Hahahaha

Wonder what happened between 0202 and 0401?

Core2 you said you got your system up to 3.7?
Is it stable with Orthos or Prime for more than an hour? 4 hours?
Thanks man just interested to see how powerful that little chip is. My friend's got one and I want to see how far we can push his.

Actually 3.880 and I have plenty vcore and NB volts left

3850 481x8
CPU Temps

3880 485x8

3.7 is solid after that it is all fun

JonDom,
How you doing. Haven't heard from you in a while. Did you flash to 0401. The way you have been running no need to. I bought some Corsair PC8500C5 and now I too can run 1T smoothly. Keep in touch

Man that is crazy!
I'm still on 0202.
I'll OC some more after a few more months when I feel things are just not snappy enough anymore. hahaha.

It's hard to keep up with this thread AND I check in about once a day. Everyday I have 2-5 pages of posts to read through. Will chime in whereever I can help out, but you boys got this board down and are hitting some awesome numbers.

I wonder what can people do with an e4300? Will have to wait till prices for that chip fall to $130s. I guess.

dlxmax has his e4300 up to 3.6ghz already from what i have read.

Thank you for the welcome. After Orthos ran for over an hour last night I decided to step to 1500/800. It booted and loaded Windows fine, but Orthos stopped almost immediately. The cpu didn't even get up past 43 C, so it doesn't seem like it is heat, but I don't really have enough experience to say. I forgot to mention before that I have fans on the NB and a heatsink on the SB (thanks for that tip). I'm concerned about going any higher with the voltage, as it is already at 1.35 VCore, and the 1.577 or whatever on the NB. The truth is that I will probably back off and run it at 1333/800 when all is said and done. 3.0GHz is fast enough for me, I think. I'm just curious as to what it is capable of.

What voltage and temp is too much? Does it seem likely that I've hit my wall at 1400/800?

try mem unlinked @ 800mhz, fsb 1696 vcore to auto or 1.45 and NB to 1.39. let me know.

Yes, mem is unlinked and at 800 with timings 5-5-5-12 (2T). Which is the mem default.

The last time I tried 1600 FSB it seemed like it was working, windows ran great, orthos had no trouble. Everything was good. Until I turned it off to insert an additional fan that blows on the NB. It wouldn't reboot. It wouldn't even post. Nothing for about half an hour, then it finally booted and greeted me with a big error message. I was able to access the BIOS and reduce the FSB. I'm a little wary of trying to go over 1600FSB now.

I should also add that at 1600FSB it would lock up during windows boot, somewhere in the middle. That was resolved by increasing the NB voltage to 1.56. So I'm pretty confident that 1.39v probably won't even post 1696FSB.

Ah ok, I'll keep that in mind. I'll probably just upgrade the BIOS though, as it seems to solve some of the timing issues as well at higher FSB. Does the 0401 still have the same memory straps as the 0202? Also, my memory is spec'd to run at 2.3V. Ya its really high, which is good I guess, since I can run it at 2.3V and not worry about frying my sticks.

How do you get clockgen to work on this board? I can't even get it to load properly. I get the main window with the clocks and options tab but when I click on the Clocks tab, I don't have the ability to adjust the FSB.

You have to get the Beta release that supports the 650i chipset. It should be on their web site

give it a shot. you may be surprised.

mine is currently running with vcore, vdimm, vNB auto. fsb 1696, 800mhz mem unlinked. with spec timings. seems to be very stable speed and settings.

You have to read more of our posts There are memory holes or FSB areas that are not reachable you have to step over them try 425x8 or 1700/800 unlinked

Cooling the NB is the most important factor in overclocking this board You heated up and froze and after it cooled down it ran. Get as much air as you can going in and out of your case and it should help. Read through our posts for tips and hints

very true.

another good thing about 424(1696) x8 is you can maybe get by at stock volts and not generate so much heat. at least thats working for mine right now.

Could not find it on the website but I was able to download it from Xtremesystems. I just Googled 'clockgen+beta' and that did the trick. Man, and all this time I have been going into BIOS manually, Doh!

Cooling isn't a problem with mine. I have a huge amount of air flow. It's not liquid cooling, but it's the best you'll get with air. Alright, I'll try 1696. But if it doesn't post and I can't get back into the BIOS. I'm coming to the board calling for heads!

Just coming back in for an update on my build with the P5N-E. Just made my punch list and it looks like I'll be waiting until tomorrow, pay day, to get a few things done. This build's gone overbudget, but I haven't had this much fun since Abit made the best overclocking boards (BX6r2 FTW!). Oh, how times have changed...

