5t3v0,

Well I have two IDE hard drives....one I'm getting rid of ASAP, but the other one (400gb) is large and I would love to keep it...

Problem is, I don't have a cable long enough (in between the master/slave connectors) to make it work in one IDE port in my case (the HD's are inserted straight into the case instead of horizontally like the optical drives making it even more difficult) so I'd have to choose 400gb HDD vs DVD DL Writer.....crappy choice if you ask me....I guess I could try to find an unusual IDE cable that is super long between plugs.....

Ideas?

good suggestion sniperdaws, but I was able to get everything working....I just moved my burner and one of the SATA drives to the PURPLE ports...now they all work...go figure if that makes any sense...hope all my ports are working ok...

now I'm getting everything installed and going to be burning in my system a few more days...then it's overclock time!

Hi fellow OCukers,

I have a P35C-DS3R and q6600 q0 chip........ (full specs at bottom)

My system was running stable so I decided to run Prime95 25.4 at stock to make sure the CPU was fine before I started overclocking.

The first time I run it 2 cores failed at around 1 hour. Temps seemed to get up to around 58 for 2 cores and 53 for the other 2.

I had my memory running at 12 4 4 4 at default voltage so thought this may be the cause and changed it back to the default 15 5 5 5.

2nd time I ran Prime it failed within 1 minute on 1 core.

I ran it a 3rd time and this ran for around 30 minutes with 3 different cores failing.

I thought it maybe the C1R, TM2 and EIST so I disabled them all and ran it for a 4th time.

I left this overnight and this again had failed on 3 cores 1 core after 12minutes and the other 2 cores after 1 hour.

I am really upset as I have been waiting ages to build this rig and have bought some good quality components (in sig)

One thing I noticed is that the CPU voltage in bios is 1.2625V, but in CPU-Z it was between 1.184 and 2.000V - which to me is very low!!!!!!!

I have 2 screenies:-

Spluff,

Try these settings

gmch +.1
DDR2/ddr3 overvoltage +.3v

This should workd for 4-4-4-12 settings but you can try 5-5-5-15 first.

I think sniperdaws is setting his vcore to 1.344v or thereabouts. to get his stable at 3.2.

cheers mate........

I can try them........

But the worrying thing this is at default cpu (2400) and default memory (5 5 5 15).

Is this normal that you have to increase vcore and memory volts?

The other thing that worries me is that cpu-z shows such a lower figure and that to me could explain why prime95 dies?????

what u think.........

if you want 3.2 OC you are going to have to increase Vcore and the others. Switch over to this thread

Overclocking thread

Follow Sniperdaws. He has your q6600 and is up to 3.2 OC I believe.

cya there

Antec P180b
Corsair 520W
GA-P35C-DS3R Rev 1
Intel CD2 e4400 10x multiplier (stock at 2.0Ghz)
4GB Crucial Ballistix PC6400 DDR2 4-4-4-12 at 2.2v (this is what it's spec'd at)
2X320 Maxtor SATA
MSI 8600GT OC edition
Dual boot WinXP Pro 32bit / Vista Ult 64bit

Anyway, here's my situation. After putting everything together and loading the OS, I started to play around with OCing the cpu. I've heard good things about the E4300, E4400, etc. but I also heard some of the newer cpus aren't as good. So I started with something I thought would be easy (266Ghz FSB/2.66GHz). The stock vcore was at 1.325 and I just left it there. I set the memory ratio to what I believed to be 1:1 (2x) and the timings to the default for the ballistix (4-4-4-12 at 2.2v (+0.4v). It booted with no problems. But then I updated the WEI in Vista and I got a 4.7 score for my mem score. I thought this couldn't be right. So I started to mess with the mem settings. The only way for me to get above a 5 in WEI was to change the ratio to 1:2. This brought my score up to 5.4 (which is still odd to me)

To make a long story short, I had some random errors (BSOD, Freezing, Reboots). I thought maybe the memory was bad so I ran the mem diagnostic in vista and it found something. So I downloaded memtest86+ and after 4 hours, it found something too. So I figured my memory was bad. So I took out 2 sticks and left the other 2 in dual channel. Ran memtest again. After 6 hours, no errors. So I swapped the sticks with the other pair and ran it again. No Errors. I put all the ram back in and boot up and I get no issues running at 266FSB. So I'm totally confused now.

I ran Orthos to see if there were some other issues. No problems after 5 hours. I decided to play with the OC some more. After trying to get the mem timings right, the systems appears to be stable. I run Orthos again just to be sure. It failed after 1 hour. I ran it again just to see what would happen and it failed again after 12 minutes.

Needless to say, I don't know if I have bad memory, bad MB, bad CPU, or maybe my setup can't handle the OC. I recently reset everything to the spec settings (200FSB, 1:1 ratio, 4-4-4-12 at 2.2v) and so far orthos hasn't found any errors. I'll let it run all night and tell you what happens.

