Finally got my RMA'ed board back and decided to get the Crucial Ballistix AA804's (2X1Gig). What I learned so far is that no matter how good the memory this board just does not want to breach the 1950 barrier on the FSB. I have tried with three different P5N-E SLI boards. three different sets of memory (Geil, Corsair, Crucial), two different CPU (E6400 and E6400ES), and tons of cooling with so many different voltage combinations that nothing seems to break the barrier.

Currently at 3850 (1925 by 482 1:1) which of course means 3850/964. My voltages are high so I need to back down on them. Unfortunately that also means that I will loose my 3850 and probably wind up around 3800. But it also means that I may get more out of the memory.

Think I'll try 1900 by 1045 @ a 10:11 ratio. Wonder if I can get this memory up to 1066???

Will keep you posted.

Hey, Its good to see a familiar face. Welcome back. I was wondering what happened. I thought you might have RMA your board. Where did you do if from retailer or Asus?.

Of the three boards I had/have, I RMA'ed two. First was a bad board so I went for the refund as they were out of stock. Second was the board with the bad SATA socket so it also went back to the retailer and they sent me the third board. So far all is ok and I am happy as dung beetle at the zoo!

Of course I also had to RMA my Athlon EPOX board to the retailer for a new one as the one that I had would not OC over 300 on the FSB. They tested and confirmed that something was screwy with that board so they sent me a new one.

I'll tell ya though, the shipping charges back and forth are a nightmare. I probably spent an extra $60.00 in postage and insurance to cover the RMAs.

BTW, got the Ballistix at 1045 at 4-4-4-12 2T. Too bad the P5N FSB can not keep up with the memory though. Down to 15.625 sec on the 1M SuperPi. Not too shaby so far. Needs more tweaking though.

I have the exact same RAM, bought from the exact same place. I bought 2 kits so have 4GB RAM. Runs perfectly at 2.085v for me. The sticker on the side says 2.1v

Thats a 800 FSB processor with a default multiplier of 15?. So that would be 15 x 200 = 3000MHz. If you up the FSB to 230 you would get 230 x 15 = 3450. Sounds easy right? Play with different FSB in the 200 to maybe 270 range with the 15 multiplier. You won't have the same FSB option as I do. You may be able to change the default multiplier. Look in the Advanced tab in the bios under the CPU configuration. Let me know how you make out.

Hi

i got a P5B vanilla and im thinking of buy a 2nd conroe system, should i get another P5B vanilla or get this board

ive read the first 14 pages of this thread then i saw its 150 pages long and i cant read all of that, those pages are like 1st of jan with first bios and people having problems running 1T and something about gary going to get a beta bios

but all that was 2 months ago and i skipped the remaing 130 pages and can some one please be kind enough to tell me the update on this board, does this board run ok with memory now or is there still problems, i have a geil 2GB 800mhz 44412 2.1v ram (dont know if its 1 or 2T) does the new bioses offer better overclocks

should i get this or P5B vailla

thanks

I read somewhere that the best FSB to Memory ratio was FSB x 1.2 = Memory Speed to set. Example A 450 FSB 450 X 1.2 = 540 So yo would set it 1800/1080. I read that it allows you higher OC on the ram and runs smoother. Let me know if you try it and what you think.

I have this memory. It runs fine now after some initial problems - the board won't boot with 4 x 1GB sticks. You have to first boot with 2 sticks and then set timings and voltage. Some settings work with 4GB, some don't. I must have removed and re-fitted the sticks about 10 times - really painful. Now I have a configuration that works, I'm not touching it. I run 2T.

This board as I understand it is the same with any brand of memory with 4 x 1GB though, this is not the fault of these modules. With just 2 sticks of this memory no problems at all. It is nice RAM.

I would have gone for the P5B in preference to this board. But I needed a board that had a shipping BIOS that supported quad core. That at the end of the day was why I bought this board ! I didn't have a C2D to boot it, flash, and then fit a quad core. Since I run stock FSB, and just raise the multiplier up to 11 or 12 when and if I need more speed, I'm happy. The price was superb too

I understand all of that, maybe I just keep looking in the wrong spot. I got it to post at 3.82, but it froze when trying to play a game.

You can't go wrong with this board. It's upgradeable just like the P5B just no as many bells and whistles. I've seen these boards for as low as $119.00 so do some shopping around and stay away from the Egg or ZZF unless they can give you a better price through free shipping or something like that. Don't get me wrong, I buy most of my items from the Egg and the rest from ZZF with maybe 2 or 3% coming from elsewhere.

If you do get this board and plan to OC (which it is built for) plan on additional cooling other than stock on the CPU, and expecially on the NB. It needs active cooling. depending on the level of OCing you may need a better HS on the NB + the fan (active cooling). South bridge also gets a little too warm for my likes so I have active cooling on that also. You do not need active cooling, just a regular old THIN HS will do. I say THIN because if you want to go SLI then there is a height problem with the south bridge and a thicker HS with the 2nd VGA card.

Great board, great buy.

Welcome RickyG512
I have this board and a P5B Deluxe and I have to tell you I have had a great time with this board. This board will run 1T if your memory supports it, you could get lucky though. If it doesn't like your memory you'll be pulling your hair out. I haven't heard to much about the Geil memory so I can't comment on it. I'm sure someone will. The ram in my sig can do 1T without a hitch. Check out page 92 of this thread for more info and suggestions. If you need help in choosing ram lets us know.

What are your voltages? Vcore is the main factor when OC this board. You can try leaving the NB voltage on auto and kept upping the vcore till your stable.

