I'm running a 5 year-old 400W 20-pin PSU on my AMD64 rig with a DFI LANParty UT nF4 Ultra-D motherboard and it works like a cha

I used to come on here a lot a long time ago, but have since forgotten my u/n or pw. But now I needed a little help picking a good psu that wont break the bank

Here are the parts I have:

Chaintech VNF4 Ultra Nforce4 Ultra (24 pin obviously)
AMD 3200+ Venice
Seagate SATA 7200 rpm
1gb corsair value ram pc3200
eVGA Geforce 7800 pci-e 256mb (requires at least 450W psu)

I am looking for something that wont cost over $70 but will still put out. Any suggestions?

EDIT: nm found the thread the other guy started about a $75 24pin psu, ill just find something from there

currently on an ageing rambus P4 system (stop laughing!) using an Enermax 465w EG465AX psu and contemplating upgrading to:

- Abit AN8 Ultra
- AMD Venice 3000+ Retail
- 1Gb OCZ Premier Dual Channel Kit DDR400 PC3200 CL 2.5-3-3-7
- Galaxy Nvidia GeForce 6600GT 128Mb DDR3 PCI-E TV DVI

..will my PSU handle the upgrade as i think it has a 20pin whereas the board has a 24pin iirc.

Assuming you have one of these:

...there's no question that the PSU is strong enough to power your new setup. You just need to check with the manufacturer to make sure the board supports 20-pin PSU's (it probably does).

To quote from the AN8 Ultra manual available on the Abit website:

NOTE: This 24-pin power connector "ATXPWR1" is compliant to the former 20-pin type. Pay attention to the orientation when attaching the power cord. (Pin-11, 12, 23, and 24 should be left un-connected).

...so it should work fine

Man this is confusing and i just bump into this thread until now. I just got the following to upgrade my PC.
MSI K8N NEO4-F
Chaintech GeForce 6200 PCI-E

The Mobo has the new 24 pin PSU plug but i only have a Antec True-power 350wt PSU, Will i need an adapter that needs to connect to the Video Card or no?

No. I can't imagine a 6200 requiring any supplemental power whatsoever.

Now I dont have a 24pin power connector. Its 20pin, AND there is no plug on the videocard to provide power. The x800xls run directly off the PCI express bus

To date this is probably the highest power consuming video card to run directly off the PCI express bus. Well let me tell you, everything works perfecly fine with the 20 pin PSU and the 12v rail is 18A, well 18 Antec amps

For all those considering building DFI NF4 systems, DFI now requires you to have a 24 pin powersupply that is rated for at least 480 watts. No ifs, ands, or buts, they will not give you tech support on their forum unless you have a power supply that meets those requirements.

is it possible to fry the PSU with that setup?

the reason i ask is because two brand new PSUs fried in my system within hours of running.

There's really no way to say for sure without knowing your system specs, and your PSU ratings (or at least the model so that the ratings can be looked up)...although I hope that this third PSU you're trying is at least better than the previous 2 that died.

Ok I just ordered the following system:

AMD64 3000+ venice
1 gb corsair value select
EVGA 6600gt
chaintech VNF4 ultra
Seagate 80GB SATA
antec smartpower 2.0 400W

Everything seemed fine at first since I ordered a 2.0 PS from Atec, and 400W in enough power for this rig.
Problem is...the EVGA 6600GT doesn't have an external power connector (to plug in the 6-pin PCI-E) so
it's pulling all of its power from the PCI-E slot. The antec has dual rail with 14A and 15A on it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the CPU, mobo and GPU will put all the power from 1 rail? And the other rail will only
be used for the HD and DVD? Seems like a waiste...Plus I don't think 15A is enough to power the CPU/GPU/mobo...

Can someone help me on this? Will my PS have enough juice?

I'm not sure, but I don't think the PCI-E bus draws its power from the +12V rail. If this is the case, then your graphics card is not taxing the +12V rail at all.

At any rate, that PSU should be fine for your setup.

I didn't read all the replies (323 by last count) but what I read sounds like if you have a AGP mobo, you don't even need to think about 24 pin PSU. 24 pin is just for PCIe boards. Is that right? Do you need a dual 12v or even an ATX12v psu?

That's essentialy true. However, if you happen to find yourself in the market for a new PSU for whatever reason, it doesn't really make sens in most cases to settle for anything less than a 24-pin, ATX12V model, because this is what we're moving towards in the future, so if you're getting a new one, you might as well get one that will last for awhile.

I need a good recomendation for a MSI Neo4 nForce4, venice 3000+ (gonna overclock it), pci-e 6800 or greater card (one for now maybe two later), 2 sata, 1 dvdrw, couple case fans... thanks
