Using a mic doesn't limit that at all. You still hear the people being assholes and you also have zero communication. Stopping what you're doing and typing out something is pretty much worthless in situations where you need to communicate. If you don't want to deal with people who are mean, you shouldn't be on the internet playing team games.
Using a mic adds someone's presence to a game.
When someone (who isn't using a mic) is being yelled at by some asshole, all that someone has to do is refrain from replying and the asshole will sound like he's talking to a brick wall. Either said asshole realizes this and stops, or continues on so the original player mutes him and gains the satisfaction this guy is raging to himself.
And I def disagree with that last line. Being online shouldn't excuse bad behavior, only that it is to be expected. Maybe the good spirited people should use the muting fucntion sooner, but I'm ok with stupid people not getting their team's cooperation.
/shrug I think mixing up differing skill levels is a really good thing. When I first started Dota ages ago, I remember see exactly what you are talking about. Bad players like me mixed in with other noobs and sometimes a couple really good high skill players.
Looks like you and I had different experiences in DotA1 then.
I wouldn't mind your scenario of being paired with/against better players for the same reasons you stated. I recall too many experiences being tainted by having players significantly worse (or completely new), thereby digging a very huge, frustrating hole for my team to dig out of. To make matters worse, those players often fed and then left.
