Okay guys, I need some help. Got my stuff put together over the weekend, everything seemed to go okay, system posted okay, everything recognized. I changed only one thing in the Bios "HDD Smart Monitoring to 'Enabled' ", and I got my first problem. While my Sony DVD drive was recognized in the Bios screen, it wouldn't work (no light/no response)--makes WindowsXP install tricky I swapped drives for an old CD rw I had laying around and ,boom, up and running.
Next problem I get is when I try to install Windows. I should mention this HD is being reused and had an exsisting version of XP on it. Anyways, after setting the Bios to boot from CD, Windows starts to do its thing. Windows inspects, accept liscense, press "D" to delete partition, confirm, NTFS format, waiiiiit, setup copies files, Windows goes to restart, "Boot from CD" prompt comes up (I don't press any keys because this is what I've been told to do), Windows startup screen comes up followed by an error message:

"Problem has been detected and windows needs to shut down tp prevent damage to your computer"..."Check for viruses, remove newly installed hard drives or HD controllers. Check HDD to make sure it's properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption and restart" I haven't really done any of these yet, because it's practically a brand new drive, and I'm pretty sure it's hooked up right.
I'm not really sure if this is an issue that's related to this mobo, but it's getting me frustrated. I've reinstalled Windows before this way with no problems on different systems, so I'm really not sure what the problem is. I am a bit of a Noobie, and this is the first real system I've put together myself so maybe I've got something wrong.
Sorry for the long post and any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

manually set all ram timings except keep at 2T regardless. set vdimm to manu spec? cd and hdd on different ide channels? i suggest making them both master drives on primary and secondary ide.

i believe John had that same mem. follow his suggestions for the timings for that.

Which CosairPC6400 C4 or C5
CosairPC6400 C4 4-4-4-12 2T 1.92 - 2.1
CosairPC6400 C5 5-5-5-12 2T 1.92 - 2.1
What band hard drives I usually format them with the utility program that the HD manufacture use. Windows takes to long

HDD is set to master on primary channel, CD is set to master on secondary. You believe the problem may be memory related?

i dont like to count out anything. data can be corrupted by mem on it's way to the HDD.

it could be an issue with the secondary IDE as well. maybe set the HDD as master on the primary IDE and have the CD as slave.

I have the C5's, will try you recommendations for manually setting timings. Have to see what utilites my HD has--yes Windows does take a long time, and unfortunately I've been through it several times now. Adder, I might fool around with the IDE assignments as well--try some different configurations. Running out of time to work on it tonight, I may have to post later.
Thanks for the quick replies

Well that worked. I now have the Vcore at 1.4000 (or something close to that, I have noticed on this board that what I have the Vcore set in the BIOS, windows shows it lower) and the NB at 1.56. Seems stable in windows, but I haven't ran any stress tests as of yet.

Not to bad at all. Good job! Everything else looks good. You have good cooling on the NB SB, right?

I've got this Antec 80mm suspended fan that you screw into a motherboard screw hole that bends over a desired area. Do you think this would be adequate cooling for the NB?

Just wanted to chime in on removing thermal grease. I've been using Arctic Clean (2 step solvents) which makes it incredibly easy to remove that gunk. I'd recommend it, as the small bottles have lasted numerous applications, and only cost about $8.

Also, I'm still working on my memory, I had it running ORTHOS for 14 hours, no incident, rebooted, had a winlogon error and then ORTHOS failed within an hour and a half. Very strange. Right now, I'm testing 5-6-5-18-2T @1000MHz to see what happens.

Good tip there acivick I added it to the Tips page 92 that we started. I still think when the memory controller gets really hot is when your going to see more errors. Have you tried running a loop session of 3Dmark 06 for an hour or two. I would think that would be more than enough stress that the normal person is going to put on his machine. Orthos is more like a burn in utility IMO.

If you can place it so its blowing directly on it, sure

I have not yet even begun to mess with the memory. I am still at stock on the memory at 4-4-4-12 2T. My NB is 1.53v, Mem 1.92v (even though it is rated at 2.1 to 2.3 v) and the CPU is currently at 1.45 + 100mv. I still have to see if I can lower the NB voltage one notch.

Cant wait to try them.

What happened to you It doesn't take that long to install ram. We need a Crucial report.

Hi acivick,

I believe that these unexpected failures could be attributed to Windows XP - it has not been designed to run Dual Core processors! Ther is a fix published on Microsoft web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256

Also, you can google Article ID: 896256 - there is a lot of forums referring to failures caused by this flaw of XP, and people replacing memory, Video Cards etc., while the problem was the operating system.

It helped me with the games - no throttling between the cores means more uniform load on the processor, which translates into smooth gaming.

Hope this helps.

Just enjoying the moment. Havn't even cracked the seals yet.

I'm still playing with my GEIL memory right now. Now running at 3-4-3-6 2T. Going to play with the memory now and start upping the count and keeping the FSB at 9:8 If I can get the memory up some then I might be able to reach the next strap and get to 1:1

Wishfull thinking on my part as I know that this memory doesn't clock very well. Have to try anyways. Was also able to drom my Vchip down to 1.3v...

I am also getting my AMD AM2 board back tomorrow after about 2 weeks without it. Problem is that I have everything for it except a case.

Sorry, was away for a bit working on some things. Back on the computer. Guys, I tried changing the primary and secondaries, I've switched the jumpers to both CS, manually entered all memory timings (I have the C5's) and manually entered the voltage (listed as Memory Voltage under Voltage Control?) Timings now manually set to 5-5-5-12 2T 1.920v. Ran WindowsXP setup twice now with the same BSOD--both time after it goes through the lengthy format process.
Truly lost, suggestions?

3. Re-seat your Ram. This board does not have good support underneath where the ram is placed use some hard rubber foam underneath when seating them or use your fingers to support the board and wiggle them in tight and snap the clips in

4. Switch ram slots if you suspect a ram issue and test your ram with Memset 1.7

5. Use a volt meter or a power supply tester if you think you have an issue.

6. Always do a full reset when you upgrade your bios

What slots are your ram in?
What are your voltages and timings?
Did you run MemTest 1.7 to check your ram?
I am sure there are other things to check. This is a good start

Thanks for the advice, but I'm still having trouble. I put 0401 on again to test stability, and I made sure to clear the CMOS and take out the battery. It appears marginally more stable, but it still crashes as soon as I try to run Prime95. Why is nobody else having trouble with this BIOS, I wonder? I'm running everything at default settings, except I'm setting the memory to 2T. RAM is in the black slots.

Just a shot in the dark, try setting the HDD Smart Monitoring to "DISABLE" and then run setup. If that was the only thing you changed, I would change it back and see what happens

With the memory timings, I have changed some things now. They're still factory spec, just manually set. I'll give the HDD Smart Monitoring a whirl tomorrow, but I just gotta believe it's something else. Really frustrating

Run Memtest86 1.7 on your ram. Try one stick at a time. Timings now manually set to 5-5-5-12 2T 1.920v is good. Try using only one IDE controller and disable the other ( switch controllers if that doesn't work and disable the other). Disable the JMicron controller. Disable USB Legacy. Make sure the raid is disabled.
What slots have you tried? Switch them.