On a side note, I was downloading a 100mb file off the net, and it kept getting hung after a few minutes of downloading. I thought this was an issue with the file server so I decided to try and download the same file off my laptop. It downloaded just fine! I tried to download it again from my setup and it hung again. I ran a ping test and it came back with a small amount of packet loss, but so did my laptop. I'm wondering if that is an indication that my mobo is acting up. (on top of my other OCing issues)

Any suggestions on what I can try to isolate the problem?

I have the same memory - 4 sticks - Crucial Ballistix PC6400 and I had the same problem. Actually went to some thing very similar to your experience.

2 things helped:

1. although the memory is spec'd at 2.2V I found running at 2.0 or 2.1 provide better stability and lower heat. Since your are running at fairly low FSB, lower VDimm is the right thing to do.

2. I had an Asus MB and I switched MB, same memory, problem disappeared. This was after I changed PS, HD, Video, reinstalled XP and cetera....

There was nothing wrong with my memory ( or yours). Possible problem is the VDimm was too high or or MB chipset was defective.

Hope this helps.

spluff, the lower cpuz reading is typical for most of us. This board, like most, has a drop & vdroop issue where the delivered voltage is less than specified, esp. under load. At stock MHz this shouldn't be an issue. What's you RAM voltage though? If you've still got this at Auto then you wont be giving those XMS enough juice since this board delivers 1.8v at this setting. These dimms need 2.1v so change the memory voltage to +0.3v. You'll see a message in red saying something about voltages not optimized & PC Health Status will show FAIL instead of OK, but dont worry about these - its just Gigabyte being dramatic. Let us know how you get on.

I think he should be doing +.2v on the memory since this board looks like it overvolts. This should net him 2.13v. Fine for his Corsair memory.

Hello Sluff, do you have the 1.1 version of this board ? if so update your Bios to latest F4 so it recognises the G0 correctly, in the bios are all your voltages set to normal ? and are your temps correct using coretemp 0.95.4?.

if you have measured your temps using Speedfan then you need to add 15c to each core which puts you at low 70's, if this is the case reseat your heatsink because the one you have is a really good one and should be giving you better temps.

Okay tried upping my memory voltate to +0.2 and it failed after 80minutes again.

I have now decided to do the following:-

I have updated the bios to F4 (seemed to go okay)
Reset to optimal settings
Changed the memory voltage to +0.3
Changed memory settings to 4 4 4 12
Changed cpu voltage to 1.3
Changed cpu/ram ratio to 2
C1E TM2 and EIST disabled
Changed bus speed to 300

So now my CPU is at 2700......

How does this sound?

I am currently running PRIME95 again (been running 15mins) - will post what happens.......

Thanks!!!!!!!!!

Same as me. Or are those the 5-5-5-18 modules? Told you they needed +0.3v Whether the board over-volts the memory or the sensor/software is just gash is up for debate. Until someone sticks a multi meter on it & proves it one way or t'other, I'll go with the BIOS. Makes no odds for me anyway as using any less just aint stable. I'm not fussed anyhow as 2.26v (speedfan/Everest) is hardly going to frazzle them.

Ok, I have a problem and I don't know if it is the motherboard or something else. I have been trying to OC, but if I change the CPU Host Clock Control to enabled so that I can OC, the motherboard just resets after I see the Gigabyte splash screen even if I don't change any other settings.
I have tried turning off C1E, TM2, and EIST.
The system boots up just fine if I don't change that setting.

My system is:
Intel 6550 w/ Intel Heatsink
GA P35C rev1.1 F4 Bios
EVGA 8800GTS 320MB
Corsair XMS2 2GB 5-5-5-12
Antec truepower trio 550

I used to have a OCZ Platinum Rev2 memory and the same thing happened.
Also, the system also reboots if I change the PCI Express Bus speed to anything else than auto.

2.13v or 2.26v... whatever it takes!

Okay, that and the other post explains it. The drives you had connected to the adapters must operate in IDE mode, not AHCI. By moving them to the Gigabyte (purple) ports, they're on a different controller which has its own setting for IDE or AHCI. You could still install Windows in AHCI mode as long as you keep the "real" SATA drives on the Intel controller and the PATA drives on the Gigabyte controller (or vice-versa), as long as the settings are correct.

Hey folks, nice thread. I have the DS3R and I think I have a problem. My North bridge and memory are un-touchable. As in. If you touch them with your finger, you cant keep it on there for very long at all. My NB is running at 63c right now and the heatsink is Very hot to the touch. The memory is fine I think, All memory runs hot, but DAMM, this runs very hot, Crucial Ballistix Tracers PC800. Is there a solution to my NB being so hot? My CPU temps are very cool. I run a Q6600 at 3.1 and it runs idle at 35c and Load at 54c with a Ninja Scythe.

Any suggestions?

thanks for everyones help so far

well this morning it was still okay (9 hours) So I am going to leave it whilst at work which will be another 10 hours........ If it is still green I guess its working fine now with the increase voltage........

Its running at 2.7 at 3v (in bios) with mem at +0.3

Will leave it a few days doing some memtests and more checks then will try and overclock a little bit more to maybe 3.0
