Speaking of oder, the pillow at costco did have a oder for the first night till we took off the cover to air out. The box does not say anything about NASA, but it still works great in my opion.

I wish I had a Costco membership so I could test out that pillow. It does refer to NASA in it's description on the Costco website here: NovaForm Contour Visco Elastic Foam Pillow

$26.99 sounds pretty good. It even says "Extra high density temperature sensitive foam." I'm not sure how their definition of high density compares, but it looks like it has a nice form fitting terry cloth cover, and hey, if it smells, it can't be all that bad!

My sister just gave me one of the Novaform pillows. I didn't even know it was a "memory foam" pillow.
Should have read the box. Thanks for the info. By the way, the pillow seems to be nice. Time will tell.

I noticed that The Sharper Image has a Smart Foam pillow on their site:

Heat Sensitive Foam Neck Support Pillow (Long Name...it better be good!)

It's $49.95. There's a 10% off coupon for Sharper Image floating around, as well as a $10.00 off $50.00 coupon. A simple search on yahoo for "Sharper Image Coupon" should get you right to them.

I am not conveniently located near a Sharper Image to verify the density of this pillow, so I can't say if it is Tempur-Pedic or a close cousin. If anyone knows, let us know! But if they're competing against Brookstone (as they should be), it may be an excellent pillow.

The pillow I got off of eBay was a better deal though. That's all I'll say since we're understandably not allowed to promote auctions or sales in this forum.

If you're into the Low Density Smart Foam Pillow, the Strouds Outlet Stores currently have a Low Density Smart Foam pillow (by Eggcrate, even though it's not the Eggcrate Style) for $19.99.

just as a headsup, you can find the "expensive" tempur-pedic pillows on ebay for less than half of retail. I picked up the queen-size, 4" thick one for about $55 shipped

How are these things in regards to heat? Will they keep your head cool or do they hold a lot of heat?

I've found that the warmer it gets, the softer it gets. So your head really molds within the pillow once it gets warmer. I hate sleeping hot or warm and have found my Tempur Pedic Pillow to be terrific.

And yes, some of the best deals for these pillows can be had on eBay. If you look for key words like Tempur Pedic or find a pillow that is 5lb density, it's probably ok to get it. Of course eBay feedback can be very useful as well.

But seriously, thank you very much for all the info. Good job!
Just printed the Linens-n-Things coupon, will probably "settle" for the perfect pillow.

Both of the pillows that clarkmo posted at Sam's Club look interesting.

The Personal Profile Pillow can be found at the Boyd Website here:

Boyd Personal Profile Pillow

The only thing that sets off a flag for me is it says "Constructed from a material 5 times denser than regular foam, the Personal Profile Pillow forms a mold that supports your head and neck in perfect alignment with your spine." It seems like they are using the number "5" in a confusing way. Since we know that 5lb density is what to shoot for, why not just say "Constructed from 5lb density memory foam" instead "5 times denser?" Still, it's worth checking out.

The TempSoma pillow doesn't have a website of its own. But from the looks of it, it's a memory foam layer stretched over regular foam. That usually means it's going to be very very firm and in my opinion not very comfortable. Even the Boyd website says "The Personal Profile Pillow is made of solid 100% high density Memory Foam. Other pillows may use only a small layer of low density Memory Foam augmented by polyurethane foam." In that aspect Boyd definately knows what its talking about.

There are soooo many Memory Foam pillows out there.....I had no idea. As always, *feel* the pillow (if you can) before you buy it. If you order it online, make sure the company/eBay seller has a good return policy. You really don't want to take risks with something that you'll be using for 5-10 hours a day...especially when your neck and head are involved. Sleeping on a bad pillow will ruin your entire day!

Me...obsessed? I think a shrink is definately in order...but only if there's a Tempur Pedic pillow on the couch!

