The Ultimate Hot Deal: Blue from American Express

Hi. I think this topic has been brought up before in this forum (a few months ago maybe? or maybe it was in another Anandtech forum?), but I think it warrants mentioning again since, in my opinion, this is the hottest deal in town.

Essentially, Blue from AMEX is the ultimate credit card to have for price matching. Under Blue's Best Value Guarantee, "you'll pay the lowest price available on items purchased with the Card. If you see a covered item advertised in print for less than you paid within 60 days of the purchase date, we'll refund the difference to your account, up to $250 per item" (as stated on the Blue web site at www.americanexpress.com/blue). That "advertised in print" part applies to both B&M stores and on-line stores. And it's this ability to price match anywhere on-line that makes Blue such a hot deal because that's where all the low prices are to be found.

In a nutshell, the lowest price I can find either in a printed ad or on-line for any given item I want to purchase (there's fine print for what's not covered) is the price I will end up paying (once I receive the refund check from AMEX). I've had my Blue card since October 1999 and I've used the Best Value Guarantee several times already. The Best Value Guarantee is great for computer components because 1) they have such a wide range of prices on the Internet and 2) their prices can change a lot in 60 days (especially memory and CPUs).

For example, I can go to Best Buy down the street, pay list price for a video card, go home and hop on-line, find the store on Pricewatch with the lowest price for the video card, print out the page showing the price, fax my original receipt and a copy of web page into AMEX, and then wait for my money to arrive in about two weeks. Cha-ching!

The only caveats are that you are limited to a $250 refund per item (as stated above) and a total of $1000 per year, and you need to file your claim no later than 30 days after you find the lower price (but you can file as many claims as you want if the price keeps going down as long as it's within the 60 days!).

Anyway, I hope this info helps some of you. With this card, every purchase is a hot deal!

Tonet

P.S. I think the Best Value Guarantee applies to other AMEX cards as well (but they may have an annual fee).

So you're saying that this is better for price guarantees than arguing for 1/2 hour with the Staples manager? Sign me up!

I have blue and haven't used this feature yet.

How do that factor in the super high shipping prices of some of the pricewatch dealers? Have you ever had them reject a pricematch saying that the store didn't qualify? How do they protect themselves from someone editing some html to get a super price?

Also, with Blue, they now have something called private payments. Basically, you get a one time use credit card # that links the charges to your normal statement. This is great for dealing with somewhat less than reputable firms, becoming a "new" user again at many sites (where you need a new credit card to be a new user) or to make sure that some site doesn't set you up for some sort of annual billing.

Well, its a great feature, but the problem is that we "Anandtech" this feature, they'll discontinue it right away (can you imagine AMEX willing to tank millions of dollars on pricematching???).

Hope it lasts, but likely, if enought people use it, the faster it'll be taken away.

Just one comment: you would not want to pay list price for a video card, or anything...since there IS that $1000 limit per year, it would be to your benefit to shop the item for the lowest price first; otherwise you could easily max out that $1000 very quickly.

Lex Luthor:

All of my claims have been accepted no questions asked. But I guess you're right, someone could print out a fake ad. I don't know how they deal with that issue. They probably check your source somehow to check that they're legitimate. I think AMEX probably figures that even if people did scam them, it's okay because they have that $250 per item limit and $1000 per year limit.

Regarding shipping, they don't take that into account. That's what makes it so great.

I've spoken to Blue reps several times on this Best Value Guarantee Program just to make sure they didn't think I was scamming them, but it's all legit. They also told me that computer components are the items they get claims on most often.

nodeel - considering the average american is over $5,000 in debt, i think amex would want its card to be "Anandteched". the more people that sign up for their card the better for them.

I think if ya use a COUPON on your purchase, it is NOT covered by that low price guarantee.
Since it states that the ENTIRE amount of the merchandise needs to be purchased using the card.

However...REBATES will be fine

lizardboy -- ack...it crossed my mind _after_ i made the post that too many people filing claims could cause AMEX to think twice about the program. but then i thought about the $250 limit per item and the $1000 limit per year and i figured that was there way of keeping a clamp on things.

well, too late now...sorry.

Many other features with this card worth mentioning:
1.you get a buyers assurance. so if you break or lose you product, theyll replace or get it fixed, up tp 10,000.
2. It doubles your warranty from manufacturer
3. If the vendor you bought from wont take something back, then theyll refund you the money and take the item.

AND NO FEE!!!!

enginjon -- one note: price matching memory/ram across different stores using blue may be slightly more difficult than other things since it may be hard for amex to verify that the memory types are exactly the same, i.e., i doubt you can buy name-brand quality PC133 RAM at one store and then price match against cheapo generic PC133 RAM at another store. they'll probably catch you there. best chance for success is to stay within the same store you originally bought the ram from.

i've pricematched with memory using blue, but only at crucial.com after the price lowered after 60 days.

I am considering changing from NextCard to Amex Blue. I keep a seperate card just for internet services. I was waiting to see if there were any sites offering a reward for signing up through there website. Does anyone know of any type of reward?

YOU GUYS ROCK.

This posting reminded me to check on my SONY digital video camera-- sure thing, I purchased it 1/18, and today (3/14) it has dropped over $130. I just got off the phone with Amex. I just saved $130 off a $560 digital video camera, assuming this goes through. NOW THAT'S A HOT DEAL.

THis will help pay for those Klipsch speakers I was convinced to order....

Enginjon: did you have to submit another application to get "upgraded" to Blue? I just called them and was told there is no way for me to get an upgrade and that I would have to submit a new Blue application to obtain that card.
