1. Total amount recoverable is not flow rate.
There could be a bazillion barrels recoverable but if you can only recover it at 1 million barrels a day you still have to purchase from foreign sources. Think drinking from a pool with a straw.

2. Amount recoverable says noting about dollar cost of recovery.
If it costs 150 a barrel to recover the oil you would still be better off purchasing the oil from other sources at today's rate.

3. Amount recoverable says nothing about the energy cost.
If it takes a barrel of oil energy equivalent to recover a barrel of you've ended up no better than before.

4. The link you gave says 4.4 billion barrels. The U.S. uses 20 million barrels a day. Assuming you could get the flow rate (see point 1), you would have reserves for a whopping 220 days.

5. Using your non sourced recovery value of 50 billion barrels and assuming points 1, 2 and 3 don't matter, you would have 2500 days of oil, or 6.9 years.

The only source linked said 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels. Which is a relative drop in the bucket, NOT a quick and easy way to achieve oil independence.

Blaming the environmentalists is a way to avoid the more likely explanation that we're probably not drilling there because it's probably not worth it. Similar to ANWR, it's red meat to the "drill baby, drill" folks...but not an actual solution to any problem.

The OP conflates the Bakken recoverable oil reserves with the "oil shale" deposits in the West. "Oil Shale" is not petroleum, and does not contain petroleum. It contains kerogens, which can be processed into petroleum products. The caveat is that it takes large quantities of energy and water to effect the transformation. Energy demands aside, go ask someone out west how much spare water they have these days...

Oil shale, very expensive to exploit. Some interest develops as price goes up. When you're forced to exploit oil shale, you don't usually consider it a good thing.

Also, why all the focus on the foreign oil coming from Saudi Arabia. The single largest exporter of oil to the US is Canada and will be for many, many years.

This thread is now about crazy right wing email forwards.

I stumbled across this awesome site:

http://rightforward.blogspot.com/

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.. Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s:

1. Teaching Math In 1950's
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ?

2. Teaching Math In 1960's
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit?

3. Teaching Math In 1970's
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit?

4. Teaching Math In 1980's
A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

5. Teaching Math In 1990's
A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok.)

I hope this is true.

IMO the best strategy for the USA is to keep buying foreign oil and just sit on our reserves until Oil is about $500 / barrel, then unleash hell! I am so sick of short term a-hole politicians running things. Think long term people!

This thread is now about crazy right wing email forwards.

Oh oh! I get some of those!

Here try this on...

I haven’t slept soundly in days ... my stomach is in knots ... I can’t stop worrying about what’s going on in our nation’s Capitol.

Members of the radical Homosexual Lobby are running rampant in the Senate. They are bragging they will pass the Gay Bill of Special Rights into law within weeks.

After forcing Thought Control through the Pelosi-controlled House last year, the Homosexual Lobby snuck it through the Senate by adding it to the “must-pass” Defense Authorization Bill.

And now that Thought Control has been signed into law, the Homosexual Lobby believes they can use the same tactic to ram through the Gay Bill of Special Rights.

I need your help before it’s too late.

You see, over the winter, outrage from Public Advocate supporters and other pro-family Americans had a powerful impact slowing the advance of the Homosexual Lobby.

But recent victories on Obamacare and other issues have emboldened the Radical Homosexuals to ram this bill through at all costs.

“After all,” they say, “we can’t lose.”

Insiders say the Gay Bill of Special Rights will be ready for a vote any day now.

You and I mobilized against Barney Frank’s version of the bill in the House and we’ve slowed their advance. But now they’re planning a sneak attack -- in the Senate.

Please click this link to sign the petition to your senators. It is vital you sign and submit it at once.

We must show your senators the overwhelming majority of Americans will not tolerate this attempt to force homosexuality into every aspect of our lives.

As you know, the Homosexual Lobby hoards vast treasuries they can unleash at a moment’s notice to drown out our voices.

That’s why I need you to also chip in $10 after you sign your petition.

Your donation will allow me to alert pro-family Americans to what’s going on behind closed doors.

Together, our voices can rise above the noise here in Washington.

We have to act quickly. The Senate is scheming to pass the Gay Bill of Special Rights quickly.

