No mather what i do the comp wont start up with 1T..

Im running at 4-4-4-12 T2 now no problems there.

Did you try enabling the SLI Memory Option in the bios and set it to 0% OC to Max% OC. It should set everthing and if your lucky 1T should show in CpuZ

if i dont set it to expert og disable it wont let me overclock.. got it now to expert.. cpu-z still showing 2T

Don't worry about overclocking. Let it set your timing and voltage and write down the setting so you can duplicate it later Leave vcore, vdimm, NB voltage on auto and set the SLI Memory Option to 0% OC and FSB to default ( No overclock )
My ram is set at 800MHz 4-4-4-12 1T

But 3.5 is about the max for this 6600 I think. It's taking 1.49 vcore to get it stable. With the droop it settles at around 1.41. I had to ramp the vcore pretty quick to reach 3.5 so I'll probably drop it to around 3.4 to 3.45 and lower the vcore for everyday speed. I'll try to get around to posting a OC screenie.

What are your guys' everyday vcore settings?

Next up, ballistix overclocking!

my vcore is currently on auto. it's good for running mine stable up to 3.6ghz

adder are you saying that this board will auto determine how much vcore to use to keep your cpu stable? Cause that would be nice.

Yes, It works for me too. At default speed my vcore at idle is 1.15 load with Orthos its 1.20 amazing and CPU and Core temps are 3c - 5c lower. It will work till 1800/900 and then I have to play with the voltages a little and this is for the NB too.

John,

One suggestion....

Separate your TIP post into new thread and stick it .... It would come handy for others.

roger that. i can get it stable to 3.7 by doing it manually but it's nice to know that at auto it will set it lower at idle and keep the temps down.

I'm still totally unstable with 0401 and only stable at 0202 if I underclock.

I have:
re-seated the RAM
tried yellow slots, black slots, and one stick
double-checked all power connections
flashed to 0401, cleared CMOS, removed and replaced battery
changed memory to 2T at default settings
set memory to rated speed and voltages
run FSB and memory linked/unlinked at a myriad of speeds
kicked my computer

Nothing seems to work. Any other ideas? At the end of the day, if I'm only stable with one stick of RAM in one particular slot, that will be progress, but ASUS is going to get this motherboard back. As far as I can tell, I either: 1) have a faulty mobo, 2) have faulty RAM, 3) have components with some strange compatibility issue, or 4) have components that don't like 0401 (although that doesn't explain the necessity of underclocking for stability with 0202).

Is this a BIOS issue that can be corrected? Has anyone had similar problems and been able to identify the source?

Wow, asus has really implemented some great features into the bios of this board. Now if only they could automatically adjust for the vdroop we'd be set! Also I could really care less about idle temps, this machine will be folding 24/7 anyway.

I'll try it out tonight to see how it goes. Do I need any of the cpu thingys enabled for this? I currently have everything disabled except for virtualization and no execute bit.

unfortunately it doesn't sound too good. i would try loosening up the timings temporarily to 5-5-5-21 2T @ 800mhz and also finding what the values are supposed to be for the other timings and setting them

if that doesn't work i'm stumped. if cpu is not overclocked, NB and CPU should be fine and not heating up. so no worries there. the problem unfortunately will be in trying to figure out if it is a ram, MB or just an incompatibility issue.

What do you do when your memory out-preforms the Front Side Bus?

Currently running at a 9:10 with Front Side Bus at 450 (450X4=1800) memory at 500 (1000) 5-5-5-15 2T? 1800:2000 = 9:10

Man this crucial ballistix far outweighs the previous GEIL by means and bounds. But the GEIL got me to as far as I could go due to the FSB not working at more than 1950.

I can't seem to coax anything else out of my FSB or is it NBCC?

mine maxes out at 1000mhz, and I'm pretty happy about that. I know John has some really good stuff now.

Clearly the Crucial Ballistix AA804 (PC2 6400) are too much memory for this board. I guess I should have thought about it a little more. Well, there is always my AMD system or the option to sell.

Going back to my GEIL which I bought for my AMD system and still waiting on Corsair for an RMA on my XMS2's.

