Hah, I had mine up until two years ago during a move. It had Photoshop 4 and Windows 98SE & Plus! with some random files on it. Gotta love those parallel port burners that would buffer underrun and ruin a $20 disc if you so much as exhaled on the mouse.

lol I remember dialup in the 90's. man it sucked. downloading porn? pfft being "finished' before the picture even loaded.. yeah good times.

i used to sit on IRC all the time. I would get on a few Warez channels and troll a few others. I loved going to channels like "dad daughter sex", "incest" etc. and get pictures off oggrish.com rename them and offer them via dcc. good times.

one of the first pirated games i got was diablo (I did buy it though! lol). i started the download and went to bed. it wasn't finished when i got up...

oh and 56k dialup? blew me the fuck away.

I had a few cds like that. Everything was super-compressed zipped or in .rar format.

In 1997, a friend of mine lived with his grandparents...he was fortunate enough to have a decent Pentium system with a Time Warner cable modem (one way that required a 28.8-56k modem for uploads and sending requests). Prior to knowing him, I was stuck downloading from home or using the T1 from the computer shop I was moonlighting in to download stuff when I had slack time. Astalavista.box.sk or mIRC were the best in those days for getting what you wanted.

I worked for a large integrator and reseller back in the 90s and we got great discounts on all sorts of things, ranging from software (especially MS stuff) to hardware from certain vendors. I bought a Creative CD burner kit (burner, software, and I think it came with a SCSI card) for $200 or $250 in 97 or 98. It ended up being a great piece of hardware and I burned a ton of discs with it. Believe it or not, I still have it installed in a Pentium Pro system sitting in my garage. I bet I could fire it up and burn a CD with it today.

I still have the original Vicmodem (the one pictured above) and its box and the software on cassette.

I think that my first CD-R was a mix CD of 90's REM and U2 songs, that I did with my snazzy new HP 4X SCSI CD burner. The SCSI burners were more reliable back then, as they seemed to have less issues with buffer underrun.

This was a prized addition to my Dell Dimension P75 back in the day

EDIT: I think that I found the manual for that old beast! Love the guy in the Hawaiian shirt!

They sure were. The scsi card did all the heavy lifting and allowed the anemic pentium or amd 586 processors to handle just running the OS.

I love these nostalgia threads. My first modem was a 14.4 that I paid $200 for. I got most of the money by selling my old Apple IIe computer. lol Wasn't there some hardware/software gimmick that modems claimed they could double your speed?

Well, 56k had compression but there were bonded modems you could buy that combined two lines for double the throughput

There were two different types of 56k modems. 56k X2 and 56k Flex. I don't recall which was better, but I think 3com or us robotics had the X2.

did scour actually exist before Napster?

both scour CuteMX and WinMX were vastly superior to Napster as they let you share anything not just music

I managed to bring down my entire college network using WinMX
they didn't think that was as funny as I did
I think scour existed for at least a year before Napster came out. If I recall correctly, scour transformed into scour something or other around the time Napster became known.

I still remember the first time I was introduced to an MP3. I think it was via ICQ - someone mentioned something or other about compressed songs. I said that it wasn't that big of a deal - they had been out for a long time - I thought they were talking about midi files. One was transferred to me, and my jaw dropped.

The very first CD I burned.... couldnt be read by the exact same drive that burned it. Hated the F#%YT#$ hell out of optical discs ever since. Even today I still get brand new discs that dont work in some drives. It's a sick joke... I wish those things would just go away. I wish Redbox had a USB port and you could just pop in your own thumb drive... it's not like they do not have the technology or the software expertise to make files that are only good for 24/48 hours.

They could just rent the movies on USB drives. No need to provide your own, just return the drive just like you return the discs. I expect they will eventually move to that model if physical media lasts that long. Lots of software providers are doing it instead of discs anyways.

yeah that'll go real well until the USB drives start being returned with rootkits and other assorted goodies.
