Yes. So some time next week I'll keep a close eye on the temperature. Then I'll think about pushing the ocing a bit more.

Using default FSB, it will run at 800 fine, but it will not let me change it up or down - example, even lowering it to 667 it would not allow. although if it could not find an appropriate divider to keep me on 800, it would some times set the memory down to 760. But if I try setting that manually it will not accept it.

Will play around with the memory a bit more tonight using default FSB, see what I can get out of it. Might have tried the above when still on 0202 bios instead of 0401.

Have tried many variations above and below 1600 (or 400) , the highest I have gotten it to take was 1520.

Although once it did post at (i think) 1596, but did not finish loading windows before it reset self and then never posted anywhere near that high again.

I am kind of tempted to go back to the 0202 bios and see how the board behaves on that...

Its an awfully fussy board this... not sure, but did I see an 0407 bios floating around somewhere?

I know dlxmax could run his memory over 1000MHz with his E4300. You don't have the command per clock set at 1T?? What voltage are you setting for the vdimm?. You have tried switching ram slots? Did you read the effects of dropping down your default multiplier on page 92?

The Arctic Freezer 7 Pro is on!

Just a note for people interested in this cooler on this motherboard. You should not need to trim the corner. In fact you may not need to bend the fin up. I found this out after the fact. I trimmed and bent when there is plenty of clearance plus the heatsink swivels to one side (May be a problem with PSU's close to the motherboard though so beware). If you are using a fan on the Northbridge then yes you probably will need to trim and bend.

Oh well it's done now.

I used the Arctic MX1 thermal paste as supplied (Did not want to risk my own thermal anymore). With all fans on I am idling at 28c and 30c each core. Under load in Orthos for 5 minutes (OK I know I should go for a lot longer but it seemed to sit at same temps for many minutes so may not budge too much even running for an hour). 44c on one core occasionally dipping down to 43c on the other.

Now the burn in time. I really hope that the paste does not shift off the plate too much (I may have a concave CPU heat plate). Otherwise I am stuffed. I won't know for a while.

Wish me luck!

EDIT: I took the case fans down to 5v and the Arctic fan down to 40% in Speedfan just to see how it fares. 30c and 33c but pure silence. Oh bliss!

Please let it stay cool!

well, went thru some more tweaking on the oc for my e6600, i think the cpu is the issue. i was able to hit 400mhz/1600mhz with the multiplier downed to 8x from the default 9x. i now have the 3.2ghz cpu speed as b4 but ram is now on 1:1 with the fsb.

my guess is this means the cpu is the bottleneck for the overclock, but i have not seen temperatures go higher than 37C idle. so i dont think it's overheating, i will recheck my mx-1 paste when i get home. that thingis not easy to spread evenly across the surface, and i'm just not sure about putting a dab on the middle and pressing the fan on top to spread it. i think i will try that tonight or over the weekend.

Well then you only have one thing left to do, overclock that son of a gun! You have a fan over the NB?

Read the instructions if you don't believe me. Don't try to spread it. They use a machine to put a even coat on it at the factory. I take it off ( they put to much on) and re-apply with a good dab in the center.
http://www.arctic-cooling.com/downloads/installation/install_mx1_retail.pdf

Also the die's on the chip ( the part that gets hot ) are in the center. The pins are on the outer edge. Even AS5 states the same procedure for the newer processors.

Core 2 - just been looking at your sig. How the hell do you get those clocks with those voltages? 3448 on 1.325? 431 on 1.39 for cpu? Wow!

Just got my Asus P5N-E motherboard with an C2D E4300, Tuniq Tower 120, and OCZ DDR2 800 RAM. I was able to OC it to 3.2 Ghz. I realize that I could probably go a little higher, but I am pretty happy with the current speed.

The next thing I need to do is to adjust the fan speeds since it's a bit loud right now. I installed Speed Fan, but couldn't find any config files on their site. Does anyone have a config file for Speed Fan they could send me? Also, how good is the Asus BIOS for controlling the fans? Thanks.

he has uber memory rated at ddr2 1066. i'm really starting to question my memory now as i seem to be in a rare few that can't get 1T timings.