Too much memory you say?! HA, the ability to run them at a higher speed with tighter timings is what makes them great! Pretty sure not using the 1:1 ratio or synced or whatever isn't gonna hurt your performance much. Could someone do a quick test at 1:1 and then at your max ram speed with the same timings to see which is faster in super pi or something? Sorry if I came off harsh, but I think the ballistix are a good value for the people that want quality ram gauranteed to have micron under the hood.

1:1 synched is faster than using divider at the same freq. doesn't take much of an increase to compensate for it though. no reason not to run unlinked. good reason to use this board.

Are there any settings in the BIOS that should be disabled to improve performance or to just help stability? Also, before doing some moderate overclocking, should I re-apply some thermal paste to the NB? I've read on here and elsewhere that the current coating may not be enough to handle heat issues.

I would not have made such a bold statement unless I had run several test using SuperPI. With the GEIL I am stuck at 820 4-4-4-12-2T but I can clock to 1950 on the CPU and I get about 15.754 sec for 1M. With the Crucial Ballistix I can go to 1000 at 4-4-4-12 2T and again 1950 on the FSB for 3900 with a SuperPi of 15.749. Unfortunately I can not run 1:1 at this ratio so I am stuck at 2T. When I do lower the mem so that I can run in 1T say 950 with a FSB of 1926 the loss of dropping to 950 instead of 1000 has no effect on SuperPi but THERE IS NOT ANY GAIN EITHER GOINT TO 1T because it is limited by the FSB and not the memory. Hence, the memory speed is more than the FSB speed which makes the memory less effective with this board than the GEIL has been. Even if I did gain an additional 1 second on SuperPi, it does not warrant the extra $70 for the memory.

I was hoping that the GEIL memory was limiting the FSB and the Ballistix would give me more FSB leverage but that is not the case in my setup.

Does anyone have a higher FSB than 1950 for 3900 with an E6400 and P5N-E SLI on Air?

If you do, please chime in and let me know how you broke the 1950 barrier that I have found with three different sets of memory (Geil GX22GB6400UDC 4-4-4-12 at 2.1v to 2.3v, Corsair TwinX CM2X1024-6400 XMS2 5-5-5-12 at 1.9v, or the Crucial Ballistix AA804.16FB3 4-4-4-12 1T at 2.2v) that I have used with the same Motherboard and CPU.

The Crucial Ballistix are great and I did go after them for the Micron chips and I am glad that I did but they in no way gave me a boost of more that .05 sec in math calculations and that is what computing is all about, the ON/OFF position of the switch.

I disable everything I don't use USB Legacy, Controllers - IDE, JMicron, SATA ports, raid The things I have enabled is Lan, Audio, Enhanced C1 (C1E) and CPU Internal Thermal Control. I would not touch the NB unless you are having heating issues. Mine is fine with a fan on it

You could try 7x500 mem at 1000 that would give you 3500 and a 2000 FSB. So far I seen people do 7x525 on air with this board. I would say that the Super Pi and the Bandwidth are going to be greater too by how much I don't know.

I'am trying to put together a Tips and OC Guide on page 92 at the top. Its that I had bad experience today and lost a lot of work that I was doing. Writing and organizing things are really not my thing. It looks like my office with notes that I have scattered all over the place. So as soon as I can get it together ( if anyone wants to help ) I'll let you know
The way this thread is building were going to need a Table of Contents and a Glossary

Update: Ryan ( adder1971 ) is going to bail me out and do this thing right. So I'll be in touch.

OK how do I get to 7X500 for 3500? Setting the Multiplier to 7 and the memory to 1000 with the FSB at 1750 (FSB X 2 = Indicated Speed) ie 7 X 500 will only give me at 3.1 not the 3.5 when the FSB is = to 1750. Is there a ratio that I am missing some place? Its tough to go to Intel OC instead of the AMD that I have been doing since Pentium2 days.

7 multi, 2000 (400quad fsb) mem synched 1:1 = 1000mhz. NB will likely need to be 1.5, mem voltage auto or manu spec, core voltage likely auto but may need to manually increase to about 1.5 for stability.

good luck
