jasonja: Thanks for the info on that seller. It sounds like a really good place to get mattress pads from. I checked out his site and it looks like he sells the Pink Foam Pillow that sells at "As Seen On TV" Stores for $19.99. I tried that pillow out and it was a low density pillow...too marshmellow like for my tastes.

Your story sounds great though. There's nothing like *free.*

Also, I contacted the seller of the Cryo-Thermic Pillow and he did tell me that he is completely sold out and unfortunately can't get any more.

First off...

IAccord99I: I must have been bidding against you for some of those pillows!! whoo hoo!

Second,

I bought a pillow from BBB 4" Standard contour...I'm 6'1" about 200 (my license says 195...it's a feel good weight..really!!) Anyways, the store didn't have the 4 1/2" or 5 inchers...so I got the 4", sure, I was there in need of pillows and why I was there and decided to splurge...and didn't read Atrac's thread...yet. I fell in love. My head melted into the pillow..just wasn't as much support for my neck as I wanted...as the 4 1/2" is prescribed for a person of my girth. Then I see Atrac's post...and got buyer's remorse not even 2 days after buying my pillow...wanting only a Tempur-pedic...took that one back...(as I also overpaid (BAD BAD), according to the thread), So, being the true AT'er, I took it back..and proceeded to act like a vulture and circle the unsaid auction site...Took a few weeks, and had a feel for what I "should" pay for the pillow...kept getting higher and higher..(Yes, Atrac, AT'ers HAD to be hiking the prices...I was one for sure...IAccord99I was another).

In short, I've upgraded to a Queen "XL" 5-incher (which is the highest point of the first 'contour', for whomever asked). Still in the process of being sent and supposed to come with a pillow case as well....so for $38...plus shipping ($8), I shall once against sleep the 'sinking' sleep. I actually have 3 of them coming!! Dad/Bro's b-day this month (and mine)...so hopefully they'll enjoy them as much as I have....and will soon again.

When I get the 5-incher and try it out...I will comment on the thicker contour...I actually would have preferred a 4 1/2", so hope it isn't too much for my bulbous head stretching out the sweaters!! Costanza!!!

-dg

Thank you, Atrac....a convert here...and fellow "PoP", Preacher of the Pillow!! My friends are jealous!!!

jasonja--Very neat story. Way to barter your services.

Would you let us know how you like the mattress pad, after you've used it a few nights?

I'm gonna get something. I'd really like to get the mattress that Brookstone sells (is it Tempurpedic Atrac?), but no way I'm gonna pay that kinda $$'s. I imagine I can find a pad that provide almost the same level of comfort.

Thanks Randy... well I slept on the pad last night. It was nice... my girlfriend loved it. I think I have a freaky spine or a big ass because my lower spine normally never touches a mattress and I usually wake up with a sore back. I'm happy to say that last night that wasn't the case. This pad isn't quite as dense as the Tempur ones.... it's 4lb density vs. 5.3lb of the Tempur. But when you consider that your mattress is under it, you really don't need the denser foam since you're mainly using it for comfort and not support. I also found that I didn't need two pillows like normal, my body sank into the foam so my head was up higher than normal, so one pillow was more than enough. This was great because one pillow isn't normally enough but two is usually too much... so I have one thick pillow and one thin one to solve the problem.

I would gladly have paid $140 for this pad, I almost wanted to ask Mark what is markup on these things were, I know he's making a killing... he showed me his modest warehouse that was devoted to Ebay... pretty insane demand for these things, he said he turned a power seller in weeks.

As stated previously I ordered the following from Camping World:

4 - Visco-elastic pillows...........I had already purchased two of them, and you can find my comments in a previous post.
1 - Visco-elastic 1 1/2" mattress pad.
1 - Some-sort-of-foam hypoallergenic mattress topper.

I just received the tracking number, and the shipment is scheduled to be delivered to me tomorrow 7/10. I will unpack the order and post my initial feelings regarding the quality, etc. soon thereafter. I will also post my feelings after sleeping on them for a night or two or three!

