My RAM isn't on the QVL list, although I can't be sure as I don't know what actual memory chips are on it. Apparently Geil have used 2 or 3 different ones for this memory

You stand a good chance of it working - just set the memory speed back to 533 and 2T before you fit the 2 extra modules, so you stand a good chance of it booting up initially. Then increase it. I've never tried 1T with 4 sticks, I just assume it won't work.....

As long as sbinh got it from the web site link, it should be fine.... but you never know. With a new BIOS it always pays to wait a few days for any reported problems - although I didn't !
I flashed from 0307 to 0505 so didn't get the problem he mentions. I had never updated to 0401.

It is nice to know that they got that issue fixed. I know the earlier versions had the lock. Do you know if it changed the memory strap any?

sbinh,
It's only a downgraded ROM file if you try to upgrade from 0401. From 0202 or 0307 it's an upgrade. Use awdflash.exe instead of EzFash to flash that bios. Try it, you can always upgraded back to 0401 lol Stay cool you know how this stuff works.

I got it looking stable at stock speeds, and tried a simple overclock. 300 x 8 for 2.4MHz (set to 1200 in the BIOS). I got to windows, started orthos, and the system hung just before the 2 minute mark. I forced a reboot, tried to get into the CMOS, and it crashed while loading. Shut off the PSU, tried again--this time, where I would normally get a system beep, I get a prolonged beep until I shut the PSU down again.

Reset the BIOS with battery and jumper...same thing. And again. And again. Tried each RAM chip separately, and in different slots. Nothing.

Absolutely NOTHING else changed...WTF is going on, and how do I get back to the bios???

Reset the BIOS with battery and jumper for ten min or longer. Make sure the plug is pulled. Put one stick of ram in the yellow or black slot furthest from the CPU. Run Memtest86 ver 1.7 and check your ram for errors.

I just received a custom-config'd system I bought from an online white-box PC builder. I immediately installed and ran 3DMark06 a few times, but that's the only stability testing i've done thus far. I then loaded up CPU-Z for some stats... and I don't quite know how to make sense of my memory timings. Under the Memory tab, i'm showing:

CAS# Latency: 5 clocks
RAS# to CAS#: 5 clocks
RAS# Precharge: 5 clocks
Cycle Time (TRAS): 31 clocks
Bank Cycle Time (TRC): 22 clocks

if I recall, my SPD tab shows: 266mhz - 4-4-4-12 2T // 400mhz - 5-5-5-15 2T

My P5N-E is set to ALL Auto settings out of the box and I haven't changed anything. Not sure how to report various voltage readings to you at the moment... but in general, how concerned should I be that my tRAS says 31?

I've shyed away from trying memtest mainly because the instructions on how to use it looked a little bit out of my newb comfort zone... : / system seems to be running stable (3DMark06 runs well so far), but would appreciate any insight I can get here...

It's fine the way it is. You can set it to manufactures spec's if you want 5-5-5-15 2T the rest Auto

Thanks for the update. I believe your right and they did drop it from the site for repairs. We'll have to wait for a few more to report to confirm that. Who's going to try it and report back?? sbinh? Just don't get mad. OK

Thanks Core2.

I was working on this with someone on another forum as well, tried some things and came to a conclusion.

I tried the BIOS reset you suggested, but still couldn't get a post. I played with the RAM and discovered that I could get it to post in slots 1 or 2, but not 3 or 4. No amount of resetting the BIOS, or combination of auto or manual RAM settings in the bios, would get RAM to take in slots 3 or 4. My conclusion: channel two got killed on the mobo.

So I've RMA'd the motherboard, and I'm returning my two 1GB sticks of OCZ PC2 6400 platinum rev. 2 (which is not supported on this board) for a pair of 1GB Corsair PC2 6400 sticks (which are supported, but expensive!!). Everything arrives tommorow.

If it is a downgraded ROM file, they need to specify so.

Newer version supposed to contain everything in ealier version + new change(s) .... and users need to UPGRADE (not downgrade) to newer version.

Dude, this pissed me off last night ... If new bios can be upgraded by using awdflash, why wouldn't be done with EZFlash? That's bother me ... .. don't you think?

No, it is not acceptable. ASUS have generally been one of my preferred motherboard brands, but the last couple I've got have had issues

This board - very picky on RAM, presumably a BIOS issue ? Or is it the nvidia chipset itself ? Otherwise no complaints though

My other machine is an ASUS K8N-DL with two dual core Opterons in it. I had to RMA the first board, because a simple memory settings change rendered the board totally unbootable, confirmed by the supplier. When I got the second board I left them all at stock.... But again this board/BIOS does not like the particular Corsair RAM that I have, confirmed by a couple of other users. But if you leave the settings at stock, it's fine. However I am now running a good overclock on that board

Of course many motherboard manufacturers have had memory compatibility issues, and ASUS is not alone on this. So on reflection they're still one of the best choices you can make in terms of manufacturers.

All work good. Super Talents are the best bang for the buck. Crucial's are Micron memory so you can't go wrong with those. The Patriot's have been right up there with the Super Talents and the Crucial's. The Corsair are good too and they are rated to run 5-5-5-15 1T at 1.9v

The ones in my sig work great too if money is not a problem

As of today I have a Noctua NC-U6 on both my North & South bridges

KG

UPDATE
*******
Taken in isolation, I now realise that this post looks a little weird - I should have quoted the original post which asked for info on cooling used on bridges.

Whilst I'm here - I've left my set-up as bog-standard for the first few weeks of its life, waiting for things to settle down.

My core 0 and core 1 temps (40/41) still look a little "high" when compared to the CPU (32) and Mobo (31) temps (I've seen postings with higher Mobo/CPU temps but much lower core values).

Does this mean my cpu cooler needs re-pasting / re-seating?

Thankz
KG

Those temps are fantastic, though I assume they're idling temps. Try running orthos for a few hours and see how high they get?

Your temps are fine, though the mobo temp is higher than average here. Perhaps if you removed some of the slot covers on the back of your case it would go down.

But what do you mean "cpu at 34"? Core temp?

Anyway, there's a new version of the Core Temp software that correctly reports the E4300 core temps. Get it here: http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/CoreTemp.zip

SpeedFan should subsequently be updated soon enough too since the author uses the Core Temp code. Until then add 15C to the core temps, or fix the configuration to do it for you.

Core 1 43C
Mobo 32C

Data 1 Drive 29C
Data 2 Drive 29C

I'm using a pair of 1gb OCZ Platinum XTC pc6400 on the p5n-e. Running at 2.1V they manage 440MHz 4-4-4-12. Using the 7X multi on my CPU gives me 3080MHz.
When i change multipliers to maximize my e6400 speed, the best i can get is 3300MHz (472x7) @ 1.45V.

Of the few bios available for this board, which do you think is best?

0505 got pulled off their site again, so I'd leave that alone for now. I can't claim to have had luck with any so far, so I can't help you otherwise.

That really pisses me off, since I just flashed my machine with it yesterday after it became officially available. Oh well

However if a subsequent BIOS update fixes the problem where 4 x 1GB sticks won't run at 800, then they are forgiven
