yeah its a software problem. at 3.5ghz some proggies see mine as 4ghz. i wish

Temperature question:

I just got my 2nd P5N-E (after RMAing the first) with an E6600.

Running at stock speeds, 4 gigs of Crucial Ballistix (set to 5-5-5-12 or else it wouldn't post).

In coretemp, cores idle around 34-38C.

Running Prime95, they jump up to around 60C.

This is with an Arctic Cooler 7. That seems awfully high for under load. What gives?

that does seem very high for stock speeds. i get around 60C load running at 3.4ghz. (and mine is nowhere near as cool running as John's) what thermal compound? (mx-1 seems to be the stuff to get) good case airflow?

Oh good hehe. I was getting a little scared for a second.

On a side note, I'm still using the old 0202 bios and I was wondering when Asus could possibly get around to officially releasing a new one. I'm curious to try the 0401 but with my luck as soon as I flash it along comes Asus with 0404 or whatever. Also, what is the aversion to a windows based flash utility. Is there a much higher chance of a bad flash? Otherwise, I'll have to go out and pick up a USB flash drive and I'm a bit short on funds right now. Of course, I'll do it if it's important for the life of my machine

Good case airflow, two nice case fans.

hmm...was I suposed to get thermal compound in addition to the arctic pro 7? it's got some, er, you know, gray stuff on the bottom just like the stock HS did, but if I was supposed to get something in addition to that, I suppose I should switch back to the stock HS and keep at stock speeds for now?

john has the same cooler as you. i'm not completely sure what comes pre-installed on those. would have to imagine anything would be better than the stock cooler though.

There is a good chance of a bad flash in Windows. I seen to many. You can use a Floppy if you have one installed. Flash drives are pretty cheap now and you don't need a huge one 128 - 256 mb is plenty good.

I updated to 0401 from 0202. I had to remove the battery and let the CMOS clear for a few mins or it wouldn't let me into the BIOS setup. Once I did that it was fine.

I don't notice any difference between 0202 and 0401. It still can't recognize my G.skill 800MHZ 6-6-6-18 2T 2GB RAM modules correctly. If I leave it at auto it comes up 6-6-6-31 2T. So I still manually set the mem timings with 0401.

Overall I don't notice any difference, maybe it's better with other things and other vendors RAM than 0202 was, but so far I don't see any difference.

Anyone know whats improved with 0401 vs 0202 or 0307?

And Asus HAS posted 0307 on the website, you just have to click on the BIOS tab on the left side of the download page once you get there. It's there.

The thermal paste on the bottom of the Freezer7 is MX-1 and works great takes about two - three weeks to fully reach its maximum performance. What are fan RPMS. Qfan is terrible at controlling the fan speed when things get hot. That fan should go up to 2500 rpms. Use speedfan instead. The E6600 runs a little hotter then the E6300 and E6400

Looks like one of the corner plasitc bits on the heat sink was never there and so it wasn't on right - it was firm (somehow) but uneven so it didn't have as good a grip.

Switched back to stock, will RMA for a new arctic cooler. Thanks!

Oh I see 0307 now, it wasn't there a couple days ago. I heard some people had problems with it though. Anyway, I guess I hadn't looked at flash drive prices for a while because they're much cheaper than I remember. I'm gonna go out and try to pick one up in the next couple days. I'm not big into overclocking I just really want to get the tightest possible timings out of my ram. I saw another fellow here with similar Patriot memory running at 1T which is what I am aspiring to.

That's definitely hot. I have my 6600 running ORTHOS right now @3.0GHz with about 1.46-1.47V after Vdroop (set to 1.5125 I think in the BIOS, stock is around 1.3V I believe) and it's only 40C an hour and a half into the burn in cycle.

I don't have the exact same setup, as I have a Zalman CNPS9700 and ZM-STG1 thermal grease and more than enough cool air flow, but that's still very high for stock speed.

I'm running my E6600 at stock with a zalman CNPS9500 and MX-1 and my temps(using coretemp beta 0.94) are usually around 33C idle and between 39C to 42C under full load with orthos and super pi running for an hour. It does peak at 43C briefly. This is after I've let the MX-1 settle for a week or two. Is that high? I'm not sure how much the temps would increase if I overclocked. My core voltage drops as low as 1.26v while under full load. Also, is 21.125s for a 1M super pi at stock speeds any good or just average or what? Thanks for any input.

Has anyone used the Tuniq Tower cooler with this board? I want to get the massive tower for my upcoming build, but I'm not sure if the Asus board can hold the weight.

I am having SERIOUS problems with this board. After putting my setup together and eventually flashing the bios in the EZ flash program to 0401, it locks up 9/10 times at the POST screen. I cannot hit DEL to enter setup, or F8 to see the boot menu because it is locked. When it doesn't lock, I cannot get WinXP64bit to even start windows and when WinXP32bit starts, it wont even recognize my Sata 1 setup as even being any hard drive at all. I loaded the RAID driver, but I don't know what else to do.

Can someone please help me out. I was becoming very frustrated with this setup since my previous ones have been AMD/Abit with not a single problem.

Thanks.

B2 meaning black slot which is furthest to the back (edge) of the board?

The POST memcheck when it sometimes loads will read the full 2gb, so I don't think that's the problem but I can try again.

Any idea why when it does make it through POST, that I cannot install xp64 let alone have windows recognize that there are 2 hard drives installed on Sata 3 & 4? The RAID controller I am using in the windows preload screen is the jmicro 363...