My order arrived form camping world today. I ordered 2 pillows and the mattress pad from camping world.
The pad is somewhat of a dissapointment. The pad is visco-elastic foam. But no matter how i measure it , it is only 1 1/10 inch thick at most. I think the average thickness would only be slightly more than 5/6 inch. IT IS NOT THE 1 1/2 INCH DESCRIBED! It is VERY thin and even doubled up , still amounts to little. It is made by the carpenter company, so what little you do get is decent quality. It would take 4 of these to probably equal as much foam as a 3 inch 4 lb density pad. So the pad is not that hot of deal.

The 2 pillows are also made by the carpenter company of the same material.
Takes both to weight about the same as the sam's club sleep innovations one and they feel less dense.
The foam springs back much slower, but does not feel as soft as the high density sam's club sleep innovations one when I put the full weight of my head on it.

Edit: on carpenter's homepage they say the their foam is 1.15 pcf density and on qvc site the 3 1/2 foam pad is 1.4 density, what does pcf mean? The caprenter mattress pad feels soft, but it is simply not thick or dense enough support. I strongly advise against buying one if you are looking to solve any pressure point or pain problems, especailly if you sleep on the side.

Edit again: after sleep on the pillows off an on for a few hours, they are much better than the sam's club ones. Much softer and less pressure on the head. These pillows are hot deal for $17.

FWIW: I bought a queen-size Brookstone Tempur-Pedic contour XL (5") pillow and found it to be a bit too much for me. I'm 6', 200lbs., but I have a head like its no tomorrow and the pillow still felt a bit too large for me. It felt close, but not quite right. So after a month of trying to get 'used' to it, I bought what I found to be the perfect pillow. It's a queen-size Tempur-Pedic Millennium (4.5") pillow. The contour of the pillow, and the indentation in the middle for your head is absolutely perfect IMHO.

With all due respect to RadioactiveMagpies, I have a different opinion of the Thermolux Mattress Pad from Camping World.

I think the important thing to note when "comparing" mattress pads, pillows, or whatever - is the difference in the cost - making the point, however, that we should be comparing the same type of foam, i.e visco-elastic to visco-elastic etc..

As I have been emphasizing, you can buy two of the visco elastic foam pillows from Camping World for $30.98, put them one on top of the other, and I would defy anyone to say that they are not comparable in comfort etc. to any other single pillow mentioned in this thread. In fact two of these pillows put together is a little "much" for my personal tastes, so I use just one pillow placed on top of my old, sturdy Sobakawa pillow, and the combination of these two pillows is my definition of the "Perfect Pillow." Other people have mentioned having "heavy" heads so I think two of these pillows would probably suit them perfectly.......and the total cost would be $30.98....delivered to your door!!! I just dont think you can beat the deal............MHO, of course, and everyone is entitled to their own.

I just this morning received the Dreamshape Thermolux Mattress Pad, made by the Carpenter Company along with the Comfort Coil Antimicrobial Mattress Pad - also made by Carpenter. I knew what I was buying when I made the purchase..........the Thermolux Mattress Pad is made of visco-elastic memory foam, and the Comfort Coil Mattress Pad is made of some other type of foam. On the packaging it notes "urethane foam" but it also says that on the visco-elastic mattress pad. They are definitely different!!! The mattress pad foam seems to be like I would expect a high quality egg crate foam to be made of. This foam is not chinzy stuff, it comes with a 7 year warranty. Visco-elastic its not, but it is still a high quality, sturdy foam.

The Thermolux Mattress pad is, in fact, 1 1/2" thick. There is a wave design on the top of the pad to allow air circulation, but in order to measure it correctly, you must measure to the top of the "cut-out" wave section otherwise you would, as RadioactiveMagpies did, come up short. It is thin compared to others posted in this thread, but IMHO it is still a very good mattress pad. The antimicrobrial mattress pad is 1 1/2" thick on either end (bottom and top/head and foot) and 2" thick in the middle. If I never heard of visco-elastic memory foam, I would probably fall in love with this. Its a very nice mattress pad for the money.

