after running the computer (idle) for about 45 minutes, CPU temperature is about 23-26C, which is fine, but the System temperature goes about to 52C, which I'm sure isn't normal, I also opened up the case's left door so it'll get some more Air from the outside, and still, the temperatures are fly high.
Can it be something else? like something I can tell from the bios? memories timing? I'm not really an hardware expert so I can't really tell...

I had a similar problem when I first built my pc with my system temp at 50C. I moved some fans around to improve airflow and added a 40mm fan to the NB heatsink and now I'm at 37C. There's a lot of debate about where the mobo sensor is actually located & even if it isnt inside the chipset, it must be very close for the extra cooling to have an effect. I get a 5C drop in temp with the 40mm fan running on a 12v-7v converter cable. My case fans are now 2x80mm fans at the front and 1x80mm at the rear with the 2 front fans running half speed. Previously I had 2x80mm fans at full speed blowing from the side & my temps were worse! I have also re-seated the NB heatsink with AS5 as the GB supplied stuff was just kak.

Hey thanks for the answer Stevo, I was thinking of buying an extra 120 fan to improve airflow in the case because the stock fans (2 rear 120mm fans and 1 at the front, also 120mm) are pretty lazy (1000 rpm max) but I wanted to be sure that the heat doesnt have to do with me assembling all the hardware in the wrong way, or whether something I can fix up through the bios, any idea about that?

There's no quick wins in the BIOS I'm afraid. I'd be surprised if 3 x 120mm fans at 1000rpm aren't doing a good enough job. 50C is high but I don't think it's dangerous for the p35 chipset. Try a fan on the NB if you're worried.

Save & reboot & press CTRL-G & follow the setup process to set up your desired array. Save & reboot to Windows. Install the Gigabyte SATA driver.

Thanks 5t3v0. Might try that.
I took an image of the primary drive with Acronis, so i can reinstall then dump the image over the top.
Would you reccomend using AHCI?

When you say you system temp is 52C, are you talking CPU temp or Case temp? What program are you using to get this temp. Use speedfan and tell us what you are getting.
If you are talking about your CPU temp you are fine. Almost like mine

my temps are @ 3.6OC
Northbridge 47C (40C non stressed) (using digital thermometer)
Case 43C
CPU 51C
HD0 28C
Core 0 57C
Core 1 57C
GPU 56C

Hey guys, again, thanks for the replies! Stevo, can this by any chance can be an issue of connecting hardware to the motherboard in a bad way? Where can I locate the Northbridge on the Mobo?

And mrfatboy: my CPU is just fine non-stressed (23-25c) but my Case Temp/System Temp is sky high - about 50-52c _non stressed_ that is...
I've been checking the temps through BIOS and Everest ... same results...

"kinda hot" doesn't help me. I need to know your ambient temp? Also use speedfan so we know exactly what temps you are talking about.

You mean install a fresh copy of Vista on the RAID & then overwrite with your image? Not sure that will work. Was the image created under a RAID setup & has the drivers installed? Also if your imaged Windows partition was installed under IDE you wont be able to convert it to AHCI. Windows just wont start afterwards. You could try making the registry change described in the link posted by Conjugal Visit before you take the image but that was for XP & you have Vista so no guarantees it will work.

AHCI - I've browsed links that seem to suggest this is totally unnecessary for desktop computers? Meaning, no performance gains. Meant more for enterprise level stuff? I sure could be mistaken, but that's my impression. Like JMAC, I was all about maximizing my rig, etc, and also like JMAC, had already installed my O/S (XP Pro SP2 32bit) when I "discovered" the AHCI option. Seeing as the whole thing looks dicey to implement AFTER the O/S install (meaning I needed to reformat and reinstall the O/S with that F6 switch) I decided to leave well enough alone and run in IDE.

Am I missing something re: the desirability of AHCI? JMAC's running Raid, I'm not. Is that the key here?

