my apologies to those forum members who already have a blue card and now worry that because i posted the info on blue everyone and their brother will be getting one to take advantage of the best value guarantee program. as i posted earlier, it did cross my mind that having too many people file claims could, in a worst case scenario, cause amex to shut down the program. but i thought about it again and came up with the following points that tend to get overlooked:
1) amex, like every credit card company, makes a percentage from each store for every purchase made using their card;
2) more amex credit card holders = more credit card debt = more money for amex;
3) the best value guarantee has a $250 per item limit and a total of $1000 per year, so any "abuse" by a particular individual can only go so far; and
4) it's highly unlikely that all blue card holders use the best value guarantee program. and i would bet that of those who do use the program, only a small percentage would probably be willing to take the time to take advantage of the best value guarantee program to its fullest extent (i.e., max out the $1000) like those of us on this forum would.
i figure if there is any real downside to this information getting out to too many people, it's that amex will receive so many claims that they will have to hire more people to handle them all and that we as consumers may have to wait a bit longer to receive our refund checks. but i don't think amex would ever consider shutting down the program, especially since it's one of blue's major selling points (i believe it's even stated explicitly in one of their many tv commercials).
