Guys I have another easy question...lol...

my stuff arrived today, it's all built, yay! Except I'm waiting for my OS hard drive to arrive...I ordered a 320GB WD (wd3200YS), figured I'd go the enterprise line for a touch more reliability perhaps...

Anyways, which SATA port should I use for this? I'm not doing raid, just AHCI...do I use the purple GIGABYTE SATA2 PORT or the regular intel ICH9R??

Also I made a boot floppy to install the INTEL ICH9R when I install windows (F6), but what if I want to do raid later on....do I need to preinstall the RAID drivers somehow? (you can probably tell this is my first RAID/SATA board...lol)

Thanks for being so helpful!

Thanks guys for your help. Now I would like to know what do you think about this options:

1. Crucial Ballistixs. I'm quite sure that this uses MICRON D9 chips, however some reviews shows that this model aren't the best for OC, I couldn't find anybody that reach the 1000MHZ with this model. ($69.99 after rebate)

2. Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4. The reviews that I saw shows that this model are quite good for the OC (even better than the Ballistix), but I belive that the RAM modules used in the review are those with the MICRON D9 chips. The problem is that I'm not sure about the version that I will get from the sellers, and I may get the version with PROMOS chips. ($64.00 after rebate)

3. Teem Extreem TXDD2048M800HC4DC. I'm sure this model uses MICRON D9 chips, and the reviews that I saw shows that are good for the OC. ($59.99 after rebate)

4. Geil GX22GB6400UDCA. I found on the web that this model uses MICRON D9 chips, however the reviews shows that aren't the best for OC, the ballistixs seems to be better. ($64.99 after rebate)

5. OCZ Platinium rev 2. I know that this model doesn't use the MICRON chips, but the reviews shows that this model has very good possibilities for th OC. I found that you can reach the 1000Mhz quite easily. ($58.99 after rebate)

I know that there are a lot of models that are better than those that I have mentioned, but most of them are out of my budget (like the G-Skill HZ or the Mushkin XP6400). Also I found some models that are very attractive, like the Patriot Extreme Performance (low latecy), and some others from OCZ and Corsair.

What do you think?, I really don't want to feel that I didn't choose the rigth RAM for me.

1. I really like my ballistix. They are micron d9. I got mine for $59 in July

2. I think you are right. At this price, they are the Promos chip that don't OC as well.

Why do you need RAM to overclock to 500MHz sorts of speeds? With a x10 multiplier the cpu clock aint going to go above 400MHz on air cooling. The typical overclock for this chip, after the pin mod, looks to be around 325MHz. You be better off buying the cheapest PC2-6400 or even buying overclocking PC2-5400 such as the ballistix.

Could someone respond to my last questions about with SATA port to put my OS drive on? I'm about done building my system...all the parts arrived, yay!

I'm reading elsewhere just to use the yellow if you aren't needing RAID, but what if I want to but a identical 320gb LATER (the one my OS uses) and do raid then without reinstalling everything? Is that even possible? Is it as easy as physically changing the port or do I just need to enable the AHCI on the purple ports to begin with to save myself trouble later?

I just want the option later....what I'm going to do is give up on having raid for my OS drive (that's the worse negative I can think of....) and just use the purple ones for the external Esata bracket, I'll go external later if I need eSata (want to pick up a fast drive for music/midi production later anyways....

Do you guys know if hard drive performance heavily influences constant TORRENT downloading / multitasking etc...?

Yes, you will benefit from RAID but my understanding is you will need to set it up BEFORE installing the OS, unless maybe with mirroring.

This is because the data will be stored across the two drives, either striped or spanned.

(However i may be wrong)

I also used the purple for ESATA but you can always go back..

