Like Smackababy's response states, if you really want to jump to the next MMR level, just stick with playing your best hero who is preferably a pubstomper.

For me, I'd rather stay in the low MMR until I can actually get decent, because at the higher MMR's you're going to have teammates who are a lot harsher on you and you're going to be expected to perform well. This creates the problem of learning new heroes being more difficult.

Zeze had this issue, earlier in the thread, and basically had to smurf to learn / perfect new hero strategies (I believe that's what happened but I could be wrong). In the bottom tier you can pick whatever hero you want and be ok as long as you know the core mechanics of the game.

The problem I have from playing in the lower bracket MMR games, is that I like to analyze my play and see what I could do to be better. In the higher games, the players are generally more coordinated and skilled, so you can learn better to avoid things like ganks and such by watching them. In the lower games, I really think people put 0 thought into their play and build. It is like just all random. Plus, you rarely get hero synergy.

If you really want to move up in MMR, queue with a friend and pick heroes that compliment each other perfectly. Then lane together and dominate.

Alternately join a guild that favors team play where you know that everybody has a headset.

Simply playing with the same group of people on a regular basis, where everybody is ok with each other and communicates via headset, is an enormous advantage over the regular pub game players.

You say this, but I only find it true in maybe 50% of the games I play in Very High.

Regarding the low / medium / high, etc. - are there subdivisions within each of these?

I feel in High there is just enough competence that the single most deciding factor in who wins a match is the hero comp.

These are just the "brackets" that you can view your previous games by the Watch Tab (Recent Games>Filter Your name, and by level)

I started playing I think in Feb 2012, and I didn't hit the high bracket until probably August or so, and not the Very High bracket until 2013. I think I have been playing worse and having bad luck with All Random lately and I have dropped a bit.

Is the MMR based purely on wins? Does it do any other calculations? Like if I am in the low bracket and my team wins, but I go 30-2 or something I gain more rating, or if I go 2-30 I gain less rating? Is there even any information on the rating system?

About a week ago, a dev confirmed that it is an ELO-type system.

http://dev.dota2.com/showthread.php?t=98311&page=3&p=664107#post664107

Yes, we use a Elo-type system. We have data that shows that it correlates well with a number of quality metrics.

Showing players their Elo has proven to cause a lot of unwanted behaviour. (The same problems exist in Chess.)

We know that there really is value in knowing how the match was formed, and even in knowing which players were the best, and also who was partied up with whom. It helps to analyze your own skill and try to understand how to get better. We are actively working to try to figure out what data we CAN provide to players (perhaps after the match) to help them do this analysis, without causing too many of the undesirable effects I mentioned. Right now, if there's a steamroll, people look at the only data available to them, which is totally understandable. Also, I believe that there have been problems in the past where it was not doing a good enough job segregating truly inexperienced players from experienced players. We've improved on that. However, our definition of "new player" probably doesn't match exactly with many players. (Their definition is often: "the other guy has fewer wins that I do.") And we have to deal with smurfs and players coming in from other games in the genre, where win count is definitely totally unrelated to the skill level of the player.

Just one last comment on this. Elo is a TERRIBLE way to give players a sense of "progress." Many (most?) people reach a plateau, and their Elo stabilizes. It is simply not mathematically possible for Elo to keep increasing in general for players indefinitely as more and more games are played.

Given this reality, if players used Elo to measure "progress", we would constantly be reminding them that they are NOT making any. That would be really bad.

It's a chess system, where everyone starts with a base rating, let's say 800. You win and you take points from the other player. How this works itself with a team game I don't know. Basically, if you win, you will gain ELO "points" and if you lose, you drop. If you beat a team with a much higher rating, you will gain a lot more points than you would if you beat a team with a much lower rating.

Something seems to be working because almost all players have a winning % between 48 and 52%.

Did anyone get their immortal item due to compendium purchases reaching the #6 goal?

All I got was a Kunka "Leviathan Whale Blade." And I don't even use Kunka! D:

Patch is now live. Time to go green.

To improve spectator experience for The International 2013, Dota TV has a couple of nifty features. To begin with, spectators will now be able to click on Wards to see the AOE they affect.

The loadout has been improved so you can have a larger preview space for your cosmetics.

The Immortal Reliquary should now be delivered to you. Open it to unlock your Compendium Immortal item.

You have a chance to get one of the five immortal items | Cauldron of Xahryx, Mace of the Chosen, Leviathan Whale Blade, Scree'auk's Talon & Whalehook. Each item comes with a unique effect specific to it.

For eg: Kunkka's immortal sword adds a whale to his torrent, Vengeful Spirit gives out a new effect for Wave of Terror and etc.

You can unlock the rest of the Smeevil mounts by finishing up your Fantasy Team and your Main Event Predictions.

Dota TV now has support for the Xbox Controller. You can now just relax back on your couch and watch The International without having to get up. Here are your controls.

The Tournament Match Counter has now been revamped to be more clear and visible.

Does anyone have tips for playing Quas-Wex invoker? I prefer Exort because of the global-ness of Sunstrike and the damage you can do with the spirits as well as Meteor+Blast, and it seems a bit more of a solo play-style build. But generally this means that I don't have enough levels in Q and W to do what I want with Ghost Walk and Cold Snap. So I tried playing Quas-Wex today, and it seems I suck at it. It could be because we didn't have enough coordination or something, or I'm just bad at Invoker generally.

Quas Wex is really had to play now because of invokers horrible base damage, you pretty much need to go with blade of attack, tango, and branch in order to even hope to do decently.

Yeah, that's what I found too. The recommended quas-exort guide had blades of attack, and I'm so glad I got that otherwise I would have done really poorly in lane. 39 base damage is way too low IMO.

We basically met these two (Onipix and Pe4CeFu1) through MM in our previous game and absolutely destroyed the other team while having fun with trolling so we decided to play together again.
These two went all out by playing their top hero with us and I was just taken away by a good visage. I know visage mid isn't a great idea when it comes to the pro scene but this guy had the skills to keep up with that style of play.

I'm totally new to dota 2 and have been playing the tutorials. I do not understand why once ive hit lv 16 and my abilities are maxed out, all i ever get is a red error msg saying ability is max and i can never use any of my 4 abilities any longer, only the basic attack. What am i doing wrong? Ive restarted the game etc, always the same things happens around lv 15-16 in every game i play. What is the purpose if you no longer can use the 4 abilities once youre maxed out?

This is happening because the game thinks you are trying to add skill points instead of using the ability itself. You can either spend the skill point, or simply press the hotkey "O" and resume using your abilities.

"O" is the shortcut to assign any skill points you have remaining from leveling up (You should notice a "Level Up" in a yellow box above your character portrait if any skill points still need to be assigned.)

There are four abilities you can skill and those shortcuts are Q, W, E, R. Since your primary three skills + ultimate only use 15 skill points, and max hero level is 25, the remaining skill points will go into Stats, shortcut U.

Take notice when you level up, and you click the "level up +1" button. There are FIVE BOXES (not four) for selectable level ups. The first yellow box is the stats box, the remaining four are skills.

It is always best to use keyboard shortcuts, that's just a second FYI.