Someone mentioned that it's their first Asus build. It's the first Asus build for me too. I work for a large retail tech company so I get good deals on Intel mobo/chips. Their stability is second to none but, unfortunately, the've historically had zero overclocking potential... Before that, I was an Abit fan. My BX6r2 (Celery 366@550), BP6 (2x Celery 366@550), and BE6-II (PIII 450, stock) are still chugging along as test boxes. Since the heyday of the P6 core I haven't seen a CPU that was so much freaking fun to toy with. I just hope that Asus can get their act together and give us some more BIOS support. This board's been insanely popular, so hopefully the support will be forthcoming. 0401 is a good step forward but we hunger for more.

On my RAM issues...

I've got an RMA in with Newegg that I'm going to ship out tomorrow. I'm done trying to play with the TwinX 6400 C4 with the nappy Promos chips. They've waived my restocking fee after I complained of MemTest failures, saving me $41 (woot). So that saga's finished. I won't even talk results of the 3 days of testing I did, it was sad to say the least. Avoid all of the Promos chips listed in the threads that Core2 linked to - it'll do you good.

So that brings me to the choice of new memory. I'm trying to stay as low as possible on costs, because getting more pricey means eating more ramen noodles and less real food. I'm a fan of Corsair after their support's helped me with several builds, but the cheapening of their modules with nappy chips makes me a tad miffed having been burnt by it.

Right now I'm looking at a few contenders, since I've got some time before I have to choose:

2x 1GB Super Talent DDR800 C4 Kit [$268.99 w/ $20 MIR]
T800UX2GC4
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820609026
- Okay, it lists it as "4-4-3-8". Whisky tango foxtrot?
- The heat spreaders are so ugly that only a mother could love them. I'd want to replace em, fo sho.
- Support? Does it exist?

2x 1GB G.Skill DDR667 C3 Kit [$294.99]
F2-5400CL3D-2GBGA
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231090
- Sure it's rated at 667, but it's supposedly got the Micro D9 under the hood. Should, theoretically, get some good speeds, justifying the cost.
- "3-4-3-8". Very impressive latency! Should indicate even more headroom on the clock-speed front...
- G.Skill? Never had experience with these cats, seen very few reviews (but i'm out of the loop)

2x 2GB G.Skill DDR800 C4 Kit [294.99]
F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820231065
- Okay, 800MHz at 4-4-4-12. Supposedly equipped with the D9 hotness. But can it take me to 950-1050?
- Can do 800 MHz C4 at 2.1v! Feed it 2.4v or more and where can it go?

After all of this research, I'm left wondering if it's even worth the extra cash. With lower-end 2GB kits running under $200, should I spend my limited cash on performance RAM. If it's not going to limit my CPU overclock, is the extra memory bandwidth useful?

NB/SB Heatsink:

I think I've settled on the Thermalright HR-05 for the NB. It puts out a ton of heat and I don't want to risk any stability by having it run too hot. I'll probably pick it up after the RAM, since I've got a 2.5" fan on the NB factory heatsink.

For the SB I still haven't made up my mind. I haven't seen anything that jumps out at me as being practical for SLI use and has enough output to go air-cooled in my P180 case.

i have an hr-05 that ill sell u. i bought it in with p5n-e sli and i used it fanless for about a week. worked like a charm in my p180b. my new mobo has enough chipset cooling that my hr-05 is sitting in a drawer.

Couple of questions here
1) My temps seem to be a little high, http://usera.imagecave.com/bear254/2.6IDLE.JPG . Is this with in the recommended temp range or am I to hot? I have a 120mm fan bringing in air from the front, an 80mm fan blowing in from the side and a 120mm pushing air out the back. I also have this HSF on the NB http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16835116018 and a HS on the SB.
2) Looking at the screen shot above, I have the following set in the BIOS Vcore@1.33125, but on Speed Fan and Probe II it shows at 1.30 or 1.31. Do these programs show what the CPU is using or what the BIOS is set for?

Thanks

For the price why don't you just get some 2 GBs of Geil DDR2 1000. It's guaranteed so you won't have to worry about overclocking your DDR2 800 or 664. They don't use Microns, but at least they work and they are much cheaper than the other DDR2 1000 sticks on the market.

i use cpu-z, i also have my voltage set to auto in my bios for vcore. adjusts it automatically based on workload. idles @ 1.21v and increases to 1.41v under full load. keeps it cooler at idle and seems to be able to control it stably up to 3.6ghz

I like your NB heatsink. How is working out? Does it get real hot to the touch? Make sure that the push pins on the Freezer7 are in all the way. Try to rotate it a little while pushing down wards. Then check for any slack in the pins and that it isn't hung up on anything.
CPU temps are not bad MB temps are rather high. What is your ambient air temp? How many days has the HFS been on? The MX-1 that is pre-applied takes about 3- 4 weeks to cure. I hope you didn't take it off and put something else on.

for anybody around 3.2ghz what are your temps with core temp compared to asus probe IDLE & LOAD

im getting like a 10 degree difference. this was the same with my p5b & p5n-esli and i mean difference between the two programs - your mobo temp probe and core temp.

speedfan gives me the same results as my mobo temp proggie such as asus probe.
