The Usuall Holy war 6990 vs 590

Personally I am not a fan of either one anufacturer, i like them both for their particular strengths and weaknesses. I own 2x6990s because they came out 1st, but 590 may prove just as good or better.

Anyhow, since there are always holly wars going about which card is better I figure I'll make this dedicated thread to keep the battle of RED vs GREEN here instead of all over the forum.

Anandtech has it like this:


1 dB idle noise differnce:

7 dB differnce between 590 stock vs 6990 stock.
2 dB differnce between 590 OC vs 6990 OC.

*** part of this is probably because its fan is working harder, to keep the card cooler, the 590 gets hotter during gameplay than the 6990.

590 blows some of the hot air into the case, or atleast more than the 6990 does,
you can see the Harddisks (to the right of the pic) are hotter with the 590.

Remember back when so many IMB had all those hard disks that died? that was because of a chip
on the HDD getting to hot.

Ahh so now performance is all about how quiet a card is?

I missed that memo! Hotter, slower, more expensive BUT quieter.

Well its certainly not about physX, 3d, or heavy tessellation games. Its not about the single gpu crown, thats not AMD's goal. Its not about staying under 300 watts anymore either ! Or wanting a warranty !

It has turned into Bizarro world around here. AMD fans going, "Performance at all costs", and nVidia fans going, "But it's quieter". LOL Unless ypu are going to quad fire/SLI or put them under water (or both) they make no real sense.

Odd no one has mentioned the reviewers that had 590 cards die on them... Id have thought someone would have made a jibb at it.

Performance wise it seems like a wash in the general sense, but one or the other depending on specific games. Heat is also a wash, but Noise levels are better on the 590.

These 2 cards are about as even as you can get. Pick the specific thing you prefer most, then you'll be able to choose which one to have. I'm not interested in dual GPU cards, for a variety of reasons(mostly Price), but if I were to go for one I'd go for the 5890, because it is the Double Precision King.

Apparently, you can make them even quieter by increasing the voltage a bit.

How is somebody gonna ship the items to you if you don't give them your name, address, etc. How they gonna let you know it's on the way if they don't have your email addy?
