Your just re-spining your posts to make yourself look like you know.
I doubt, i'll rephrase that: There is no way a driver can degrade a HDDs performance to the point where its running at almost half its speed, wether its 'near it or at it'. It doesnt work like that.
And basing your 'findings' on a synthetic benchmark thats results can be skewed very easyily, is daft. Use a proper benchmark. Like the time it takes to copy a file of yours across from somewhere.
Learn how a driver works and its interaction with specific hardware protocols, then make a decision, but until then, dont take rash asumptions on HW/Drivers just because your having problems.

And since I removed the Nvidia Drivers it performed at the rated speed.
lol. Theres no such thing as a 'rated speed'. Nothing performs the same in every system, all a raptors rated at is SATA150/10k rpm. Nothing more. Which isnt an indication of performance. At all. I could hook it up to my system and get a sustained speed of 70Mb/s Where as a mates could get 65Mb/s.
Specs are not an indication of performance. Case example: Processors.

The absence of the non-perfromance coupled with the removal of the drivers seems to imply the drivers were at fault. Would u like to defend ABIT for releasing a Bios that Changed the uGuru and the Bios DDRV setting from anything to 2.6v? Is that a sign of there genius at work? Or in your simple world 2.6v to the DDRV just fine.
I havnt mentioned voltages at all. But dont get cheaky.
All manufacturers make mistakes, but its no reason to condem them for it.
2.6v to some memory is fine. But for the most part, or for most memory, its not.

Go practice law of identity. ?Performance was near? never ever means ?changes.? I honestly have no idea how you read it that way.
Thats rich.

Now for the FDC controller issue: Some of us don?t spend our life or 4505 posts of it on this board. And I think it is reasonable for the MB manufacturer to include a description of the product attributes in the manual.
The last 10 posts have been my first for over a year and a half. As for 'spending my life'
I'd find it hard to actually spend my life on a forum considering ive spent the last 2 years working as a techy & the last year on/off in a hospital. So unless you actually KNOW my situation, dont comment.

I grabbed 4 MB books just now 3 of them 2 MSI and the ABit NF8 Manual describe the FDC as the Floppy Disk Controller. Yet the AN8-Ultra fails too. I disabled the FDC on all of those and assume I learned the language then. Not spending my time memorizing arcane MB Bios terminology is something I take pride in. I hope you memorizing this very important acronym makes you feel better than me. I prefer to think that adding those three words ?floppy disk controller? to the book would have made sense.
I dont memorise anything. Its common sence. Anyone with more than a few weeks/months of experiance in hardware, quickly learn to put 2&2 together with acronyms, seeing as theres so many of them around.
Insulting a member with no knowledge of that members job/hobbys/ect; is daft. Dont asume that im some bloke who sits in front of a computer on these forums all day. I actually spend all day fixing PCs, and rarely come on these forums anymore. For various reasons.

Maybe Abit could have added more to their manuals for, no offence, amateurs like you, but the simple fact of the matter is, that most of Abit's products are targetted at the enthusiasts market, which the AN8 series, both the QOTES & Fata1ity line are part of, who know more than the average joe user. And thats what it comes down to.

Now, you'll probably take offence to the term 'amateur' and your free to do so. But dont take it personally. You come across as the same as alot of other users i come across, both in real life, and on the net. You know some. You know the basics, and a little of the 'more than basic', but you are quick to asumptions based upon incomplete knowledge on how a computers hardware/software interact. Again, dont take it personally. These forums are here for people to learn as well. Even me.

Now you may not like the fact that their manuals, which i'll admit are a little sparse, are nothing more than a overinflated quickstart guide, but if the market they aim at is one that normally doesnt look at the manual, you'll see why they do it.
Now go and buy another tier1 manufacturers board, and you'll probably see everything in their manual explained very well. But thats becuase they cater for a different market.

-------------
Anyway, lets not argue this all day, lets see if we can sort out your problems:

Re-install the correct drivers, as theres 3 varients of the nForce drivers, you'll be needing these drivers:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_nf4_winxp32_amd_6.66.html
When installing, DONT install the FW manager/access manager.
Once installed, goto device manager, and make sure read/write caching is on, as well as the appropriate DMA mode. Then run the drive test program thats also there.
Report back and we'll see what we can do.
We'll see if we can get one problem at a time sorted.

##EDIT##
Just thought, by any chance are you running a RC version of windows? Alot of the problems that you are having are very similar to the ones a mate of mine has had recently, changing to a proper copy of XP Pro fixed the vast majority of his problems.
Just a thought though, if your running a retail copy, just ignore this.

Hi all. Just recently got an AN8 Ultra and I'm struggling to get sound (5.1) out the soundcard (apparently 7.1). I used the CD supplied Realtek drivers and managed to get sound out of the rear, sub and bass but no luck with the front. Any suggestions/ideas? Thank you very much.

