Steam has to be the worst idea in a long time!

Why should we have to be connected to ANYTHING to play a game that we purchase at the store and own a CD of? Sure for updates I could connect, but why stay connected and eat my bandwidth for my network? That's just stupid...screw you valve if you do this. Now I'm starting to like Doom3 more and more :disgust:

Yeah, how dare those greedy developers charge you for a service. I get my food for free. I get clothing for free. I get a roof over my head for free. And I damn well better get to play a game for free!

well, if you buy the game in the store and own the CD why do you have to pay more money to be connected to a sharing service to play the game? That would eat my network bandwidth alot. What if you have dialup? What about people with no internet

Jeez, same re-hashed arguement from a couple of weeks ago!

There will be different levels of ways to pay for HL2.

1. Buy the full version, including SP/MP from a shop, download updates as/when (probably about $50)
2. Buy the SP only version from the shops, download updates as/when (probably about $30)
3. Don't buy anything from the shops, pay $10 per month, and download it all online.

You don't have to pay to play. If you only want to test it for a month, pay out $10 for 1 month's steam, download it and try it out. If you don't like it, cancel your subscription and you're out $10.
If you only want single player, you're on dialup etc, get the single-player only game, you're out $30.
If you're going to be playing SP/multiplayer a lot, get the full version. You're out $50, and you get to play forever.

Aaargh!

Confused, you expect me to pay $10 to play the game for a month? What are you, greedy? I guess I'll just warez it. Games shouldn't cost more than a couple bucks. That's all it costs to produce a CD.

It costs less than $1 to produce the actual physical items that video games come with(box, cd, manual). However, most games cost $5million to make, which requires typically 200,000 copies sold for the publisher to break even. Games should cost more than a couple of bucks, $40-50 is the right price. I dont agree with monthly fees unless they are for vaild reasons, like a persistent state world, and monthly content additions.

Monthly fees for HL2 (or so I can infer from previous posts)? :Q Well, guess I won't be buying that...

You pay the monthly fee and get the game, SP/MP, any add-on packs they make and whatever bonus content.

So if after 4 months they released a $20 add on pack, you'd get it free from Steam.

Thus $50 for game, $20 for add on pack, $70 total.

That's 7 months of Steam (7x$10 = $70)

Not all that bad. As long as they keep releasing new content (TF2 maybe?)

Also isn't the fee only for using steam servers. If you use another server you won't have to pay.

This could be bad for Valve if people all over the internet don't understand the way that Steam apparently works. It might just seem like a knee-jerk reaction, but if enough people are knee-jerking, it doesn't matter how it really works, no one will buy it in the first place.
