They didn't have to.

My understanding is that the iPhone falls under their existing data plans (plus free hotspot tethering). So if you go to the iPhone 4 page and hit the plans, you get the same prices as their other devices.

If I can pool minutes with my existing family plan and only pay $30 a month...I might bite. As lame as no talk/surf is (something I use just about daily) it'd be nice to have one device and to have the newer iPhone 4.

So now the question is: will the iPhone 5 be released to Verizon in June?

I would hope so, and I would also hope it's just one model with both chipsets.

Looks like I'll be sticking with AT&T

I read the entire liveblog on Engadget and I looked through everything and as near as I can tell a lot of the numbers in the Verizon column of that image are made up.

The cell phone plan pricing is estimated - based on current Verizon smart phones - which may or may not be accurate. And the battery numbers are extrapolated from the GSM iPhone... which is a pretty ridiculous thing to do... it's a totally different chipset from a different company (Qualcomm instead of Infineon) and they are just pulling the numbers over and crossing out the "2G" row? I don't think so. Verizon said nothing about battery life and using numbers from an Infineon HSPA/GSM chip as the basis for numbers for a Qualcomm CDMA chip is misleading.

But knowing Apple. They'll put the battery life pretty close to the GSM iPhone.

Which is why they put ?'s on the pricing plans.

I just bought an iPhone 4 a couple weeks ago, so I'm debating whether to keep or return it within the 30 day period. So far I haven't had any reception problems in the city I live in (where I am 95% of the time), but occasionally get no signal when I'm out driving on the interstate. On the other hand, I might be wrong but I believe Verizon doesn't offer rollover minutes. I guess it comes down to which company will have the faster network for data for me. I'm getting about 1.3 down/.9 up with ATT.

Ok.. so I re-cant on my previous statements.. I guess the hotspot is still tied to a tethering fee, but instead of only being able to tether to one computer, you can just use it as a wireless hotspot.

I'm sure this is going to be coming to AT&T soon.

I don't think that Apple will "put" the battery life anywhere - they are probably using the same iPhone 4 battery and they'll take the numbers that they get with the Qualcomm CDMA chip and I think it's misleading to extrapolate power numbers from HSPA over to CDMA. Based on previous data, CDMA should be more power efficient. About the only thing that I think is likely is the power numbers will almost certainly better than the AT&T iPhone 4.

And while I agree that they put "?" after the numbers, they still awarded "winners" and "losers" in the columns... So it reads to me "these numbers are guesses, but AT&T wins".

Were you expecting a Verizon iPhone5?

No, but I was expecting to see at least some new feature that would convince me to upgrade.

Hell, it looks like they didn't even bother putting a conformal coating on the exterior antenna to fix the "grip of death" reception issues that they have with the GSM version of the phone.

Why would you have expected that? This is a carrier announcement. When Vodaphone or Orange got the iPhone were there new features in the iPhone that they got?

I don't understand all this hype over an iPhone that is over halfway through its design cycle and can't be jailbroken to be used on any GSM network. Granted, I've never had any major issues with AT&T but still, other than when I was in Ithaca, NY visiting some friends. I've never ran into a situation where I didn't have reception and my VZW buddies did. The vast majority of the time, when I don't have any bars, they don't.

Exactly. It's just an announcement that if you are on Verizon and want an iPhone you now have that option. I don't think it's going to be a mass exodus like when AT&T first got the iPhone.

Verizon publishes an iPhone 4 FAQ:

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...quently_asked_iphone_4_related_questions.html

Pricing

1. Are there minimum service and data pricing requirements?

Yes, iPhone customers will need to choose from any of the current Nationwide plans. Customers will also be required to activate a data package, pricing will be announced at a later date.

That's not sounding like $30 unlimited, lol...

The two deal breakers are that I cant make a wifi hotspot and keep it running while i get a call. The second is that I can't travel well with this phone

re: so what happens to all devices if you get a call ? - All get dropped.

That was why I came to this thread...

I see alot of people making a huge deal about this and alot of uninformed people saying "RIP AT&T..." I'm trying to see what the big deal is.

Wifi hotspot included is pretty amazing, I mean... it should be standard w\ the iphone anyhow. I can get mywi on my phone if I wanted, and if I only went on the internet and checked email at home I could even just use that and cancel my internet service...

What are the real benefits here? How many people would actually switch from AT&T to verizon?> It seems like way too much of a hassle to do that, so I don't see why all these people are posting stuff like RIP AT&T as if this means anything.

Exactly, plus there are a lot of people on AT&T that say they came from Verizon but they couldn't deal with it because they had no signal. It's another carrier, yes it's a big deal for Apple, but no it's not a big deal for AT&T because most of the people who get iPhones on Verizon are going to be people already on Verizon.

Tempting but with it being this close to a new iPhone it's hard to justify pulling the trigger now. I'm really tired of Sprint but I think I would be really pissed at myself getting the 4 with the 5 less that six months away. Especially with VZW doing away with yearly upgrades.

Well, that's just stupid if they do that. I'm not switching to Verizon, at least not for another year... but if they don't offer unlimited, most of the people so ready to jump ship are going to stay planted on AT&T.

They aren't going to offer unlimited. I think the only reason they aren't lowering the tiers like AT&T did is they are splitting the load across two networks. When they go completely LTE I fully expect tiers.

The really nice thing about this is that we now have choice. We can choose the advantages of either AT&T or Verizon while keeping in mind the limitations of both.