Use the latest Nforce drivers from Nvidia's site and make sure to set speaker output to 5.1 in Windows.

Whats the sound like from the onboard sound anyway?
Ive been considering for a while dropping my Audigy, but ive been reluctant because of the quality of the onboard chip.

I think the onboard Audiomax is muddy and weak compared to my 4 year old Phillips Acoustic Edge soundcard. The card is coming into this pc soon. May actually get around to playing some games someday...

Two week old AN8 Ultra with Athlon64 4000+ and 1 gig of Mushkin Redline PC3500 Super Pi 32 million stable at 2760mgz here. 4x htt and 230 fsb, 1.55 vcore and 3.35 DDR voltage. This is with XP90C.

Board seems very good and simple to oc. Hardest part was determining proper memory timings for the Mushkin Redline. 2-2-2-8 as per suggestions on bandwith max for the NForce 4 chipset. OC obtained by tightening the memory timings and then pushing the fsb slowly day by day. Not using Nvidia IDE driver or firewall.

No 1T issues here. Set Command Rate to 'auto' in bios 13 and it is selecting 1T on its own. This is a good ocer's board without the sports car raciness of the DFI lineup. Very pleased.

Well it seems ive had to prematurely drop my Audigy.
Due to the fact that it appears, thus far, to be the cause of recent stability problems.
All being said, apart from the lack of normal bass/treble sliders in the drivers, the onboard AudioMax isnt as bad as i thought it would be. Its definatelly a 'clearer' sound, but on the same note, sounds 'cold' compared to my Audigy.

You will see mixed opinions on all motherboards, just look around. I am very pleased with the AN8 Ultra. It works well with Mushkin Redline ram and is a fast board, easy to set up. This was my second build and I'd do it all again if given the chance.

Most forum threads are for people seeking help or having trouble, keep that in mind. Good luck with your choice.

Thinking of getting this board to put more volts to my BH-5, is the max 3.55? I refuse to get another DFI turd and I know Abit is good (at least I always had great luck), but it is going to have to be pretty impressive to beat my Epox. How well does the DIMM voltage track, any issues like they had with several of their other boards that offered high vdimm?

some one on another forum said that the an8 series only works with 2T cmd after 220 fsb is that true?!?!?!?!?

Bios 13 offers 3.55 volts for ram but the board undervolts (-.1 to -.15 volts) the ram (and overvolts the cpu). Recent bios 15-17 limit vdimm to 3.4, still enough for my Mushkin Redline PC3500 to run 230 fsb at 1T command rate. I don't manually select 1T but when set to auto the board is running 1T. I still use bios 13 that came with the board. 2T issue has been reported with AMD 64 3000+ venice core chips. I have the 4000+ so no issues here. Have no experience with TCCD or TCC5 Samsung memory.

Newer bios also drop cpu temp about 10 degrees centigrade or so.

I use a 24 pin power supply. Old one stayed in the old computer which was given to my brother so the upgrade was needed.

So is the temperatures that it reports on the latest bios correct?
SpeedFan 4.26 reports my CPU as never going above 33*c. On Air.

Who knows if the temperature is correct or not. It is lower with the later bios versions. I'm at 38C now on bios 13, case temp is 28C. Me thinks that bios are not that acurrate, but may be "close enough".

Okay so you the Nvidia supplied sound driers over the Realtek Drivers on ABit's site?

I am still getting lockup in BF2 from software I'm sure. running all of the latest drivers, 81.85 Nvidia 66.6 Nforce, AMD X2 1.2.2, and Windows Registry Hack, the only way I get stability in BF2 so far is to change affinty to 1 processor. Can anyone tell me if they've had similar problems.

thanks,

SGPSupraman

You shouldnt be using the nVidia drivers at all. It should be the Realtek ones your using.

So I should remove the Nvidia Audio driver only and reinstall the realtek driver?

Just want to clarify

thanks for the help!

As mentioned earlier, Newegg's currently selling the vanilla AN8 for a very nice price and throwing in a Guru panel to sweeten the deal and I'd like to know what you all think about the AN8 vs the AN8 ultra. Abit's forums seem to be stagnant with AN8 ultra complaints, whereas complaints about the AN8 seem to be conspicuously absent. This thread seems to have its fair share of complaints about the AN8 Ultra as well...is it really that problematic? If it is, would the AN8 vanilla be any better?

From what I can tell, the AN8 is the same board as the Fatal1ty AN8 without the pretty blinky blinkies or SATA 3.0Gb/s hard drive support so the price is definitely right for what you get. I've been considering getting an Abit motherboard for my Socket 939 upgrade, but I'm really not sure whether to take advantage of the AN8's current deal or spring for an Ultra - or simply not buy either one.