The Perfect Pillow at Linens N Things is a really good deal, especially if the contoured pillows are annoying to you. It's basically a regular shaped pillow made of Isotonic material (by the Carpenter Company). And in my opinion Isotonic is a close second to Tempur Pedic. Keep in mind that it's a big seller for LNT so you may want to call and make sure they have it before you make the trip (especially if it is far). And that one really has an odor...but it will air out after a few days so it should be fine.

how do these compare with the sobakawa pillows (with buckwheat husks)? or are we talking apples and oranges?

Not exactly. More like apples to thumbtacks. One is not edible whilst the other could perhaps make a good fiber breakfast.

drewdogg808 - I have both, and I choose the husk over the foam by far, simply because you can form the husk ones to the exact height you want.

Yay, I just got a 5" thick Tempur-Pedic pillow of ebay (the regular pillow shaped one) for $50! Thanks Atrac!

One question: do these pillows need a pillowcase over the cover that they come with?

I have a big sobakowa (husk) pillow. Initially I liked it, but as the novelty wore off, it's actually become one of my least favorite pillows. Seems to get rather warm compared to other, ordinary pillows. Most nights I end up using it to cover my head because it does a much better job of drowning out the racket of my early-riser kids in the morning as I desparately try to cling to those last few precious moments of REM sleep...

Good job! I've been downplaying eBay because of forum rules, but honestly, it's the best place to get them. In terms of a cover, I just use it exactly how it came. Tempur-Pedic has it's own liner within that cover, so I figure that it's good enough. It definately feels nice and who wants to cover up that Logo stitched across the fabric? It's all about Logos anyway, right? hah hah

I don't really notice alot of difference between a regular pillow and the $30 foam one I brought from sam's.

Honestly, that probably means it's a low density pillow. I'd recommend you take it back or go to Brookstone or Bed Bath & Beyond and feel the $99.00 Tempur-Pedic one. If you can tell a difference and think you'd like it, take back the Sam's one and get a Tempur Pedic off of eBay. Either way, I think you should take the pillow back. If you're not impressed, then that's $30.00 you need back.

In terms of the Sobokawa Pillow, I used one (actually went through 2) for about 4 years before getting into the Tempur-Pedic one. Before I discovered Tempur I would have sworn by those little wheat husks. It's definately my second favorite pillow. My cats get to use them now.

I don't have any experience with the other brands, but I dropped the dollars on the novatech from costco. And I can say, it's friggin amazing for me. Ever had one of those sinking into sleep feelings? this sure gives it to me. First off though, wash the cover and rip off the tag, I used it without washing it first, and it smelled and was not HALF as comfortable. But now this thing is a dream. It may not live up to the other Uber 100$ pillow standards, but for me I am VERY impressed. At first it was a bit wierd, but man with a long pillow inbetween the legs it's a dream come true (no pun intended). Plus for 26 bones how can you go wrong?

It's high density both from feel and what it says from the box. A good pillow. I have no experience with the others, but I havn't slept as good as I have with this in a very long time.

The Perfect Pillow that I have been referring to at Linens N Things has finally shown up on their website.

The Perfect Pillow by Carpenter Company

Just thought I'd add this link since I've mentioned it several times.

While I'm at it, here's the Homedics one as well:

Homedics Smart Foam Pillow

If you go get it don't forget the printable coupon available on the net for 20% off. It's good through June 30th.

Just got back from Linens N Things. They had 6 in boxes and 1 on display. Bought it with printed out 20% off coupon for 43.09 I believe. I am in Southern Cali (SB specifically). The size is a bit smaller than a standard pillow because I didnt have to struggle at all to put it in my pillowcase. It's also thinner I think than normal pillows. I can tell the difference between it and the one at Brookstone but at least I paid only 1/2.

I guess my question is how do these things make your sleep different? I sleep soundly usually. I toss and turn and wake up ocassionally but I have always thought that everyone does that, am I wrong? I just need to be convinced that I need one before I go drop the cash on one. BTW, I can't find a LNT coupon anywhere.
