Sorry to interupt, but I just had a quick queston for you guys.
Got my P5n-e SLI in the mail yesterday, along with all the rest of my goodies, and was up late last night putting everything together.
The only thing I'm not real sure about with the physical build is the Front Panel Audio Connections that came with my CoolerMaster CAC-T05.
I see the 10-pin connection on the lower left hand corner of the board, but I'm not sure which of the case's modules to use. They are (in order):
"HD Audio", "AC '97", or a cluster of eleven (11) seperate color-coded wires at the end (the green and blue wires are doubled). Moreover, the individual wires do have diagram labels attached to them as to what they are, I'm just not sure which one of three options is for me. I'm guessing it's one of the modules, but I thought I'd ask here first. Any help appreciated, and thanks in advance

That header is to link the audio to the Front Panel of your case. Most people use the AC 97 unless you want HD coming out the front.

Thanks Core2. Maybe I'll just try both AC' 97 and the HD and see what each sounds like. I suppose if I can get HD out the front, it would be a bonus--not sure if it will make headphones sound any better though. What really confused me was the eleven seperate wires at the end of CoolerMaster's supplied line. Probably not for my build.

just remember to make the selection in the bios for what type of audio you want for the front output.

to anyone wanted to OC i strongly recommend setting the vCore to auto, at least until you get used to how much vcore you need for a certain point. i am unable to really push my OC any higher by manual setting it. it seems to be pretty good at doing that. it helps to take one issue out of the equation and helps lower temps at idle.

Hi All

Like many of u i falled in love with this MB after reading some really nice reviews of it an desided that this should be the card i learned to oc with.. BUT.. not going so well as ia has hoped..

Let me start on what i have in my comp..

E6300 CPU
P5N-E SLI MB off cause
Corsair Twin2x PC6400CL4 2 gb Memory
OCZ GameXStream 600W
Inno 7900GT
Zalman 9500 CPU Cooler
Added a NorthQ 3880 Chipset cooler on the NB too

Now i have read alot before started this overclocking thing so im not totaly "green"

My problem is That no mather what i do i cant get over 1500 FSB QDR.. I have raised the MB volt to 1.5, vcore to 1.45, have tryed loosing the timings to 5-5-5-18 and even set max ram speed to 400 just to make sure the ram speed was not the problem..

But still orthos crash at 1550 and up..

My ram are in Black slots and bios is the new 0401. have turned of all extra things and added a passive profil on the SB. and disabled SLI memory since it kept setting my Timings a 1T even thogh set manual set it to 2T in bios..

Is there anything else i can try..
Thx alot in advance

Buffered/Registered: Unbuffered
Cas Latency: 4
ECC: No
Features: Platinum Mirrored XTC Heatspreader
Heat Spreader: Yes
Timing: 4-5-4-15
Voltage: 2.1V

Model #: OCZ2P800512
Item #: N82E16820227081

thanks again bro.

Hope you have more luck with your OCZ memory than I've had with mine. Last night it would pass memtest over and over 4-4-4-15-2T (1T would be the EPP setting) and 5-4-4-15-2T (the listed non-EPP setting on the web site) and would fail ORTHOS at varying times, depending on the RAM settings I chose. I'm running it again at my previous stable setting, 5-5-5-15-2T, and it appears to be doing better. This is all keeping the FSB, multi and voltages the same.

I'll probably keep ORTHOS running for at least another 6 or 7 hours to make sure it is completely stable, but this has been quite disappointing.

My guess with yours, as well as mine, is that something is overheating and/or ASUS still doesn't have the other timings quite right for certain memory, such as our Promos. Try setting your memory voltage to 1.9 or 2.0 (then go higher), NB no higher than 1.39, and keep an eye on your Vdroop when running ORTHOS. If it dips below a certain point, it will fail.

Also, make sure you do a good number of runs of memtest to make sure your memory isn't what's failing you.

Maybe Core2 has some other ideas.

Well.. if i try to set orthos to the Small FFTs test it dont crash in 1550 but when i run memtest with 1550 it gets errors.. so it is properly my memory.. but the 2.1v is whats what corsair says it will need.. but ill try 2.0 just to see..

So your all set now,Right? Just set you spec's and you should be good to go. If you decide to overclock things will change. Good Luck

I upped the NV to 1.56V and ran Orthos. Lasted about 3 minutes before encountering an error.
Temps on NB jumped 5c from 42 to 47C. Just holding up on any more attempts until I can get the new heatsink. I don't think the stock heatsink is taking care of the temps sufficiently to run Orthos with present overclock.
I am going to try some actual gaming now while dropping back to 1.39V on the NB.

