The only good thing I can see happening if this is true is the possible DESTRUCTION of the Republican Party. Ah, but I will not hold my breath.

one would hope but right wing propaganda is going to do its thing and a certain part of the population will gleefully gobble it up

it's a whole lot easier to complain about things than to try to fix them

hopefully the part of the electorate that tends to not vote becomes much more motivated and has a long memory

Watching two people I absolutely loathe beat the shit out of each other is not an unpleasant diversion from everything else that's going on.
We find joy where we can in these trying times. And I love to see this shit!

It is a dilemma. If people have been fed misinformation and lies for a long time and have received poor education, should you still try to make them a better society? and if yes how so?
The only functional path is to conquer them in war.
Anything else leaves a rabid dog hankering for a bite.

And how does 'fair' trade look to you? Trump put on 10% tariff on Australia's trade, despite Australia importing much more from America than America imports from Australia. So maybe fair trade for Australia would be to whack on a sizable tariff on all American goods... you know to help rebuild Australia and to stop America screwing us over... despite our soldiers helping you out in Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War I and II and then also in Afghanistan.

In this America First policy of yours that you seem to love, is there any space for long term allies? Or are they just collateral damage of American winning?
Thats the most hilarious part. "A few weeks of pain" to get us...right back to where we were before the pain, at best. More likely, they'll be worse off as markets pivot away from a mercurial and schizophrenic trading partner.

And because MAGA doesn't understand anything, let alone "free trade", they'll call it a win and claim trump is amazing despite the fact that by any objective measure he's a giant failure and millions of times worse than biden or Harris could be on their worst days.

Truly pigeon management.

The most understated part of this.

The US will not be seen as a reliable long term destination hub for intellectuals, innovators, investors, scientists and tech companies.

Another adventure of JD Vance, skilled international diplomat.

China lashes out at JD Vance for calling Chinese people ‘peasants’

Speaking to Fox News last Thursday, Vance defended President Donald Trump’s market-hammering tariffs and railed against the “globalist economy.”

“What has the globalist economy gotten the United States of America? And the answer is, fundamentally, it’s based on two principles – incurring a huge amount of debt to buy things that other countries make for us,” Vance told news show “Fox & Friends.”

“To make it a little more crystal clear, we borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture.”

Asked about Vance’s comments at a regular news briefing Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said: “It’s both astonishing and lamentable to hear this vice president make such ignorant and disrespectful remarks.”

“This true ‘peasant’ who came out of rural America seems to have a lack of perspective,” said Hu Xijin, the influential former editor-in-chief of state-run tabloid Global Times, in a post on microblogging site Weibo. “Many people are urging him to come and see China for himself.”

A hashtag on Vance’s remarks became the top trending topic on Weibo on Monday night. By Tuesday afternoon, it had racked up 140 million views.

This really is the dumbest timeline. These people are literally as ignorant as MAGA rednecks, and they run their mouths like they do the country - with stupid.

I think it's becoming clear as a sunny day that different populations in America want a different type of country and there's no 1 that fits all.

Might as well just split into:

1. MAGA Sweatshopistan,
2. Floriduh and Peachistan,
3. Carolinaistan,
4. Tornadoistan
5. Texasistan
6. Western Coastal states.
7. North East Corridor states
8. New Canada
9. Greater Mexico.

No way that's as dumb as what we're going through right now.. nope.. absolutely no fricking way!

Apparently Elonia Muck is a "car assembler" according to Navarro.

Automobile tariffs kick in at midnight tonight. Whatever bounce the markets see today will be evaporated tomorrow.

I wanted to reply to you but it required much more thought than a my normal cynical/ sarcastic post.

Bottom line education is only possible if people are willing to be educated, in my experience, people with strong prejudices rarely fall into that camp. I include myself in that number, there's no way I will ever be re-educated about History, Science, Human Sexuality and Tech.

And overly religious people prefer religious education over standardized stuff.. infact it's not uncommon for parents to totally brainwash their kids once home and say their teacher is a liar.. teaching them unholy and ungodly stuff.. and then reprogram them.

So as much as you and @DAPUNISHER and the optimists here are hoping that's the solution.. it's very naive to think its success is very limited in a polarized world.

That said even 1-3% who are educated are responsible for every technological innovation in human history. The rest just enjoy it or whine about how they're left behind and would rather burn it all down and go back to the way things were.

That's it?

In this day and age those are landslide election victory numbers.

Some perspective on Trump 2.0 approval. The only person who did worse so far was Trump 1.0.

My expectation is that later this month or early next there will be a major leg down once people get a load of what tariffs mean for them personally. We'll see if his approval drops even below 1.0 at that point when people are paying a lot more for stuff if they can find it at all.

idk... I haven't given alot of thought into this, but I feel sales taxes are more reasonably than income taxes. As long as the minimum wage was boosted, imagine if the income tax was zero, but the sales tax was say 30%. Or even higher. There are so many dodgy schemes for rich folk to avoid paying income tax. Ok noone pays income tax. The rich folk still likes their nice things, and their nice houses needs a craptonne of heating etc etc. All of this nice stuff has hefty sales tax on it.

I know... there will be some loop hole so that some sales taxes can be avoided... but while we are at it... maybe we can make land taxes completely replace company taxes. Another area rife with dodgy accounting.
Income tax loopholes are considerably a problem in this. Fair share is key in this. During the 1950's taxes on the super wealthy were 5+ times what they are now, we need to bring that back. The scales are tipped for the rich now. This is unconscionable.
