Remember previously I did run memtest86+ for 8 or so hours and there were no errors.

Could I be barking up the wrong tree, it seems that everytime it reboots is on disk IO. It will run off a live CD and hasn't rebooted from that...

set ram multiplier 3.0 and that gives you your stock ram speed. i have to say that i find that voltage at +.3 mighty low...usually these boards overdoit. odd...if you think it's an i/o error with the HD then try another but if possible i would look at exchanging the board where you bought it. or even RMA'ing it. those voltages are way too low for +0.3. have you tried different set of ram sticks? one at a time?

Ok, question (probably wrong place to ask this), if I am going to take this back and exchange, is this still the board to get? Like I said, I do not need a gaming board, just a workstation type settup. It is replacing a old IBM Intellistation Z Pro that was a dual Xeon 3.2 dual core with a scsi subsystem, Quadro video card, and 8 gigs of ram, mainly used to build vmware demos.
So, my next step is to put the memory and hard drive in the machine that works and see what happens. If it all works then I think that the motherboard will go back to the store...
yep. if it works ok on your other motherboard then this board is bad. a p35-ds3l would do what you need it to do for less money, lol. i got this board because of the ddr 3 and the bigger headsink on the chipset. let me know how it turns out. all the gigabyte p35c boards are very similar and the p35-ds3l is the value priced one. p35-ds3r is next one up...

Actually this board was rather cheap $139 here in Houston, TX this week. I didn't see the ds3l at the local store, but TomsHardware.com seemed to like the DS3R. And I assumed that th 680i boards were more of a gaming platform, and overclocker -- but this one seems to have a lot of that functionality...

Good catch on the motherboard! All seems to be running fine on the 680i motherboard. I didn't move the CPU, but the memory, hard drive, and graphics card.
Chris

P.S. - Thanks for all the help!

This board has been getting an unusually high number of negative reviews on newegg...

Ok, another stupid question - new board, all seems to be working @F4 BIOS, flash to F8 or not? And maybe now could you tell what your SATA controllers are set for? I left them at defaults.

Don't flash F8 yet. get your board stable with known bios. Set your SATA to IDE. install your windows. Slow and steady wins the race.

if it ain't broke don't fix it LOL. F8 bios works great for me. f4 bios is more than i came with when i bought my p35c. i never changed the SATA setting so whatever default is that's what i have set. did you get another p35c? how are the vdimm voltages now? get f8 bios just so you can see current info. it's a new board and things are working. get updated bios, gigabyte tweaks their bioses but does a poor job of telling users all the details...but can't be bad as far as i can tell.

f6 bios or later will let you see voltages in bios. i've tried them all...very little superficial changes. and added support for different things and redid the dll high speed ram setting thing. it's up to you really. worst comes to worst you can always flash back to f4

Yes, I just got another GA-P35C-DS3R, the store didn't have much more selection that I considered. With the F4 BIOS it doesn't tell the actual voltage, it just says OK (unless I am missing the command to see? CTL+F1?) It has been running since yesterday afternoon, so i'll let it run for a few days then update the BIOS...

Again, thanks for all the help! I have never had a bad Gigabyte board before and I was really concerned about swapping out for the same board - after reading all the complaints at newegg.com.

cool, no problem dude. f8 bios will show you the voltages instead of OK or FAIL. and also does away with the control f1 business.

hey wassup. i got a problem with this board

rev 1 p35 ds3r
e6400
ocz plat ddr2 800
ultra 500 psu
8800gt
2x seagate 320 seta raid 0

sometimes the system wont boot up, it will try but wont post, some times needing to manually reboot and it will post wiht default settings... sometimes i can get it to work , usually got my e6400 oced to 3.6 450 fsb memory at 1:1. *it ran perfect at that speed on my p965 s3* so i dont thnk its any hardware problems..

any idea? right now im on F9 bios, but i tried f4 , and f5 since i read they where more stable.. maybe i should go back to f4? i dont recall how that performed becuase i think i had it booting up and thought "hey it boots up, maybe i should try another bios"

this is fustrating, could it be my board is bad?? if at worse i could jus throw my S3 back into my system

ok dude, does it work ok stock? you said you have it overclocked to 3.6 ghz and your memory to 900mhz. it ran perfect on a different board? big deal. you're overclocking man...and the board changes everything. try stock speeds, if that works then slowly work your way up overclocking. you may have lost something by switching boards.

