What does MM stand for? I have no idea what my skill is rated as, but my win-loss ratio is pretty much 1:1 (with the vast majority of my games played without anyone I know).

Honestly, I'd put myself in the "High" category, but something tells me Dota 2 thinks I'm "Normal", given the teammates it gives me.

What should I do? Only play with people on my team that I know can play well to get my "MM" up or whatever?

FYI I currently have 121 wins, and about 119 losses. And I know I've said this before, but a lot of those losses are due to people on my team who literally are clueless, or who don't speak English (seriously, what is with all the South Americans on the US servers?). Yea, I'm not an amazing player, but I know how to make plays (I have my pro moments), and I know when I make mistakes most of the time and own up to them, which means I'm not totally clueless.

Bottom line, just enjoy the game. Almost everyone has 50% winrate. The only exceptions are the very top (0.01%+). Even the pros have 53-57% winrate.

That's how MM works. This is same in Starcraft 2, LoL, HoN or any games that employ advanced MM algorithm.

If it wasn't 50/50, where would the wins come from? For every winner, there is a loser. Not everyone can win all the time. I remember I was on a 9 game winning streak. Then I lost 14 games in a ROW. That's at least 10-14 hours of pure misery in a whole week.

I currently have 1191 wins, 1189 loss. Winrate is NOT an indication of skill (biggest misconception of pubs). You could have someone else who has same wins/losses and belong in a low tier. You move up MM rating by winning matches you're supposed to lose (you're lower end player out of 10) and earn rating.

Of course there's no way to tell what matches are favored against you. Valve hid that to avoid flaming and deter poisonous behavior. For example, Heroes of Newerth (another Dota clone) has rating number visible to everyone next to your name. People are already fighting before the match starts (GG IM CARRY, YOU SUCK, BUY WARDS ETC).

Yup, anyone who has above 50% winrate under 500 wins will EVENTUALLY stabilize down to 50%. Again, the only exception is the top top 0.01%+.

I was in the normal bracket, hovering around 47% with around 200 wins, then a switch flipped for me. I had a two month or so stretch where I won over 75% of my games and my win rate jumped up to 54%. I was put in my place quickly.

You'll be 50%, come back after 1000 wins (2000 games).

You'll still end up at 50%, but it might be less frustrating, maybe. Let's put it this way, I have a 55% WR with 2 of my friends and 43% with another guy.

Ultimately though, if you queue with others at some point it's going to pair you up with the absolute dregs. Last night I was playing with the two 55% guys and we did not have very good heroes (Pudge, Axe, Dazzle) to independently effect the battlefield. The randoms had Puck and PA. We had to deal with Banish and Disruption on the other team. We tried to push and gank all we could but it didn't matter because the other two assholes on our team just wanted to do their own thing all game. And they were BAD. Puck would die after long fights without using his ult, PA would chase people for over 5 seconds without using dagger. At one point we controlled their forest for 5 minutes ganking them over and over waiting for the other two dipshits to show up before all 5 of the other team eventually showed up and rolled us. So frustrating.

I read in here a few of the heroes I like to play (snipe, dazzle) are garbage. Could be just because I have played <50 games, but I feel like I am decent with them. Went 20-1 the other night with sniper... but I guess it's probbably because I am playing with people who still suck after <50 games.

Looking for some heroes that might require some more skill to become good at and dominate. Something like Riki maybe? Seems like he is very popular in pubs and majority of the time, players wreck with him if they can level up fast.

Riki gets shut down easy when the other team just buys sentry wards in the lane. Sniper can be strong but can be ganked really easy too.

Rikki snow balls only because in alot of pub games people don't buy sentry wards... once you buy wards, dust and gem, I would say 50% of my games against Rikki, the Rikki ends up rage quiting because otherwise he is just a feeder.

Dazzle is not garbage. He's an amazing support and very frustrating to play against. If Riki is wrecking your pubs, then you gotta keep learning & go up the ladder.

Gyro - Flak owns late game, nukes own mid game, and chasing with Rocket Barrage does stupid damage early/mid game. This guy has everything.

Nyx - Covered here time and time how OP this hero is.

Qop - Best mid hero in the game, assuming equal skill, you should be winning every 1v1 mid (except few direct QoP counters like OD. Puck is about even).

If you want to just pubstomp, then pick easy pubstomp heroes. They work great in the lower tier games, but if you get promoted to the higher tiers they become less and less effective.

So far my favs to play are sniper, sand king, and nightstalker (nightwalker? Not 100% sure on the name. The guy who's move speed is like 500 at night).

I also had some success with bounty hunter. But again.. I am only in low level pubs 100% of the time.

Leshrac and windrunner are fun heroes to play. I like them because of how versatile they are, they can be a support, but if your carries are horrible, you can farm up some items and get stuff done. When I was new my last hitting sucked so I liked to play gankers so I could go around and kill stuff

Yep... I'm barely over 200 wins... a little over 50% wins... ironically queing in with 3 to 4 of my other friends caused most of my losses... I just got off a 5 game losing streak the other day...

every hero and every items is useful, nothing is garbage.
it only defend on situation and how you use it.

with experience you will learn how to counter certain heroes and items

Riki gets shut down easy when the other team just buys sentry wards in the lane. Sniper can be strong but can be ganked really easy too.

mistake most of riki's make is try to hunt alone, if riki can stick with teams and don't get caught he is a great assassin.

another thing i have noticed is riki try to over do things like scout or roam jungles where they normally get caught. they lose important farm and xp because of this, which makes then weak.

after all riki is a carry and it needs farm like ck, ursa etc

Riki can be a good ganker once he has the items to catch a hero that strayed off alone and kill him quickly. But, before you have those levels / items, you shouldn't be running around unwarded territory without your team to back you up.


Is there a way to change the hero pick screen to be a grid. I hate the scroll through method and wish it would go away, forever.
