I don't believe my Zalman 9500 has a manual speed control on it, it's either on or off unless I let the bios control it.

Is this true? Gigabyte does not say this is possible only that it reads the floppy while Asus makes it apparent this is a feature they want ppl to know about, using a USb flash drive to do a BIOS update.

Anyone else can confirm that this board can use a USB flash drive to update the BIOS through the built in QFlash utility?

but nobody else anywhere, not even gigabyte says you can use a flash drive. That's why I want to confirm. I do not want to have to buy a floppy to flash the BIOS.

I would turn the smart fan off, putting the fan on full bore, and then if you need finer control you can always add a fan speed control. Personally fan noise doesn't bother me, but having to fiddle with the bios for my fan to run when I want it to does.

oh and just a FYI there's a new Bios on the Gigabyte page:

Wow, I installed my E6850 into my GA-P35-DS3R, hooked up an ati x850xt and an old sata hd that had xp on it from a NF4 mobo and the sucker booted up properly and even loaded windows xp properly, with only a couple of HW updates. No BSODs and the mem even ran at the right speed! Intel kicks ass! My Crucial PC8500 gets REAL hot tho, is that normal? Its my first foray into DDr2.

Is this normal I mean the ram is detected and the pc boots up.
Thanks

I have that ram and it worked fine. My previous statement above says so. My only issue (which may not be an issue at all) is that that ram gets very hot. But It's the first time I've actually used DDR2 so that may be the norm. I used a 600W psu for testing the P35-DS3R mobo, Crucial Ballistix PC8500, E6850 CPU and an old ATI X850XT pcie video card. I used the SATA HD that already had Winxp Pro installed on it from a spare system that was a winfast NF4 mobo and this config booted up the first time with no errors, I even got into Winxp Pro with no problems. It prompted me for driver for the NIC and some PCI thing but other than that it has been stable. Memory timimgs and CPU showed up correctly in CPUID and I have run the system overnight in a 3dmark 2005 loop overnight and it was still running when I woke up in the morning. How many stick of ram are you using? If more than one, try one at a time.

Unfortunately I am having the same issue. I am getting a little better temp readings using "Core Temp" ver .95. I have had virtually no luck with any program as far as monitoring fan speeds etc. including gigabytes EZ Tune that came with the motherboardisgust;

For what ever reason the gigabyte EZ-Tune Software is way off on temperature readings. Stick with the Intel Thermal tool or the core temp software.

I have decided to get the GA-P35C-DS3R but before I place my order I have some questions:

What ram would you recomend?
Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4
GeIL DDR2 PC6400 Ultra 2 GB
Crucial BallistiX PC2-6400 2 GB (2 x 1GB)
Kingston HyperX DDR2-800 2GB (2x1024MB) Low Latency NVidia SLI-Ready
Other models? I wont be OC-ing, I just want something stable and hastle free.

Is there any problems with the boxed intel fan? Im probably getting the C2D Q6600.

thanx

In one of the instructions it does say you can use a floppy or a USB drive for the BIOS update. I kinda presumed they meant a flash drive and not an HD connected by a USB cable.

I've also read that there were some fan control issues and some DOA issues with this board from the customer reviews on newegg. Any thoughts?

Any issues with where the ultra ATA port is located on this board? I will be hooking my pata DVD drive to it, and being in the odd spot at the bottom of the board that it is, I probably will not be able to position my DVD drive in the top spot in my full tower.

I was thinking about getting an sata dvd drive, but i wanted to avoid any complications with installing the OS.

Yeah, the ATA port is all the way on the bottom of the mobo if in a tower config. Not the most convienient place but doable for me at least. My current Asrock mobo has it there also and I have managed to attach 2 ATA DVD burners to it without much hassle. Airflow may be an issue for some, but for me and my Lian-Li case its not as the HD cage comes before the ATA cable and I have 2 front fans blowing in, 1 120mm fan on the side blowing in and a rear outake fan. My prob when I actually put this in my Lian-Li case is the location of the 8 SATA ports. My asrock mobo has 4 SATA ports and the HD cage does press on them. I may need to buy some SATA cables that have a shorter plastic connector. I wish they would redesign SATA cables, too weak and pop out too easy. I want to eliminate ATA completely and go all sata as I have 8 ports on the P35 mobo but the cables are iffy. Plus, even tho I am RMAing my SATA DVD, I am not fully confident in SATA devices other than HDs.

I checked out Gigabytes ram compatability list and one of the few thats available in my part of the world is: GEIL 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC6400 800MHz Ultra 4-4-4-12, 2.3 v (GX22GB6400UDC)
Any one of you know how it performs on the mobo? Im not looking to OC much I just want stable operation.

I don't know about DOA's but the fan control has been an issue for me. When I had the SmartFan setting on in the bios, it had issues with the stock Intel HSF. Basically the fan would speed up or slow down depending on the heat, and sometimes the fan speed would fall below some unknown threshold and would constantly send out warning beeps. Since fan noise isn't something I particularly care about, I just turned off the smartfan, which then just runs the CPU fan at full speed. Which worked totally fine for me.

So I'll admit it was a little odd.

I think the Tuniq 120 comes with a fan control plate (correct me if I am wrong please), so I think I'll just turn off smartfan and use that manual control to control fan speed.

Noise is definitely a concern for me so if I had to run the fan at full speed all the time no matter what then I might have to consider another option.