Only that a lot of people have had big problems with the C4's. If you can exchange them and go with either the cheaper C5 (I have them and they worked great to 900MHz) or another brand. The SUPER TALENT 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) have really been good to a 1000 MHz

Core2,

I just bought the ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro but I mistakenly removed the MX-1 coating on it but I have replaced it with some Arctic thermal paste. My question is that in PC Probe displays my cpu running at 41C to 47C, is this normal? I have it blowing the hot air up into my 120mm fan for my power supply. No overclocking yet. What is the best way to keep the system cool while overclocking. Case setup is in the rig description below.

I've transfered the mobo to an antec SOHO file server case.

Upon first boot i get 1 continous beep error at post.

Second boot, went into windows.

Third boot, same continous beep.. reboot, back into windows....

1 long continous is memory? I havn't touch any settings as of yet.

i guess ya, didn't have the damn speaker plugged in previously.

Tried the 0401 BIOS, can't say I'm really enjoying it though. Although I can now POST at higher FSB speeds, the system just hangs and won't load into Windows. To make this more frustrating, the 0401 seems to break the Asus C.P.R function. I have to reset the CMOS manually, which is basically the #1 cause for me to stop trying for a higher OC.

So anyways, still at 375/500 and 3.0GHz, a bit lower than most E6400 but still plenty fast for me without having to stare at an Asus Logo and resetting my CMOS every 3-4 mins. May try again with a new BIOS but for now, done tweaking. Thanks for the help all.

What are your ram timings and voltages. They should be 4-5-4-15 2T 2.1v or auto

Don't know with AS5. Make sure all of the push pins are seated tightly. Try to rotate the freezer while pushing downward a little and check the push pins again. With MX-1 none of mine were over 38c at stock speed, idle the first day of use. What is your ambient air temp. Not a good idea to blow hot air into the power supply IMO. It fits over the NB if you trim a little piece of the fan housing off.

Check your ram timings every time you reset. The bios tries to force 1T on ram timings and make sure the SLI Memory Option is Disabled. Happens to me. The double hit of the reset works for me and I have 0401. I tried it after you mentioned it. Try hitting it more than twice. I thought that was a good solution

I would just like to say that resetting the bios via jumper on the board absolutely blows. Could they have put anything else closer to it so I can't get my fingers on that dumb jumper? First I take out video card #2, then I have to remove the SATA cables cause they're in 3&4 to fit the second video card. Then I remove the fan plug and the q connector so I have some room. Flip jumper, reset, reinstall everything. 15 mins later, I reboot and I can run 1T at 2.078 vdimm. <3 crucial. Overclocking starting all over again.

The SATA port positioning sucks too, if asus had used the entire board width instead of cutting 1/2" off, they'd have had plenty of room to put them somewhere where they don't get in the way of a dual slot video card in the 2nd slot. I would have gladly paid an extra 5 bucks or so to get a standard board with better SATA positioning.

yep, not exactly a good place for the bios reset. fortunately it shouldnt need to be used once you get the system stable and at a speed you like.

Core2,

Do you have a pictures of the inside of your case and what you had trimmed off the fan housing? When I put it on the normal way, it seemed like the bottom of the AF7 Pro heatsink was touching the top of the NB heatsink. Also, is there a way to get more of the MX-1 stuff?

Is there a newb's guide to speedfan somewhere? I'd really like it to remember settings and not have to autodetect all the sensors everytime I reboot.

Yeah, the bottom end of the board near the SATA/IDE connectors is way too overcrowded. Really poor placement if you actually have to use one or (god forbid) both IDE cables.

I just take out the battery - it's easier than getting to that #!%# jumper.

Not sure about speedfan, but annoyingly under Vista x64 none of the good monitoring programmes run - CoreTemp, CPU-Z and RMclock all won't run :-( I guess it is to be expected. Fortuately the latest version of ASUS Probe on the ASUS website does. Top marks to ASUS

the temperature monitors like asus probe are inferior to core temp - usually the difference is 5-9 degrees C which is quite a bit.

but check out intels thermal analysis tool. it gives you the proper reading and it is the most likely to be compatible with vista already.

If the bottom fin of the freezer hits the NB heatsink just bend it up a little ( I had to do that too ). You have trim the lower left hand corner of the fan housing off so it will fit with out hitting the NB

Yes, the difference can be up to 10C. I did briefly have XP installed (for a day or two) and two cores were 5C different and the other two 9C different.
