i don't know that there is a specific fault.

all my components are running well above spec. FSB from 1066 to 2000, mem from 800mhz to 1000mhz.

not to say you couldn't get a bad board.
mine certainly wasn't handpicked. bought it from the egg.

mem on mine runs in both slots at advertised specs, and up to 1000mhz with relaxed timings. cpu OC'd from 2.13ghz all the way up to 3.6ghz stable.

granted my case never gets above ambient temps, and i have a fan on my NB. results will vary, but i tend to think a certain amount of issues are from changing too many variables at once. not all but most.

Yeah, I'd say theres a fault with the yellow ram slots, but if you only have 2 sticks of RAM, it wont affect you and you'll have a great bang-for-your-buck overclocking board.

i've had mine to 70C without issue. actual on die sensor. wouldn't recommend running at that temp constantly though. low to mid 60's seems to be acceptable. obviously idle and normal use will end up being lower.

Do you think that would have cleared up my "CPU has changed" and the memory timing errors?
Most likely. Always Clear The Cmos when you upgrade it
Okay, I've cleared the CMOS twice, and I'm still getting the posting problem.

I haven't put my memory into the yellow slots, but I can conclude this much:

1. I can put only 1 memory stick into either black slot. If I put both sticks in the black slots, then I get the "Only two lines" Post problem -- or "nothing" at the Asus logo screen -- I described in my first post. Both memory sticks appear to work in either black slot. Again, however, I can only do one at a time.

2. I am still getting the "CPU has changed" error, even with the 401 BIOS and a clear of the CMOS.

3. I can no longer get into Windows. The Windows XP Boot screen appears for a while, then the system spontaneously reboots.

4. I changed my memory timings to 4-4-4-12 2T. The post screen showed 5-5-5-18 1T. Something's not right here.

I think my motherboard is hosed, but I'm going to keep on experimenting. If anybody has any ideas, let me know.

Try putting your mem timings to 5-5-5-15-2T, if you haven't already (I didn't look that far back). I had to do that to get stable, even without OCing the memory.

No dice. Same behavior when Windows comes up - it just wants to reboot for no reason whatsoever.

ok. lets keep things simple. (for my sake)

1 stick works fine. lets go with that. use 1 stick. go in and set all mem timings to manufacturer default. make sure to set to 2T regardless. set memory to unlinked at 800mhz. set fsb to 1066. set vdimm to auto or specify according to manu spec. set all other voltages to auto. how does that work?

if that works fine, put the other stick in the slot right next to the first (still single channel) change no settings

if that works fine put the second stick in the same color slot as the first one and lets hope for the best. if still no good do a dos memtest on each individual stick to rule out a bad stick of mem. if that is good run memtest in dual channel mode in dos. if both individual sticks pass and dual channel does not pass then you have a foobar'd board IMHO.

and having your full system specs is helpful

I wanted to give you guys a quick update on my efforts for more memory performance. I decided to attempt to increase my memory frequency since I cannot improve timings. Initial testing appears to be positive, and I have it at 1500/1000, 5-5-5-15-2T. Going to run ORTHOS through the night to determine if it's actually stable, but it is running better so far than when I just tried to better my timings.

My hope is that any performance lost in timings can be gained in operating frequency. I'll keep you all updated on its status.

Can't find too much info based on what you provided. The A-Data website lists it as CAS 5, so I'm assuming it's 5-5-5-15-2T @1.8V. My recommendation is to leave the voltage at auto and see what you can get stably at around those timings.

I know this topic is old, but, it seem's to be the only viable source of overclocking information for my motherboard. If you guys would be so kind, I'm really having trouble understanding how to overclock maybe you can give me a little help before I damage anything. My specs are as followed

Aspire Iceberg Aluminum 680w PSU
ASUS P5N-E SLI(BIOS 0202)
E6400 @ Stock (2.13) Liquid Cooled by Cooler MasterCPU is normally around 40c idle
2x1gig - Apacer PC2 6400 800mhz
evga gforce 8800gtx
Running windows XP home

From what I read, I believe my ram timings are 4-4-4-12 @720mhz 2.3v[needed], or 5-5-5-15 @900mhz 2.3v[needed]

There's 120mm fan on the side of my PC thats on 100% of the ram and the remaining on the NB.

I'm wondering what are the numbers I will need to get a sucessful overclock and have my RAM/CPU synced for max performance. Any help truely is appreciated.

Hi folks,

I've read through this whole toic (took me a long time) and i have to say you guys sure know what your talking about.

I'm in the middle of speccing up C2D system, i realise that you guys are very busy but i would really appreciate it if you could help me out by looking at my proposed setup to see if its all ok?

I can only get corsair memory from my local retailer, and i have a huge amount of external storage hence the small HDD. the whole thing will go in to a lian Li V1000 case so cooling is not going to be an issue and i will not be overclocking, i'm just looking for a stable system.

MOTHERBOARD - Asus P5N-E SLI NF650 Sli
PROCESSOR - Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 775, 2.13 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, Allendale Core, 2MB Cache
MEMORY - 2Gb (2X1Gb) CorsairTwinX XMS2 DDR2 PC2 6400 (800), CAS 4-4-4-12 EPP
GRAPHICS CARD - 512MB XFX 7950GT XT PCI-E (x16) Mem 1460MHz GPU 570Mhz 24 Pipes
DVD WRITER - Samsung SH-S182M/BEBN Black Lightscribe 18x18 ±R/RAM DLayer DVDRW Writer
POWER SUPPLY - 580W HiperPower Type-R Modular Black PSU Quiet Dbl Fan aPFC ATX2.2 20/24 Pin (RoHS)
HARD DRIVE - 80 Gb Samsung HD080HJ SpinPoint P80, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 8MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ

Thank you.

I would try Unlinking my memory to FSB first to see what my maximum FSB is and then slowly bring my ram up to sync with it.

Example Unlinked FSB 1800,1900/800 than try 1800/850,900, 1900/800,850,900,950

thats a good setup, and if you wanted to OC the cpu you should be able to on the stock cooler. probably up to x6800 speeds without issue

No good. IF your going with Corsair get the PC8500C5 or CD5
If you can't afford them. I would try the PC6400C5 first.
Everything else is fine

I'm pretty certain I have a foobar'd board. I can have both sticks in single channel (one black slot, one yellow slot), but can't post with Dual Channel (2 black slots). I guess I'm gonna try to RMA my board, get another one, (hopefully) learn from my mistakes, and do it right the second time.

Thanks for the help - even though I wasn't successful, I can say that I'm learning a lot as I go along!

Thanks for the reply guys, i knew that the memory i ad chosen would not be suitable for overclocking, i didnt know that it would cause a problem with normal operation thought.

I've had another search around, and as core2 as suggested i take it this memory would be ok then :

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=402850

its a lot more expensive but if it makes a difference in sytem stability then i guess i'm going to have to get this. Am i correct?

Thanks once again! you guys are brilliant, soon as i get my stuff i will report back and let you know (most likely asking for more help!)

Yes, thats it. You should get some mileage out of those. How much is that in USD. Here I paid 350.00 USD

Did you try inspecting and re-seating the CPU. You could have damaged the NB when cleaning it

woah you paid 350USD for this memory? i just converted using the most current exchange rate which is $2 to £1 and it work out to be 498.18USD

That is absolutley unbelievable ... we are seriously being ripped off here in the UK!
