fund things is “squeeze someone else until they pay for it”. So basically, it’s retribution against other countries, trying to earn revenue off this retribution, and abolishing the IRS in favor of the ERS. He forgets that the “customers” aren’t a captive audience. They can seek out better deals elsewhere, or choose to do without. The thinking is beyond stupid, but here we are, and this is what we are dealing with.

No, he actually knows that is not true. He views the trade deficit as a balance sheet loss for America. That all the money we spend buying products from these countries ends up in some government bank account on the other end somehow. His ideological preference would be to zero out the trade balance with the entire planet though he can be diverted via his other non-tariff passions namely corruption and bribery. After all as the boss does he not deserve a cut?

A lot of people have checked out of Twitter, but it has just been hysterical seeing all the right winger accounts debase themselves endlessly defending his words or actions as brilliant one moment only to then have to explain why his doing the polar opposite a day later is even more brilliant! XD

In the eyes of the Church of MAGA, loyalty is the only currency.
A requirement for joining the zealotry is to gouge one's own lying eyes out.

USA is destined to pay a moron premium for generations to follow.
As Putin shattered the military order following WW2, Trump has shattered the US economic order following WW2.
The world is entering a new era of chaos and uncertainty. Which is definitely the opposite of peace and prosperity.

America risks ‘moron premium’ after Trump’s tariffs chaos

After Liz Truss’s ill-fated mini-Budget blew up the bond market three years ago, the former prime minister was forced into an embarrassing climbdown.
As well as sacking her chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, she also quickly unwound her package of unfunded tax cuts to keep the markets at bay.
However, despite the radical reversal, borrowing costs did not return to their old levels and Britain was left paying what was unkindly dubbed a “moron premium”.
The US is now at risk of suffering a similar fate.

Phones and computers. Electronics.

"Electronics imported to the United States will be exempt from President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs, according to a US Customs and Border Protection notice posted on Friday." CNN

edit: sorry. I left out the link to the notice. Have added it.

Here is the U.S. Customs and Borders notice defining the exemptions but I'm not going to look up all those numbers.

"The guidance also includes exclusions for other electronic devices and components, including semiconductors, solar cells, flat panel TV displays, flash drives, memory cards and solid-state drives used for storing data..."

Remember the loving tariffs? The amazing tariffs that will make everything great and earn us so much money?

Shouldn’t someone be collecting those wonderful tariffs?

Shitlol

“Thanks to a technical glitch, Donald Trump’s tariffs haven’t even been collected at U.S. ports.

On Friday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that an entry code in the U.S. system for American ships to use to have their freight exempted from tariffs isn’t working, and “the issue is being reviewed.” As a result, no tariffs are being collected by the U.S. government for the time being.“

“If there were doubts about the tariffs being a wise policy, those have increased several times over the fact that U.S. authorities can’t even implement them.“

Not to mention you need places to store stuff while you wait on the tariff payment.