CRAP!!!! My system will not post, beep, or give video...I've testing the monitor this time and it works (this is the same problem I had which prompted all of this upgrading!) OMG....why me? I've reseated the memory, tried one stick...reseated the video card....unplugged all power everywhere except the CPU (the 12v cpu plug IS plugged in as well as the CPU fan header) and case fans are still plugged in.... I just tried running it only with my video card, cpu and ram and case fans...NO BEEPS, NO POST, NO VIDEO! I switched the internal speaker cable around in case I had it backwards just to get beeps....nothing! I removed all memory....no beeps! Every fan in my computer spins except the CPU fan....but it hesitates once when powering up then doesn't move...

MY ram is CORSAIR 2.1v spec...does that have anything to do with it....it annoys me that this is the problem I had with my previous system and believed it would all be easily solved not, WTF?!?!

The Corsair memory? It might be DOA, but unlikely. Your memory is spec'd for 2.1v, and your board defaults to 1.8v. If your memory is the low latency C4 - 4-4-4-12 - variety, you might find that once you're able to boot up you will need to adjust the Mem timings manually, as well as the voltage. I've read that this is to allow the board compatibility with the widest variety of Ram.

I'm sorry about your troubles. That has to be frustrating. CPU inserted/seated correctly? Not too much thermal compound?

I'm using the same PSU, floppy, Optical Drives and hard drives (except one new hd I bought for the OS).

I'm also using the same PCI Sound card and PCI firewire PCI card.

I've removed the PCI cards and all power to everything else to test it....

The only fan that wasn't spinning was the CPU fan...so I tried taking it off of the CPU Fan header on the board and to another fan header...well guess what, now it spins...everything is running...no beeps, no video, no post however....tried resetting the CMOS...nothing....

It has to be my PSU or my Motherboard or possibly my CPU....but the same problem?! Gosh...I don't have anymore money....

*CJ,

I applied it exactly as per artic silver 5's website instructions for my cpu...just a thin line in the center....seemed the CPU installation went flawless (I've installed many processors, etc...) but this was my first duo core...not too hard though I think....

If anyone is willing to chat with me and help.....my AIM name is: clevtedge

Thanks.

is it a 24 pin psu or just a 20?

LOL when i built mine i forgot to put the extra power to the graphics card and it did all of the above ^^ maybe??

try unplugging everything that is not needed to POST. eg hdd, floppy etc and see..

20pin, but I checked gigabytes manual they said 20pin is fine....(I even tried it WITH a 24 pin adapter attached...same issue...)

my graphic card (cheapo placeholder card I bought until I can upgrade) is a x1650 saphire 512mb card....it has no power connector on it, good suggestion though.

yup I unplugged ALL except the core components...wierd that the 12v cpu fan won't power the CPU fan, but when I try a different board fan controller is works....???

The only thing that could cause this problem that was brought over from my old dead system is the PSU...I mean it has the same problem....I was getting random sudden power off/restarts with the computer.... I'm lead to believe that this is the culprit...gonna have to wait weeks now to have my computer up cause I just spent $850 and can't spend $10 more for this project...great. I'm really afraid to change it though, because I'll end up wasting the money if I'm wrong....got no friends into this hobby, so I can't borrow a PSU, etc...

Maybe I'll throw it all out the window and buy a typewriter.

(sigh)

mate now that you have said that im 90% sure that the PSU is your problems. Random reboots are a symptom of a stuffed psu.

Look on the bright side, its cheaper than most the other components and would be one of the starting points for replacing things for troubleshooting anyways.

Look @ seasonic m12. Its 500w but certified. (EG. doesnt say 650w and is only 480w LOL)
modular and all the cables are in the mesh stuff

they arent too expensive either. Mid range. I was rather suprised with the cooling fans on it too.

To the CPU? you mean the 4 pin P4 ATX 12v plug that's next to the socket (on the board) right??

and why would the cpu fan NOT spin in the CPU FAN header on the board, but only on the other board fan header I tried ("PWR FAN"), does the FAN HEADER draw too much power or is it defective in my situation?

It's $129 at newegg... would love that one, but I'm utterly broke 'cause of what I already ordered...was hoping for a half decent $50-$70 solution....

ARGH.