Regards,

That's my understanding too. Once on IDE (which I have done too) the performance benefits are too small to justify the effort & risk in converting. You can still have RAID on IDE which is worth it. However, if you wanted to make your boot drive RAID after installing on a single disk, I think you'd have to re-install. Adding a non-bootable RAID can be done after install I'm sure which was what I was trying to explain to jmac although perhaps not very well. I have a RAID setup for my games partition, but I still loaded the install drivers when installing Vista although this step was perhaps unnecessary. I think just installing the Windows drivers would have been enough.

funny you say that Conjugal Visit (it hasnt all worked out to plan so far LOL), I managed to get it all going using Acronis to move the partition after setting up raid. Then recreated the boot sector by doing a auto repair with the vista CD and loaded my drivers from the gigabyte cd.
all worked fine, good transfer rates, nearly 50mbps.
HOWEVER.. at random times the disks slow to nearly a stand still.. this is really annoying! (i can go back because i disconnected the disk i imaged from before hand so i can just delete the raid set up and still have my info) but i would really like it to work normally!
to troubleshoot i deleted the partition and started again with the vista cd (clean install) worked fine for about a day then went back to EXTREMELY slow (wait 1 minute for command to carry out eg. click start, wait 60 sec) - though it doesnt ALWAYS do this.

this is strange!! HELP! LOL

Okay, can someone please answer the question: Which is better the 2 gigabyte sata ports for raid 0 or the intel sata ports?

I dont think it makes a difference. I used the Gig ones (only using two drives) so that the SATA Cdrom and my other drives can sit on the other ports

I have been having a problem with my setup based around a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R. I am running dual monitors using the dual DVI out on an EVGA 7950 GT and when the PC boots, only one of the monitors turns on. In order for the monitor to show my windows desktop, I have to turn the monitor off and then turn it back on again. Is this a mb problem? I have updated my BIOS as well as the driver on the video card and these have not fixed the problem. Anyone ever experienced these in their machine?

sounds like more of a video card/monitor problem. The 2nd monitor is not being recognized by the vid card. Are they both the same type of monitor? Do you have the correct drivers for each of the monitors?

What are the best sata port configuration to run 2 sata optical drives and 4 sata hard drives? They are numbered but nowhere are instructions as to what order/method the ports should be populated. There are 6 orange ones and the 2 purple ones.... Is there an optimal setup for this?

@Hammerman - optimal? I've never read a thread that's ever explored that at all on any motherboard. I couldn't say. I chose to use the orange - Intel. Nothing against the purple - giga. I just thought I'd use the orange for anything internal to the rig, and if I ever went with E-Sata externals, I'd plug the bracket into the purple. I've always just followed my own internal logic, and plugged the boot drive into 0, secondary backup drive into 1, etc...

I'll chime in too - that's not your motherboard, that's your vid card setup, I think.

yep. same monitor-a pair of dell 20" LCDs. i haven't tried removing and reseating the card yet but i have tried reinstalling the drivers and the problem remains. i will report back when i try reseating and removing the drivers. i ran the card on an Asus P5W-DH with no video problem so it might just need a bit of adjustment. thx.

This board has been around a while, so how stable is it for stock use? I've been reading horror stories about every p35 based motherboard on various forums. Looking for something reliable & stable. By reliable & stable I mean that it will boot every time (at least post); the sata controllers won't die in 6 months (either partially [io errors reported by the os] or completely [no detection in bios or by os, etc]).

well i started getting more fails, blue screens etc...... so tested with both memory again and it failed several times in Prime95 on different tests.......

UPDATE:

I have completed tests with both sticks of memory 1 at a time:-

Everything set at stock (slack timings):-
memory @ 5 5 5 18 @ 2.1V

STICK1 (PASSED)
---------
Memtest (2 runs - 40mins runtime) - PASS
Memtest (Test no5 - 1 Hour runtime) - PASS
Prime95 (In-place test 18hrs runtine) - PASS
Prime95 (Blend test 90mins runtime) - PASS
Prime95 (Small test 60mins runtime) - PASS
Company of Heroes (1st mission) - PASS

STICK2 - FAIL
--------
Memtest (Test no5 - 1 Hour runtime) - PASS
Prime95 (Small test 60mins runtime) - FAIL (Blue screened at 65mins)
Prime95 (Small test 6 hours) - PASS
Prime95 (Inplace test 4 mins) - FAIL (all 4 cores failed @ 4min 4min 3min 8min)
Prime95 (Inplace test 1 mins) - FAIL
Prime95 (Inplace test 2 mins) - FAIL

As you can see memory stick 2 failed a few times in Prime95 and blue screened once. It did pass memtest for 1 hour.

I dont like how stick 2 passed memtest again - but it failing in Prime must mean something....

Whatya think?

Thanks
