I'm in the Robbery state, I'd have thought it would be murder.
Anyhow, I'm like 10 miles from the border with the Binge drinking state.

The Village I live in is much more "binge drinker" vs "robber"

Wouldn't know about arson...

You must live in an urban part of Pennsylvania. In the rural areas, just the bored firefighters faction or the farmers in need of insurance money faction alone could take the title.

quick Google search for HS graduation rates shows Texas near the top for graduation rates. Yet this says they are the worst.

Makes you wonder what else was just made up...

There's absolutely no reason to commit geography to memory. If you need to know that kind of information, you can look it up as necessary. I don't give two shits where any country is. It doesn't change a single thing. I can still know all about Ukraine without being able to find it on a map. That's why we have look-up tables.

I did great on every geography test I've ever taken, but I still can't tell you where several states are on a map because I purposely and immediately forgot due to the extreme unimportance of knowing that information. It doesn't matter in any capacity. I can, however, design a 16Gbps differential amplifier that makes your video card work, which is what America's education system did for me. You can gloat about being able to read a map, though, if that makes you feel good about yourself.

Seeing that most societies are fundamentally shaped by their geography, and most wars throughout history have essentially been fought over geography, I'd say your outlook is pretty myopic, concerning the overall importance of knowing geography. No understanding of geography means no real comprehension of culture, society, or history.

I can tell you approximately which region any country is from, but I couldn't point it out exactly on a map nor do I find any importance in knowing that information exactly. Not understanding geography is completely different than not committing to memory the GPS coordinates of a city. I know enough to speak intelligently about major cultural or socioeconomic regions, but I see no value in anything beyond that for every day life. I can look it up if I need to know.

Maine is the dumbest? Really?

No, not really. They base that on average SAT scores. The problem is the state with the highest SAT scores, only 5% of students take the SAT so it's not a random sample, while in Maine 93% of students take the test. So Maine scores low because almost everyone there takes the test. Maine has the highest SAT participation rate.

You're called Massholes for a reason. If I had a nickel for every Masshole driving slower than surrounding traffic in the passing lane I could buy and sell you 300,000 times over.

lol @ this. If I had a nickel for every Connectinut going 20+ over the speed limit while weaving in and out of semi's in the right lanes, I'd be rich.

FWIW, I am a mobile employee and use the highways all the time. I hate the drivers your describing, and am not one of them

Connecticut drivers get worse the farther south you go.

That's probably because New York driving habits are rubbing off on the "southerners."

Excuses, excuses

It's scariest on the Merrit. Speed limit 55, if you're not going 65 then you're a speed bump. Even the cops give you dirty looks on the way by!

That's because driving 55 is like watching paint dry.

I don't make the rules. My '09 Corolla loves going 55, increased mpg by a few

It's 55 on the Merritt because getting on is either a stop or a yield, with on 50-100ft of on ramp if you're lucky. Two lanes, people going 80 make it pretty difficult to get on.

Sounds like you scored low on your SAT bro.

Not to defend Texas too much, but it's kinda hard to be the champs of HS graduation when plenty of kids come in unable to speak the language taught. Stack on top of that parents that can't help said kids...

I know it's hard for other people in other states to imagine massive immigration when no one wants in to your shitty state, but try to imagine

Ohio is "Nerdiest"? Is that a bad thing? Living here, I'm not sure what that means. I see a lot more nerdy people in New York than here.

I think they just made something up because they couldn't think of anything else for Ohio.

Of all the possible ways I can think of to rank states on nerdiness, I can't think of one that would put Ohio at the top.

You are completely ignorant about statistic aren't you?

Maine scores very high in the ACT test. The explanation is simple. Only students who plan to compete to get into better colleges are taking the ACT test in Maine, while practically everyone there takes the SAT test. It's not a random sample.

So I take it you didn't score high on the ACT either.

According to several sites, Texas is nowhere near the bottom of high school graduation rates. This is less praise of the Texas education system and more of a statement of how crappy some other states are. That entire map is probably BS.

Except for the fact that the stronger the government influence the higher the standard of living and the healthier and more educated people are.
Weird, huh?

You misplace cause and effect. People gather in larger numbers to share in the wealth of American capitalism. Government grows bigger by sucking down that wealth. Eventually there's a tipping point where the patient has been leeched dry and turns into Detroit or Chicago.

This life cycle should be a case study in the future. To try and avoid the ruin that follows.

Texas was one of the only states to challenge home equity loans saying "they didn't know the collateral was their home". For a long time, Texans could not secure a line of credit or home equity loan.