Good chip. Lately I have been doing Auto Vcore and Auto Vchip and I hit my best clock with memory 1:1 and vcore 1.42 Auto set by bios

Here's my best with memory 1:1

OC 485.6x8 memory 1:1 Super Pi 15.672

CPU-Z Validator

EDIT: Now to work on timings at that speed. Hope to get that 5-5-5-15 2T to 4-4-4-12 2T or even better 4-3-3-9 2T

Here are some memory timings comparisons and 3Dmarks

All was done at 400x8 =3200MHz --- Auto vcore, Auto NB, vdimm 2.17 for 800MHz 4-4-4-12 1T and 1066MHz 5-5-5-15 2T , 2.25 for 1143MHz 5-5-5-15 2T

OC 400x8 ram 800MHz 4-4-4-12 1T

OC 400x8 ram 1066MHz 5-5-5-15 2T

OC 400x8 ram 1143MHz 5-5-5-15 2T

FM 3dMark 06 400x8 800MHz 4-4-4-12 1T

FM 3dMark 06 400x8 1143MHz 5-5-5-15 2T

The general guide for setting up Speedfan is on page 92. If you want quite on stock cooler (Fan 1) set to about 75%. Any lower will see your temps raise a fair bit. You may be lucky though and be able to drop the speed further.

I just installed an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro and am able to pull the fan speed as low as 40% and still have a good idle temps (Not tried full load yet at that percentage though and NO overclocking yet either so may need to revise the percentage).

I will try to do an overclock if it stays stable temps over the next couple of days. Not right now. I had some issues with the stock cooler so do not wish to fall into the same problems with heat. There is no fan on the Northbridge. I would only do a moderate overclock anyhow. Possibly up to 3Ghz. I am not an overclocker. I prefer silence from my fans.

generally, if i get crashes while booting to windows xp, does that mean i have voltages set too low? or perhaps something is overheating.

there's seem to be a few things taht occur when my system is unstable:
1. will not boot to bios after saving settings, remedied by pushing the reset button which will usually allow me to get into bios to re-tweak settings, if not, cmos reset will do the trick.
2. crashes on or after windows loading screen.
3. constant crashes of WoW during play followed by memory address errors, usually happens when i actually manage to boot to windows with 1T timings.

Welcome Aboard Rand3000

Nice job with that E4300! We've been talking about that chip most of the morning. Maybe you can give some details on how you reached 1600/800?? Did you use an 8 multiplier or 9?? What your ram speed and timings?? Put your setup and setting in your sig.

That was done before I changed memory ( PC6400C5 ). Good processor. Does not need much voltage and runs very cool. You should give them back the E6600 and try an E6400. More fun. I think. I haven't tried an E6600 so I can't say what to do.

Thanks Core2 for welcoming me here. Here's what I did for the OC:

Using the default 9x multiplier.

Had to manually set the RAM timings to 4-4-4-15 with 2.0v (I'm running memory Unlinked).

Increased vcore to 1.475 and vmch to 1.563.

I then changed FSB to 1400 (3.15 Ghz) and ran Orthos and everything was stable.

I next changed FSB to 1488 (3.35 Ghz) and Windows booted just fine, but Orthos gave errors.

So I decided to back it down and went to 1422 FSB (3.2 Ghz) and ran Orthos, SuperPI, and a couple of other tests and it has been perfectly stable. Idle CPU temp is 34C and under load it is 44C.

I'm having problems updating my profile, but here are my full system specs:

Asus P5N-E SLI with C2D E4300 @ 3.2 Ghz
Tuniq Tower 120
OCZ Platinum Rev 2 DDR2 800 Mhz 2 GB RAM
eVGA GeForce 7950 GT 256 MB
Western Digital 500 GB SATA 3.0 Gbps HD
Antec Liberty 500W PSU

This may be a dumb question, but where is Page 92? I only see 47 pages of posts here. I'm also using the Tuniq Tower 120 cooler, which is keeping my system nice and cool so I definitely have room to lower the fan speed. Thanks.

It really depends on what you plan to do. An E6400 will probably give you more OC options judging from what I have seen. I am happy with my E6600 right now (Heat permitting) and will probably be just as happy with a moderate OC. Those E4300's really look like a great deal if you plan on an OC vs tight budget.