By acting now, we can show them Americans are against the passage of this immoral bill.

Last time, we put pressure on the Republican leadership and killed the bill.

Although we are facing a more liberal House and Senate this time, if we show the strength of pro-family Americans, we may be able to stop the Gay Bill of Special Rights once again.

But I’m worried we may be too late.

Before the 2008 elections, the Homosexual Lobby wined and dined Senators and doled out huge campaign contributions to so-called “moderates” in both parties.

And now that Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid successfully rammed through Obamacare, ultra-liberals in Congress have a pattern to follow for future action.

You and I are all that stand in the way of the Gay Bill of Special Rights becoming law.

Passage of the Gay Bill of Special Rights would create a protected class of citizens based on “sexual orientation.”

Employers would be forced to hire and prevented from firing anyone with who is a member of this new protected class including so called “transsexuals.”

Churches would be forced to hire homosexual youth pastors or face lawsuits for discrimination.

Schools would not be able to fire teachers who suddenly choose to cross dress to better express their “gender identity.”

This has been keeping me up for days.

We have a small window of opportunity before this bill reaches Barack Obama’s desk.

Many Senators supporting this bill are only doing so while it is kept quiet and in the shadows.

And with Obama’s and liberal Democrats’ poll numbers plunging, they are getting more nervous every day.

As soon as pro-family Americans learn about this sneak attack on our treasured values, many politicians will withdraw their support, fearing public backlash.

That’s why it is absolutely critical we ratchet up the pressure now.

The linked petition makes it crystal clear we will not stand for any backdoor deals with the radical homosexuals.

When I flood Washington, D.C., with signed petitions from you and other pro-family Americans, they will have no choice but to listen to us or pay a high price next election.

But if we are going to have any chance of stopping the Homosexual Lobby from passing the Gay Bill of Special Rights, we must act now.

Only through your generous donation will I be able to compete with the radical homosexual tidal wave of special interest cash.

I am giving all I have to this new onslaught -- my money, my time and sometimes my health.

Please sign the petition immediately and chip in with a $10 contribution to help Public Advocate stop the Gay Bill of Special Rights in its tracks.

Radical Homosexuals are emboldened with their recent victory sneaking through Thought Control and now want to pass the entire Homosexual Agenda -- starting with the Gay Bill of Special Rights.

After signing the petition, please chip in with a $10 contribution and help me alert hundreds of thousands of pro-family Americans.

With their voices added to ours the Senate will have no choice but to listen and stop pandering to the Radical Homosexuals -- or face outraged pro-family voters next election.

I still believe you and I can stop the Radical Homosexuals. But if we are going to win this fight, we must act now.

Please click here to sign the petition to your senators.

Thank you and God Bless,

No wonder the kids are having trouble, they're not even teaching math with real words anymore!

from what i recall from memory :
When the oil does not squirt out of the well, it is really not that interesting. What you want is an oil bubble. Not oil in porous rock. Most wells are not empty but the amount of effort and as such energy needed to get the oil out of the ground is higher, maybe even higher then the amount of energy of that extracted oil. Then there are pollutants that need to be removed. It is real simple, if the amount of energy you need to extract that oil is higher then the energy you will get from that oil, it is of no use.
I agree that mostly there is a financial motive. But sometimes the physical efforts are a point of no return.

My sellf I don't care about the oil reserves and such that we recover . I like to look at bigger picture. What is it that powers the earth to be such a life boat. Everthing in nature depends on a chain . Food chain if you will. What do we really know about spaceship earth. Are those oil reserves part of the internal functions of space ship earth . I believe they are. With deserts growing its certainly doesn't look as if those deposits will be renewed with time. . With all the earth quakes in the world one has to wonder . Why more oil isn't spilled into the oceans from such events. Its seems Mother nature has all its players lined up and functional. As long as man is set against nature the only end result counts the devastation of spaceship earth . It is man thats the problem . and man is to ignorant in such matters . Man today protects the weak and deformed so as to exaggerate the problem even further. making laws to protect these people is a long term death sentance for mankind. It is natures way the weak perish. Now that sick blood is running freely . Natural selection among humans died along with it . comes the death of mankind.
