Cika,

I have both the P180 with the Ultra 120 and will put the system together tomorrow, so I,ll let you know what the result is. From the looks of it, it will fit.

Should I go with that instead? Plus the fan would blow vertically into the PSU's fan I'd imagine, which sounds more ideal.
and I imagine that with the retention brackets, the weight of the Ultra 120 won't do any damage or cause stress on the mobo, right? I've never really dealt with such large heatsink units so I naturally would worry.

oh, and if it matters, my case is the NZXT Lexa.

I am having issues with sleep mode and my P5N-E SLI and cannot figure out why the hell it is doing this. It will go into S3 fine, now that I switched the USBPW1-4, USBPW5-8, and KBPWR jumpers on the board to +5VSB, before it wouldn't even go into sleep successfully. But it won't come back out of sleep. If I press the space bar on the keyboard, everything spins up, fans at full blast, but Vista doesn't come back up. If I hit the reset button, it will reset, POST, and then Vista resumes instead of doing a full boot. I don't know why the reset and POST is needed to bring Vista back up. I haven't had a machine act like this before, and I've built plenty. Stock speeds or OC'd doesn't matter, it behaves the same.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 @ 2.3GHz
2 x 1GB OCZ PC6400 @ 800MHz (unlinked in BIOS), RAM in black slots
ATI Radeon X800 XL, stock, Catalyst 7.2
WD SATA drives 250GB and 320GB, 16MB cache
Sony DVD burner
Vista Ultimate

Also, what's the recommended ATK0110 version for Vista? The one supplied on Windows Update is from 2004.

Bump ... anyone have any ideas on this?

Hi, I am newbie to creating a computer as well as to this forum. If this is posted in the wrong space, my apologies and please point to where or what I should do. If you can help, that would be most appreciated.

So, I put it together a few days ago. I get unpredictable "fatal errors" (XP 32-bit Professional) all the time, epecially when doing a data transfer from external drive to an internal drive. (e.g. C:\DOCUME~1\Greg\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb51b.dir00\Mini040507-03.dmp C:\DOCUME~1\Greg\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERb51b.dir00\sysdata.xml )

I ran Memtest. I get memory errors detected quickly. "Copyting betweeen 23423ba and 23423ba9c did not result in accurate copy." -- or some alpha/numerics similar to this.

Not sure if the memory I bought is the wrong kind or if I need to adjust BIOS settings. It could also be something else I do not know and am bummed to spend so much and have issues. If I bought the wrong RAM please suggest one to get as replacement.

Note. I have never had to do much in BIOS so if you assist please in elementary English. If you have questions, please fire them off. I will do my best to answer.

Lastly, I built almost the same config but for my wifey and she has same issues. Her computer differences are:
OCZ Flex XLC 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
DIAMOND X1950PRO512PCIE Radeon X1950PRO 256-bit GDDR3 Video Card

With appreciation to all!!! g23

The system.

You can see the heat sink has ~1cm clearance from the top fan.

Oh and even with the raised P182 tray the HSF clears when closing the cover.

Hope this helps,
Nick

Thank you Radarbeam. That was very helpfull,i'm gonna buy one for myself.

Would anybody that have cooling fans on the NB heatsink be kind enough to post a photo of it to see how you've set them up?

Thanks,
Nick

Ok, I have 2 minor problems. First is this, when it goes thru it's memory check when posting it will show 2096128K (OK) 2097152K INSTALLED

Memtest86+ shows all 2 gigs, tests fine, Win XP Pro shows 2 gigs, but in BIOS, shows 2048 installed 2047 usable. Do I have a bad MOBO? or bad Memory? Memory is currently in the black slots..

Second problem, even tho I'm ORTHOS Stable for 24 hours (BLEND test for 24 Hrs. and Stress CPU with Gromacs 24 Hrs) when I run 2 instances of Folding @ Home, Windows will lock up solid within 24 hrs or less.. I've increased VCore to the next step above 1.475 (1.48125 I think) I've also dropped the FSB to 391FSB (1565QDR) and it just locked up after running 48+ Hrs.. I'm not sure what to do next.. Should I up the NB Voltage? or up the VCore again.. I'd like to get it stable as close as 1600QDR as I can. Even higher if I can keep the Core temps below 80C.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any suggestions..

Didn't see it mentioned in the last 4-5 pages so I'll ask some of the people who keep up with this thread:

Is there a problem with this board burning out RAM? In particular, RAM in slots 1 and 3? I've now had my 2nd 2 x 1GB kit burn out on me, both seated in slots 1 and 3 after running fine for about a month. 1st time was just 2GB total, second time was 4GB total system RAM. Spoke to my brother over the weekend and before I even got to talking about the dead RAM he brought it up saying this board seemed to have problems with burning out RAM sticks.

Anyone else having this problem? Luckily I don't have an immediate need for 4GB until I move to Vista, but I'd like to know if I need to RMA this board ASAP. Personally, I wouldn't mind washing my hands of it entirely as its been mostly a disappointment for me.

