Because in EVERY SPACE, bullshit propaganda must be addressed and debunked. Simply ignoring, dismissing or even denying them platforms them has MASSIVELY backfired.
The Trump cult only grew
The anti-vax cult only grew
The stop the steal cult only grew
Flat earth belief only grew.
Bullshit conspiracy theories MUST be met head on and an equal or greater effort put into debunking them.
brandolini's law (the bullshit asymmetry principle) means the effort into debunking bullshit will almost always be greater than the effort put into creating the bullshit in the first place.
but yes, you can't let people slide on bullshit.
there's an old guy in my painting class who thinks trump lost 2020 due to 3 million illegal votes. the first few classes i let it slide. the last class, he bitched about kids these days not knowing how to drive manuals. i pointed out that modern autos/DSGs are more efficient, and electric vehicles are direct drive (and more efficient). therefore, there's no need to learn given the technology changes and the limited amount of manuals (~2% of new car sales).
was it a dumb hill to die on? sure. but i grew tired of his bullshit, so anything he said that was wrong i was just going to hammer him on. the most recent class? he didn't bring up his usual political bullshit, and i had a nice time painting without hearing about how america is going downhill, bitching about trump lost unfairly, or how supporting LGBTQ people is wokeness.
i want my painting class to be about painting. everything else? STFU.