When the Fedex truck arrived, I was still in bed sleeping so I ran to the door and tore open the mattress pad/cover boxes and immediately put them on my bed one by one. I happen to be a side sleeper and have two points on my hips (one on either side) that get irritated and sore which causes me to toss and turn. I could still feel those pressure points when I laid down the visco-elastic mattress pad. It was evident immediately that it helped relieve this discomfort. I am dying to try sleeping on this pad tonight to get a true idea if - all by itself - it will give me relieve from those sore spots. I will be shocked if it doesnt. Then I put down the other mattress pad, and laid on that all by itself. It too seemed to relieve the effect of the sore spots on my hip, but wasnt quite as comfy as the visco-elastic one. Then I put them one on top of the other with the visco-elastic pad on top.............and it was like I was floating on cloud nine. I could no longer feel the sore spots on my hips, or anything else for that matter.......it was as if I were suspended in mid-air.........it was truly amazing.

Since it was easy to surmise that the visco-elastic mattress pad at 1 1/2" was probably going to be a bit thin, this is exactly what I was hoping for when I purchased these two mattress pads............to put them one on top of the other and get this type of effect.....no more sore spots, and a nice buffer between me and all of those damn dust mites that are lurking in my mattress. The cost of these two mattress pads....delivered to my door......was $24.99 for the regular foam pad, $37.99 for the visco-elastic foam pad, and $1.99 shipping for a grand total of $64.97.............and, again in MHO...........I would defy anyone to try this setup and not agree that this is the best way to go if you want to get a good nights' sleep with no sore spots in the morning............for the money!!! Remember - that 2" visco-elastic mattress pad from QVC was about $200 shipped. Hell, for that money you could buy three of the visco-elastic pads, and three of the antimicrobrial mattress pads from Camping World and still have some cash left over. Or, you could even buy five - thats right........five! of the 1 1/2" visco-elastic pads from Camping World - and again you would still have money left over. Of course you might have to buy yourself a ladder in order to be able to get up and down from all of these stacked mattress pads!! But what a nights sleep that would be, eh??????

I can imagine that two of the visco-elastic mattress pads would be great putting one on top of the other, but I just wanted to purchase one of those antimicrobial pads because of the dust mites, and figured if putting these two together would work I would be happy. I also considered that maybe the two together wouldnt be enough, so I thought if they werent enough I would just buy additional ones and still be saving some of my hard-earned cash. Well, it turned out well for me........and no matter what anyone else decides to do regarding what or from whom they buy their pillows and mattress pads.........I hope you all end up with the desired result - no matter how much of your hard-earned money you spent.........or saved!!

Sweet dreams, everyone! I will try different combinations of these two mattress pads over the next few days and let everyone know which combo worked best for me. YMMV, but the idea of this thread is to keep each other informed on what works for whom so that we as individuals can make informed decsions on how to spend our hard-earned cash.

Atrac, you da man!!!...........I cannot believe this thread is still going, and going..........longer than the Energizer Bunny methinks!!!

I would have to agree that the foam mattress form Camping World is very comfortable and nice to sleep on.
I am planning on keeping mine and use it as a topper for a real memory(thicker) foam pad I am planning on buying.
This pad has low density 3 lb density(i suspect even less), and is really soft. You will have a better night's sleep for sure. Piling them up to form a thicker pad is not a viable option for me, becuase it is just too soft at 3 lb density. There is simply too much air and not enough foam feel.

On that famous online auction site, a 3 inch thick queen size,4 lb density pad is about $140(+25 shipping) with a free 6 inch pillow.
If someone has something similar to this, and is a side sleeper(160 lbs), can you tell me if it is enough for the should to fall into the foam and not get sore?

Radio:

The 4lb density 3" is what I got from Mark's 1/2 price bedding (he's on Ebay and I think he's the one you're refering to). See my previous posts for the full story on the seller and the product.