btw, this thread is for p35c-ds3r

All, I upgraded to F8 from F4, i am running Vista ultimate and my system reboots after every few (say 10-15 mins). I went back to F4 and then did step by step F6 but F6 turned out unstable as hell. then tried F7.... same result as F8 (reboot every 10-12 mins). any suggestions?

to me it sounds like your ram voltage may not be set correctly.
load optimized default, save, reboot, eneter bios again and set +0.3 on ram. save and reboot. then check in bios...should show about 2.26 volts on ram voltage in system health. see if that works. +0.2 gives 2.1. check your ram specs and leave timings on auto to rule that out as the problem.

So, I noticed the same thing going from F4 to F8 (with failsafe defaults), but went to F6 and it seems to be better. The DRAM Voltage is 1.842. Only thing i changed from defaults was the SATA Port0-3 Native Mode Enabled (default was disabled)

fausto412:

this is what I did:
As I mentioned on my previous post I was back on F4. From F4 I upgraded to F6, did Load-optimize defaults, save, reboot and then went to M.I.T and verified timing set to Auto and also changed the DDR2/3 voltage setting to +0.3, save, reboot, that ran ok for about 15 mins (i tried all kinds of apps but no games though) and i upgraded to F7 (i could have done F8 directly but wanted to eliminate any possibilities) did same thing with F7 (optimize default and then voltage to +0.3) reboot but it crapped out again in 5 mins so went back to bios and changed voltage to +0.2, reboot and it crapped out again. then i took a risk of upgrading bios to F8 (because as I mentioned it could have rebooted itself in the middle of bios flash but fortunately it didn't) and with F8 i tried same thing again - load optimize default, save, reboot, change ddr2/3 voltage to +0.3 booted up the OS but this time it stayed up for good 20-25 mins and crapped out. So i changed the voltage to +0.2 rebooted OS and this time it rebooted automatically after 10-15 mins of very light use so I got sick of it, rebooted and went to back to good ol F4. what do you think i should try now?

Can anybody explain to me why I should even update from F4g bios? The only benefit I see is for Penryn compatibilty. Everything else seems like a big problem like fan, speedstep, vdimm voltage.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for experimenting and exploring what this board can do. Heck. That's why I started this thread.

Am I missing something?

So what appears to be the stable version that will support the yorkfield? Not that I am planning on updating to a penryn CPU on this system. I am forward-thinking on updating my main system to new guts (mobo, cpu, memory (may take 2 GB 1066 out and put into the new one to save a few bucks), SATA HD/SATA Optical, video card (8800GT probably) and PSU (600W approx.)) vs trying to offload this to someone cheap.

i don't think your problems are with the bios software but with a setting not being set correctly. are you overclocking? what's the specs of your ram? cpu?
if ram is too agressively timed or overclocked and cpu undervolted for the speed you have it set at that can cause sudden reboots.

if not overclocking, try setting the timings on your ram to 5-5-5-15 and the rest on auto. make sure the ram multiplier is the one that results in 800 mhz being the speed.
make sure if your cpu is e6000 series that the voltage is set to 1.325 which is stock. ram voltage no more than 2.26 in bios...the least you can get away with. overheating the sticks can cause problems. don't know how good your airflow is. check your bios for the actual voltages if on f7+ bios. post back what results you get.

ps. you can also try reseating your ram in the slots.

well, i can see the voltages in the new bios, and i can tell you that none of the bios have given me problems. i know gigabyte does more than advertised on each update. i try them out because i believe usually things are for the better.
but you don't have to upgrade unless you want to or need to.
i mean fan works fine and speedstep works fine except for overclocking but then who overclocks and uses speed step and c1 state. all my fans work great. my antec trio i have on my scythe ninja starts up at 800 to 1200 rpm depending on room temp, and when i play it reaches 1800 rpm. makes noise when it doesn't bother me.

