If you want to upgrade and you're holding off, head to Verizon's website quick: you can upgrade your phone and keep your unlimited plan right now. This happened a few weeks ago and it looks like the issue has returned.

More details: http://www.droid-life.com/2013/10/2...mited-data-keeping-extravaganza-part-2-begun/

Update: They appeared to have patched the “software glitch” again. Party is over, folks.

Don't let Engadget know ("we've reached out to Verizon for comment") this time!

Seems to be "fixed" already. I just tried it and was asked to select a new data plan.

I was thinking of upgrading another line which would kill my unlimited (data only on the main line). I'm on a grandfathered plan of $50+$10 each additional line and $30 for unlimited data = $100/mo. for 3 phones.

If you do the new plan, it's $170 for 3 phones & 2GB of data. W_T_F Verizon?!

1st comment summed up my thoughts:

They upheld them all the last time this happened.

Honestly, if it happens again I say go for it. Worst case scenario they tell you that you need a new plan when you go to activate the new phone and then you just promptly return it.

Damn. I would have probably done it. Did my wife's on the last one and skipped mine as I really didn't want another contract for the phones available. But in hindsight locking into unlimited would have been worth it by itself. Oh well. If it ever hits again someone shoot me a PM.

How many accounts do have? If you have another account with limited or no data on it, you can switch your upgrade to the other account, get your phone, then activate it on your number. That's how I get around it

^ hmm

I do have a dumbphone with an available upgrade on the account but they are thinking about getting a smart phone so I dont want to eat their upgrade.

But your saying I can just use their upgrade and then when they want to upgrade they can transfer my upgrade to that line and Id get to keep unlimited?

Yep:

1) Log into verizonwireless.com
2) There's an option to transfer your upgrade to another account- do it.
3) Upgrade your phone (if it's a dumb phone, you'll have to choose a dataplan---that's OK. Just choose the cheapest one).
4) Complete the upgrade.
5) When finished, change your plan back to no data (if necessary).
6) When your new phone arrives, activate it on YOUR number.

All done. You keep your data plan, you have no extra charges, and everyone's happy.

I have an upgrade on my unlimited data, and the dumbphone has an upgrade available as well so I cannot transfer the upgrade currently.

But your saying, upgrade through the dumb phone and when I get the phone just activate it on my line? Or activate it on the dumbphones number then switch it over to my line?

Then if that person with the dumbphone wants to upgrade they can just transfer the upgrade from my line?

If that's the case, you can just upgrade your dumbphone, choose a dataplan for the dumbphone, finish the upgrade, revert your dumbphone plan back to no data, and then activate the new phone on your account. You can freely transfer upgrades between accounts.

^ Sweet I had no idea about that.

When you say "Finish the upgrade" you mean activate it on the dumbphones line first? or after I checkout and put the order it switch the dumbphone back to no data?

No, you have to pick a dataplan when you upgrade a dumbphone to a smartphone. After you get everything ordered, change the plan back to no data.

Then when the phone arrives, simply activate the phone on your number.