I'm 6'4" and 200lbs and when I lay down on this pad I no longer feel the mattress underneath... 3" is the ideal thickness and when laying on my side I don't have any pressure points. Mark also had the 1.5" Thermolux pad in his shop and I felt it and was immediately unimpressed, it's a glorified Egg crate and is only 1.5" thick at it's thickiest point, but at the valley it's only about 0.5" thick. Even stacking two would only give you about a 2" pad (1.5" peak + the 0.5" valley since you're not going to line up peak on peak). I'm sure if you buy enough of the Thermolux pads you could get a decent pad out of it, but if you're trying mimic a Tempur-pedic type bed then you're not going to really get it right since this stuff is not lower density.

If I am a person who always sleeps on my side, will I be better off with a normal-shaped pillow or one of those strange-shaped contour ones? I have been looking at the different types of tempur-pedic pillows.

I, too, am a side sleeper and have bought four of the visco-elastic foam pillows with the neck contour. I have no problem with the pillow as it conforms to my head when I lie on it...........so I dont really notice the contour at all.

Having said that, I would still recommend a flat, regularly shaped visco-elastic pillow for side sleepers. With the regular shape type of pillow, there would be no "low" end or "high" end...........it would be the same thickness throughout the pillow. I would guess this would be better, but I am definitely NOT sure just how much of a difference it would make. I think you would be satisfied with either of them.

I just spent my first night on the 1 1/2" visco-elastic Themolux Mattress Pad I bought from Camping World, and I couldnt be more satisfied.

My mattress is firm and I could still "feel" the firmness of the mattress through the pad......but, hey, its only 1 1/2" thick! Having said that, I had a very comfortable nights' sleep and did not develop any sore spots on my hips. I did much less tossing and turning. I am very satisfied with my purchase, but my evaluating isnt done yet folks.

Tonight, I am going to fold the mattress in half and see what happens when I sleep on the equivalent of a 3" visco-elastic foam mattress pad. I will let everyone know what up tomorrow!

C'mon guys...you're KILLING me with the mattress pads...I just dropped $120 on visco-tempur pillows....now I'm thinking I *need* a mattress to sleep like a king!!

Well, I'm off to Gap to get my boxers...perhaps I'll sleep in them and my pillows and bask in the glory that is "the deal".

I got a hold of the guy from Ebay with the Cryo-Thermic Pillows and he has one that some guy bid on and never came through on. I will be getting it in a few days. To bad he only had one but I am needy not greedy.
Who would ever believe so many guys would have a thread this long in a computer forum about pillows? Now I can get rid of that bag of buzzard feathers I have been sleeping on.

A twin size 4lb density 3 inch memory foam mattress is only about $120(95+25 shipping) with a free memory foam pillow, I was told by the seller that the foam is made my Foamex. Really cheaper than I thought. I just wish it was carpenter foam because I'm more farmilar with it now.

I just finished my second nights' sleep on the 1 1/2" visco-elastic memory foam pad from Camping World. I folded the pad in half so that I had, in effect, a 3" pad. No longer could I feel the firm mattress under the pad. I had a nice nights sleep and woke with no sore spots. Just for the record, I am 5'10" and weigh about 190 lbs.

I also purchased a 2" antimicrobial foam mattress pad (NOT visco-elastic), and I am going to use this pad together with the visco-elastic pad tonight. I did a preview of these two pads the day I got them, but havent actually slept with this combo yet. I will let everyone know what I think about this combo tomorrow. My initial response was feeling as if I were suspended in air...........just fantastic!

As it stands now, if I had not bought the antimicrobial pad, and knew nothing about it, I would probably order a second visco-elastic pad and use them one on top of the other. The total cost for the two pads with shipping would be just about $78. A far cry from some of the other pads........for the money - and would probably more-than-satisfy most buyers looking for a nice visco-elastic mattress pad.

Having said all of this, it will probably turn out that I like one visco-elastic pad, and one antimicrobial mattress pad together. For even less money, about $65 delivered for both.

Stay tunred if you aint bored yet!!!

I ordered the $14.95 Thermolux pillows from Campground. They rrived in only 3 days. Good service.

I've been using the pillows for seat cushions. Not bad but could be better.

I sprung for the Tempur Pedic 4 !/2 in contour pillow from Bubba on ebay for about $50 + shipping. It's pretty good.