Hi folks, new to the forum here. I think I've finally found a place that can answer my questions. I want to build a new computer and here is what I want to put in it:

Intel® Core?2 Quad Q6600, 2.40-GHz @ 1066Mhz w/ 8Mb Quad Core (Socket 775) w/ Heat Sink & Fan,

Gigabyte GA-P35C-DSR3 LGA775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard,

OCZ 4Gb PC2-6400 DDR2 Dual Channel Reaper CL4 HPC Edition (OCZ2RPR800C44GK) (2 x for 8Gb Total),

EVGA GeForce 8800 GT KO Video Card - KO Edition, 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, Video Card,

6 x 80GB HDD in RAID5,

SoundBlaster® X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty? Professional Series,

Logitec 3000 Wireless keyboard & mouse

My biggest concern is with memory compatibilty! Does this combination work? Or will I be limited to 4Gb only? I really want to run 8GB!

What inherent problems are there with the rest of the machine and can they be overcome? OCZ won't even give me a straight answer on the memory. They said they haven't tested 8 GB on the board yet, but I read here some are doing it (I think?).

Any questions or advice are more than welcome.

I found a sale on the RAM for $114 CDN/kit until tomorrow. Need to decide today.

Thanks in advance.

You are looking to put 8Gb of memory into the system? If you are running Vista I'd say go for it if you're wanting to blow the money for that much memory. If you aren't doing Video work/graphics it's sort of a waste of cash. 4Gb should be fine otherwise. As for 6x80Gb HD's? Why? 500Gb SATA's are most likely cheaper than them unless you get them on sale. ~$100 apiece. You'd just get two for RAID 1 or 3 for RAID 5. Why you want RAID 5 I don't know as you don't state it. RAID 1 for data integrity, RAID 0 for performance. RAID 5 is fine if you want to be able to replace a drive and keep the system up due to parity but I don't know performance-wise how much better/faster that is than RAID 1. More info on the OS you'll be running and what you'll be using it for may help folks give you some feedback. Also this thread is about overclocking, not system builds.

Okay, here's some more info on me and how I want to use this machine.

I am a High School IT Teacher and I teach everthing from Off2k7 Apps to CAD, Web Design to Hardware, Programming to Digital Audio, and Digital Graphics. This rig is to be primarily a work machine.

My hobby is Digital Graphics using software like Photoshop CS3, Poser 7 and Vue 6 Inf. to create very high res images that look like they were "rendered" on some high end Canon camera. These images can take double-digit hours to render depending on lighting modes and shadows and sheer volume of polygons in the image. For rendering images such as these render times are more dependant on CPU speeds and amount of RAM than a fast graphics card. This is the second intended use for the machine.

Thirdly, games.

Why the RAID5? When you work with as many apps (probably 40+) as I do, I have just come to hate having to reinstall all those apps and their updates just because I lose some sector on a HDD that contained some Uber critical OS file or part of the master boot record. I back up my work regularly, I just have had enough of reinstalling apps.

I also want to run Dual boot either Vista or WinXPProx64, and WinXPPro SP2 as the other OS.

Why 6x80GB HDD? I already have 3 of them running RAID5 on Win Server2K, want to add 3 more. Can buy them through work supplier for $50 each. I hope to have 3 drives dedicated to each OS and their programs.

I understand this thread is for overclocking, I plan on running the CPU et al. at 3.0 maybe even 3.2 GHz if it's stable enough. I just need to know if the components will work together first, and if the memory is a good choice for intended use?

Need to know anything else? Glad to answer your questions. Looking forward to reading responses.

Has anyone had sound issues with this board? I have searched high and low and can't seem to find much info other than issues with the Realtek HD Drivers or the MSFT UAA driver. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both and I am still experiencing some crackling/hiss through the speakers. I installed a SB Audigy 2 to see if that would fix the problem and I am still experiencing the same issue. Any ideas?

if it's what i think it is, i experience that too, but i also experienced it on every system i hooked up to my speakers...never happened with headphones and we talking 3 different sound cards. the problem is the speakers accepting interference...happens momentarily and randomly in my case or when my cell phone rings near my speakers. it also happens whenever i use x-fi mode in battlefield 2142 but that one i know 100% it's the game. the other times it's just interference. if this is what you experience then quit looking for a solution, not that big a deal to me but i also know there is no solution...better quality speakers???

No, I've only experienced it with this PC.