After I installed my new ASUS P5N-E SLI, and updated the BIOS to v04.01. When I installed my SCSI adapter AHA29160, with 4 SCSI HDD, the system didn?t boot after the SCSI HDD detection. It detect all the HDD correctly , but didn?t continue booting. If I put out the HDD cables (not removing the SCSI adapter), it worked fine. The problem is that every time a try to connect an SCSI HDD to the SCSI adapter it stop just after detecting the HDD. (It crash the machine, I can?t enter the BIOS after putting the HDD)
Everything works fine when I didn?t use any SCSI HD. (I already cleared the CMOS several times)

For some reason ntune version 5.05.25.00 is not able to report voltage values for cpu, memory...etc.
Does anyone else have this problem? Or is it just me?

If ntune doesn't work with this board, can anyone recommend another program for monitoring bus speeds and voltages?

Also, anyone tried the new 0505 bios?

thanks alot.

hey chizow

You know, i also have been suspecting this board burns out RAM.. When i first got the board, I threw in a set of 2 GB Corsair PC6400C4 XMS (promos). The board booted fine and I started XP installation. After formating the hard drive, and system files copied, was prompted to reboot the system to continue XP installation, then I got BSOD, the board would not boot after this. Then i found out one stick of RAM was bad, the other stick boots fine. So this really made me suspicous of the board burned up the RAM... May be the Vram is unstable with fluctuations/spikes? and some RAM just can't handle it?

This can happen with any board especially with new RAM you've just bought. Happened to me with my AsRock 939 Dual SATAII board with Corsair value RAM. RMA'd both sticks and the replacements have been running for a year now just fine.

Most likely explanation is a bad RAM stick, nothing more....

santyclaws:
I have the same processor as you, though slightly less cooling on the mother board. From reading forums and articles I've gathered that the E6300 chip will in most cases do 3.5GHz+ if it has sufficient cooling (core temps stay under 85) If you suspect it's the processor, you could try and reduce the speed of your cpu fan to see if the computer crashes quicker when the cpu temp gets higher. if it doesn't you'll know for sure it's the mother board. If the system crashes from this, I'd say more voltage, and make sure your cpu fan doesn't fail

I may be wrong, but I think it might be worth trying a lower LDR multiplyer (reduce to 3 or 4x) unless I got it wrong, this is the north bridge/south bridge ratio, and reducing it will cause the south bridge to run slower. So, by doing this you'll know that the south bridge isn't causing the trouble

cchangchien: there's loads of software out there that does this. I use speedfan

g23: your problem is probably caused by your RAM. download memtest86 v1.7 to test it. If it gets errors, go into your bios, disable SLI memory, set the timings to 5-5-5-18-2t-trc22 (rest to auto), voltage to 1.9 and speed to 533. These settings should work regardless of what ram you have (although it'll be slower, so it's not a permanent solution). You should be able to get whatever speed your memory is rated for, however it is known to be difficult with this motherboard. try putting your ram in the black slots, did the trick for me. there was no way I could get the same speeds in the yellow slots.

Most likely explanation is a bad RAM stick, nothing more....

Its possible its isolated to my board, but typically with defects like this it can affect an entire board line with faulty design, BIOS settings, or components (bad caps etc.). Just seeing if anyone else had been hit by this problem since my brother heard something about it and he doesn't even own the board. He had only did some preliminary research on his next upgrade.

Just to clarify, the 2 kits that died on me were different kits, one a Ballistix PC-8000 kit and the other a Buffalo PC-6400 kit. Both run at high default voltages though, so as ccchangchien indicated it could easily be the sticks not being able to handle voltage spikes from the already high voltage. Still though, the board shouldn't be spiking voltages to begin with and if it is, that's a defective board imo.

Anyways, I'll try to dig up the thread and info about this. I think my brother mentioned it was on the Asus forums. In the meantime, I'm going to leave slots 1 and 3 unpopulated and would advise anyone else with this board to do the same. I've never had any RAM die on me ever....to have 2 kits from 2 different makes go boom within a month of each other in the same slots on the same board indicate there might be a problem with my board.

Has anyone else noticed that when rebooting the nvidia controller takes a while to dectect the raid arrays? If I do a cold start it detects the arrays quickly and continues booting. When I restart the system, the bios takes about 30-40 seconds to detect the raid arrays on the nvidia controller.

A Melbye,

Thanks for the reply. I ran memtest, saw errrors immediately. I put RAM in black slots. Changed timings to Muskins specs and to clock 2. Viola! no issues again. Did not require a futher changes; RAM still at 800 and auto voltage.

As for wifey's, OCZ RAM did not work. I RMA'ed them for G SKILL RAM I read about that people liked with our MBs and not as pricey. Did the same repective modifications for her new RAM and now no issues.

Got the bright idea to go to Vista Ultimate. Got it for free. now occasionally when I reboot, our computers reboot 2 to 3 times before they settle in. No crashes once settled in, but still weird. Not sure if there are some driver confilicts with CS2 or other pre-Vista programs. I have tried to not install anything un-needed until newer Vista-versions come out.

Regardless, thanks for the thoughts!

1T timing issue is not fixed. I suspect that it's a problem with the board design rather than the bios. Otherwise I'd expect it to be fixed by now..
