Since I had problems with incorrect speeds being shown in various places as I post above in my last post. The problem seems to be something with running the 8x multiplier. Maybe 1:1 is not so good. Are there any other ratios that work well that I could aim for with a 9x multiplier.

Thanks.

beatnut2,

When in BIOS, set your FSB frequency, and then try to enter memory frequency and verify if the system has accepted it, e.g. my FSB 1300, memory 800. Verify thereading below. When I entered 1300 and 866, the reading below said 846. Obviously no good.

But 1300 and 867 gave me reading of 866.7, for a 4:3 divider. Try to get a simple fraction as a divider, mine is presently 16:13.

325MHz x 16 / 13 = 400MHz mem bus x 2 DDR = 800 MHz memory speed.

The main thing is to see that the real memory speed is the same as the one entered.

Try it...

wanted to post my results ( took me a while and thanks to those who helped esp JustaGeek)

I am running 4X1GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer 800

Used default timings 4-4-4-12 and 2T and Default voltage

Set to Unlinked
CPU 1066
Ram 867

P5N32-E SLI Plus BIOS 0602

EDIT:
WHOOOPS... i posted wrong board... DOAH!

Wow.. this link was immensely helpful to me. I've always known about the 3gb limit in 32bit OS' but never really know "Why". This explained it. Not only that, but I had no idea the video ram on my graphics card was part of that calculation and may explain why a friend of mine with 2gb of ram + 2 8800gtx's SLI'd is getting odd frame rates and sometimes BETTER rates with just one card. I wonder if the extra .5mb is going to waste and the OS is using the slower of the two ram types.

Either way, thank you SO much for that link. I'm re-reading it now to ensure the knowledge is retained!

That's the reason why the graphics cards manufacturers are trying to avoid the 1GB Video cards! Well, besides the 7950 GX2...

Perfect !
As I recall, inputting 867 in the BIOS actually gives you exactly 867 as well
My GEIL won't run 4-4-4-12 at 2.08v at that speed though, I need 5-5-5-15

Thanks for the tips JustaGeek. Did a bit more reading on the whole 1:1 ratio thing finding out the only real gain is in benchmarks, no real world gain. So since having troubles with the 8x multiplier I've gone back to 9x. Still archived 3.2GHz as I wanted.

The only thing not showing up right is the Vcore, I set it in the BIOS to 1.35v. All is good though.

Memory is running at 4-4-4-12 2t @ 800MHz

Will continue stress testing.

What do you guys think of those max temps? ok?

Anyone got any fans on the stock NB? looking for something simple to cool this thing down.

I've using the ZALMAN FB123 fan. Works well. Here is a photo of inside my case....

Exactly how I have mine as well !!

80mm Papst fan at 2,000 rpm, puts a nice quiet breeze down onto the Northbridge and the base of the Freezer 7

WEIRD ... I thought some of my ram settings were different ... no idea how/when I changed to this ...

but here's my current setup ..

Voltages
Vcore - 1.34375
Mem - 2.178
NB - 1.563

MEM Timing
tCL 5
tRCD 4
tRP 4
tRAS 12
CMD 2 Clocks

tRRD 3
tRC 4
tWR 4
tWTR 12

tREF auto
tRD 5
tRFC 52
async latency auto

--- not sure how/when/why I set tRC tWR and tWTR ... but I'm stable so I'm not gonna go undo it ...

mhz
Unlinked
FSB mhz 1066
Mem mhz 890

Be sure to look up max for your vcore on Intel site, mine is 1.35x, so I went a little lower.

I'm not OCing ... so my stock cooling (with the exception of the zalman 9700 I slapped on the CPU) is keeping all temps pretty low ...

our board isnt supported with the new bios update for 1333 fsb cpu's

This has always been confusing for me - the 650i chipset is 1333 capable, but ASUS do not if I recall correctly promise 1333 support in their specifications for the board itself.

It's a moot point though, the board clearly does 1333 no problem. I would guess a 1333 fsb CPU would boot up just fine, just without the processor identification string, i.e. it would show as unknown CPU. Who is going to be the first to test this theory....

I am sure that 1333 support will be added soon. The board was advertised as "supporting the 1333 as soon as they become available" since the beginning.

We just have to be patient - but that's nothing new for us with P5N-E SLI...

I have mine on 4-4-4-12, which is what my ram is spec'd at. Never tried tightening it up. Would the performance be noticeable?

Not sure, it's just that I have some 3-3-3-12 Crucial Ballistix ram here that I could use instead of my Geil. Not sure I can be bothered to try, but also I thought I read somewhere that this board wouldn't run tight timings like that. Could be wrong, or else later BIOS updates have fixed that. People also say that on the Intel platform the timings aren't that important compared to the memory speed itself

Ram is so confusing. I tried running 4-4-4-12 with 1T and it won't boot to Windows. I also tried 5-5-5-15 1T and it also won't get to windows. Oddly, when left on auto, this board places the timings at 9-9-9-18 at 2T. However, knowing the ram's specs, I quickly manually changed the timings to the 4-4-4-12 at 2T and it booted flawlessly.

With all this talk of 333 FSB CPUs, and having just fitted a fan above the northbridge, I just had a play with an overclock...

Set FSB at 333, memory linked and synchd at 667 (same 4-4-4-12 2T timings)
Multiplier down from 10 to 9, so 333 x 9 = 3.0GHz
CPU volts moved from auto to 1.38175 (just to partially counter the huge vdroop, stock is 1.35v)
NB voltage left at auto

Memory passed memtest as I'd have expected, and I've just completed over 9 hours with 4 instances of Prime95 with no errors. So there it is, 3GHz of stable quad-core goodness, and temps stayed OK as well. I'm now running my normal apps under full load, and am seeing max 68C which is good for a quad core and within limits.

Just wondering.... Is the new BIOS 0608 any better than the old 0307 in terms of OC and stability? Is it worth it to update?

Thanks!