What sort of SB/NB cooling would be adequate in this situation? Would getting that Cooler Master Blue Ice HS/Fan setup and putting the HS on the SB and adding the fan to the NB be adequate as mentioned on page 92? Or should we invest in more cooling? Also, is mounting a HS on the SB and adding a fan to the NB straightforward with all the parts included with the Cooler Master Blue Ice? Or would we need an additional device/adhesive to attach?

Thanks.

Check out page 92 for options on cooling. I feel a small fan on the NB and a low profile heatsink is more then adequate for this board. Be aware that if your intentions are to run in SLI mode that you choose the right SB heatsink and that your VC will clear it.

I've read through the guide, thanks for that btw...I plan on ordering this based on that list and adding the fan to the NB and the heatsink to the SB, however, I just want to ensure that will be enough, or if spending more would be worthwhile if 3ghz on an E6600 (333x9 I believe) is what we are shooting for.

Also, how does mounting work? Does that HSF come with what I'll need to mount the heatsink (with AS5) on the SB and the fan onto the NB heatsink? Or do I need to invest in some sort of mounting device? Thanks.

It should work fine. I have those small chipset fans on the NB and the Zalman heatsink on the SB and I have overclocked to 3885MHz so you should have no problems.

Mounting instruction SB

No tools are needed or paste to attach the copper heatsink to your motherboard, just use the thermal adhesive tape. Which they supply

To fasten the fan to the NB use 4 zip ties and fasten one to each hole on the fan. Leave slack so you can take each zip tie and wedge it between the fins on the NB to hold the fan there.

Well I'm glad to see this thread still around and kicking. I made it back from my honeymoon and am still in the process of moving but last night we took a break and watched an episode of 24 and I turned up my speakers some and I was getting ALOT of static. It was happening regardless if I was playing the episode or just sitting at the desktop with nothing running. I didn't remember this happening before I left so I played with the connections some but it didn't make a difference. The static did stop once I pulled the plug out of the back of the board though. Anyone else having static issues with this board when you turn up the volume?

Check the audio mixer. Uncheck the PC speaker and other options you don't use. Adjust the volume setting in there while playing the movie. See if that helps

Upon reboot a screen would popup saying it was waiting for Windows hardware wizards to finish, then when it was ready to run it would ask to uninstall the current ethernet drivers - blah. So I updated the ethernet drivers manually (instead of using nVidia's setup). I rebooted and ran the setup and it went fine.

The VAM wasn't install, so I went to the ethernet driver folder to install it, it said it wouldn't work with this version of the drivers!!! So I went to the old install, those installed and seem to be working, except the web interface is slow and cause a reboot when changing one of the settings. So nVidia needs to work on it's ethernet install and straighten things out.

Overall, everything seems to be running more smoothly than b/4 with no additional errors. I didn't do any benchmarking before or after - so I don't have anything to say there.

Did you remove the other drivers before installing new ones? I had no problem at all installing the new drivers and they work great. Didn't have to install anything manually. I ignored the windows hardware wizard when it popped up. Sorry it gave you a hard time.

My OS was borked somehow. I did a "repair" install with the latest drivers slipstreamed in and all is well.

Temps: 42c for core and 34c for motherboard. This temps are from the Asus Probe.

I up the Vcore voltage to 1.575 but Orthos still errors after 30 minutes. However, I am able to play BF2142 for several hours without any issues. I tried overclocking the settings for my memory clock speed to 750Mhz but it would not boot. I set the timing to 5-5-5-15 2T and the voltage to Auto. No boot. I changed the voltage to 2v then to 2.2v, same issue. I am afraid to up the voltage on the memory & Vcore any higher.

P.S. Memory is unlinked.

download the beta speedfan or coretemp and check your temps that way.

that voltage is really high, you should see what your actual core temps are under load. you may be frying your processor.

2142 is much less cpu intensive than an orthos load. gaming relies a lot on the graphics card instead. my temps playing 2142 just go over 50c in speedfan beta. but under orthos load small fft's i almost hit 60c.

your memory is probably at its limits, not to mention your chip. unless pny 667mhz ram has some crazy chips in it.

Hello, I have some questions about overclocking. This is my first time doing this, sorry for the n00b question.

I set the following in the BIOS:

1400/800
Vcore 1.3875
NB 1.39

Running at 2.5ghz

Temperatures in Core Temp:
Core 0 = 45 C
Core 1 = 44 C

SpeedFan Says:
Temp1 = 35 C
Temp2 = 33 C
Core 0 = 45 C
Core 1 = 44 C

Does this seem alright or is it to high of temps?

I thought 1.425Vcore is already alot for a Core 2 Duo. IMHO, it's not worth to get those last 100 Mhz because it will shorten the life of your CPU significantly.

Set the Vcore at 1.32 NB auto. Temps are good for that much voltage, I don't think you need that much Vcore or NB voltage at that FSB speed. It will bring temps down. 1.28 Vcore will probably work too.

temps seem fine for idle. good chance you can get that chip to the same speed at lower volts maybe.

also, download and install a proggie like orthos and run small fft's on priority 9 and monitor your temps closely. you are lookingorthos run like this is giving you approximately an 85-90% load. which is great to make sure your pc is functioning well when stressed, and your temps.

intel TAT has a way to test a true 100% load one each core or both, but it only works on intel chipsets. orthos small fft's should be enough for all of us though.

The Asus website doesn't indicate the chipset for the firewire. Does anyone who has the board know if it is a VIA or Texas Instruments chipset?

John
EDIT: Never mind. I just read the AnandTech review. Unfortunately it is VIA. Thanks.
