I tried upping the nb voltage to 1.7 with a desk fan blowing at it and then lowering the cpu multiplier to 7x (E6400) . The ram is unlinked at ddr800. Did all the things pointed out on page 92 including "Set the VCore Offset Voltage to {Auto] Set to +100mV".

I also tried jumping from 1600mhz to 1650, 1700, 1710, 1717, 1725, and 1750mhz FSB in BIOS but not stable under 1.5v or 1.7v NB with CPU multiplier at 7x

Any more suggestions? Or that is just the limit of my board? x[

1700/800 with a 8 multiplier should be easy with that chip. Set the Vcore to 1.35, NB voltage to Auto. What are your ram timings and voltage? What bios are you using?? Everybody should have their System and settings in their sig to make answering questions easier.

Just an update. I reset the bios to defaults and went though the overclocking guide (Great work Core2Duo!).
VCore - Auto
Mem - 1.92
NB - 1.39
VCore offset - Auto

FSB 1200
MEM 667

5-5-5-12 2T

Everything ran just fine. Orthos for ten minutes with Asus Probe showing CP at 45C. Everything checked out in CPUZ

I tried out the FSB at all the below settings and the computer won't boot. I didn't change anything else, just the FSB.

1245, 1250, 1275, 1300 I noticed that when I did this, the Actual MEM MHz changed even though the MEM setting was manually set at 667 for everything. The FSB-Memory Clock is set to unlinked, and the Memory ratio is grayed out, set to auto.

Why does the actual memory change, and why can't I boot past 1200FSB, when I can boot just fine at 1333FSB? [edit] even dropping it from 1333 to 1330 doesn't let the computer boot and the actual mem changes from 666.7 to 665.0 even though the mem is manually set to 667.

Try unlinked FSB/Mem speed to 1400/800 1500/800. NB and Vcore voltage on auto. You can also try upping you ram voltage one notch to 2.01

1400/800 Posts, but I get a BSOD when windows starts to load.

[edit]

I tried 1300/650 to see it it would post underclocking my ram at 1:1, but the BIOS freeze up, and I can't get into them. Won't boot past that.

Did you up your ram voltage. What are the spec's on your ram ( voltage and timings ). You can try 1400/667 too

Yes, I did, to 2.01 and timings are 5-5-5-12 2T.

I'm going to try 1400/667 now

Set your timings for 800MHz on your ram to 5-6-6-12 2T ( 2 clocks command per clock) tRC to 22 rest auto

1400/667 posted, gave BSOD when windows loads.

1400/800 posted, gave BSOD when windows loads. 5-6-6-2 2T and 22 same voltages as before.

What color slots are you in? If that last post doesn't do it switch slots and try again

Posted, but BSOD as windows loads.

My goal was 3.0Ghz, content with 2.8Ghz. If i can hit 2.8 and be stable I'd be happy. 1400 seems to be pushing it, and I'm not sure if my ram, which is cheaper budget ram, is capable of 800Mhz.

Using yellow now, will switch them over in a minute.

It's not the ram. Its just finding the right voltage combination or the right slots Try once more Set the Vcore to 1.45 NB 1.56 Ram 2.01 5-5-5-15 2T tRC 22

BSOD right when windows loads. I'm going to try the different slots right now.

You can try 1500/800 with a 8 multiplier with any of the Voltages settings we tried before. I would try Auto first for both the Vcore and NB voltage your ram should be fine at 2.01 5-5-5-15 2T tRC 22. You can get to 3.0 is just trial and error. Keep a record of what you try and what works.

Tried, that, won't post at those settings. It doesn't seem to like 800.

I was stable at 3.0Ghz with 1333FSB and memory at 667. Orthos would run for ten minutes before I got a BSOD. I just wasn't sure where to put my voltages, since I'm still at stock cooling. (although I've read of people hitting 3Ghz with stock). If 1333 could be stable, would be be possible to tighten my timings and keep the memory there? Or am I holding back performance that way over a 1:1 ratio?

Woot! I got into windows with 1500/667 with 8X multiplier. Running Orthos for 3mins CPU currently at 45C with side off the case. Asus Probe showed a temp warning for the MB (219C??) but then it went away just as fast as it showed up. Now its at 39C.

CPUZ shows 3.0Ghz, but Orthos shows 3375MHz?

[edit]

Orthos ran for 11mins 30 seconds, then stopped with an error. "Rounding was at 5.0, expected less than 0.4 Hardware failure detected."

[Good News Update]

I went back to the 1333Mhz FSB with the same voltage settings and timings as before. Orthos ran for 20 mins before a BSOD so I loosened the timings a little more. So far so good.

Core Speed: 3.0Ghz
Bus Speed: 333.3MHz
FSB: 1333MHz
VCore: 1.4
Memory is at 1:1 at 5-6-6-15-2T Trc = 22

CPU Temp Load @ 45mins with Orthos: 51C

I'm going to add a passive heatsink to the south bridge tomorrow. I have the stock NB heatsink on the motherboard, it has no fan. Can I add one? I didn't see any mounting spots for one. I'd rather not rip it off and replace it.

Also, one last thing I want to ask. When my CPU isn't at load, the multiplier drops and my clock speed goes down. I know this is because of something that I enabled in the BIOS after going the the OC guide, I just wanted to see if it was ok to leave it enabled? If I'm not stressing the processor, I don't need the extra power when it's at load anyway.

thanks for the reply, my ram is the Buffalo Firestix 1gbx2 DDR2-1000, timings from CPUz shows 5-5-5-31-29-2T at 2.17V. Bios Version 0201.

I'll try your suggestion. I'll create a sig with my specs and settings. Thanks again

I'm happy to report that my computer is stable at 2.8Ghz.

350Mhz FSB 1:1 Ratio to Memory at 350Mhz

Voltages were the same as you suggested before. I just couldn't get it to run stable at 3.0Ghz but 2.8Ghz is just fine for now. Memory is slightly overclocked and temps are safe at load (CPU never goes higher than 51C in Asus Probe).

Thanks again for all your help!

whats a high to average NB temp on this board - i got my set up running along nice at 2.7ghz / 900mhz ram (4-4-4-4-28 T2 / yes i said 4-4-4-4) - going to spend the weekend finding stable comfortable top end but need to know about the NB for now so i know what to watch out for

**oh and ECC does work on this board**

Sorry to break in but I have a problem... I just received this board, along with everything I need for a new system. My specs are:

ASUS P5N-E SLI
Intel E-6300 C2D
RAIDMAX SMILODON Case 500W Power Supply
Western Digital Caviar250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
ASUS DRW-1608P3S DVD drive
MSI NX7900GT-GeForce 7900GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card
Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory

I have no video output from the machine. I have no video output through 2 known good monitors, DVI and VGA.

I swapped the Vid card with a known good card and still didnt get anything from this setup. The 7900 works perfectly in my other system.

Any ideas? Or should I just RMA the mobo?

Is the SLI selector on the board seated correctly? So it's set for a single card, not SLI, and is in all the way and secure? This didn't happen to me, but a friend of mine had this problem and switching the selector around fixed his issue. Also are you putting the card in the top PCIe slot?
