i had no problems getting started with my ram. in fact i was oc'ing easier with this board with my ram & cpu than the p5ne-sli. before i ordered the board i saw severael posts of excellent results with the ocz platinum rev. 2 and the p5b-deluxe.

but after 2 days i shut down to install something into my pc and it wouldnt boot. i had the good ol fans spinnin lights on but no posting syndrome.

this is a problem that i have seen is independent of ram brand - the xtremesystems.org thread is chock full of them. i can get my pc to turn on but it is a PITA. i have it on now, i ordered a gigabyte dq6 yesterday from newegg, it shipped this morning at 10am and it is on the truck for delivery as we speak (i live 30 minutes from their jersey warehouse)

so i am done with asus completely.

Sorry to hear that 804 was a decent bios 903 has been fine for me I never had much problems other than the JMicron Controller which was solved by replacing it with a Windows driver. Good Luck with the DQ6

yeah i just had bad luck.

asus sells the most boards it seems so you will most likely hear about the most problems as well with them. but for now i am going to try gigabyte since i went 0 for 2 with asus.

i built about 6 rigs 3 years ago for myself and friends/family on asus & gigabyte & abit mobos. only 1 had any issue immediately and it was an easy resolution.

this time around my luck switched.

i just want to get settled and test this chip out

Take a look at this list

DDR2 Ram List

Sorry, I'm a bit new to overclocking so I'm not quite sure what the chipsets mean. So if it's green is that good? What about if it's black? The site says the one in the RAM I got is Epida... Thanks for the help.
I'm just a bit worried about putting 1000 Mhz RAM in an 800 Mhz board especially since I've been seeing some people having trouble with memory timings on this board. I'm hoping I won't have any problems though.

the nice thing about the board is that you can run in unlinked mode. (lock it to 800mhz) any ddr800 on the supported list should be a non-issue. this allows you to overclock the cpu without worrying what divider to use to keep mem at 800mhz.

Well anyhow I've changed the order to the Crucial Ballistix based on the recommendation. I guess if you want the best you have to pay for the best.

i have to find my link. i had one that showed performance differences based on mem frequency and timings. frequency made the biggest difference (timings very minimal) obviously but on the intel systems it seems to be negligible. will edit when i find a decent one.

mem vs cpu tomshardware.com

if anyone has a link to a newer one with core2 and ddr2 please link it. that has some good info but i know the AMD chips are more responsive to memory frequency and decreased latencies.

I sent back the Patriot Extreme memory I got with my first P5N-e (it seems to be good memory too, grr) and coughed up an $85 restocking as well as giving up the $40 mail-in rebate on the Patriot in favor of Crucial Ballistix.

Now that I'm running with 4 gigs of the Ballistix in there, though, I made the right choice. It's the good stuff.

true, 64bit software and driver support seem scarce to say the least.

Ah, I was wondering about this Patriot memory. It works fine for me so far but I'm hoping the bios upgrade will let me run 1T. I checked the ddr2 ram list and there were many possibilities for the sticks I bought. I'm hoping I got some Micron D9's but someone in an xtremesystems forum thread said that theirs ended up being Elpida AG-6E-E. I don't know if those are any good. His description sounded much like mine and it was purchased in a similar time frame but I don't know from where. I don't really want to pull that heatspreader off though so I've just got my fingers crossed.

btw, how's vista working out for your hardware? I'm curious because I'm considering buying the new OS a few months down the road and I was wondering about any inconsistencies or driver issues with this nvidia hardware. I know I'm gonna be waiting on X-Fi support but anything else? Have you tried any gaming in Vista Business?

I've heard good reports about the Patriot Extreme memory. I hope I didn't persuade you to do that. The memory in question here is the Corsair C4's. At least you know you have Micron under the hood.

Performance isn't as good as it is under XP but most games will work (on the x86 version - not sure about x64, though theoretically if the drivers are there it shouldn't make a difference).

I think the big complaint right now is that the drivers are beta-ish, though that will probably be addressed come the 30th.

My ram is supposedly SLI and Crossfire certified and EPP ready if that means anything. cpu-z also shows SPD timings of 4-4-4-12 at 800Mhz and 5-5-5-15 at 1000Mhz. Im hoping they're good chips. The computer is insanely fast anyway, that 1T is really just icing on the cake. Still, it would really make my year
