I take back what I said earlier. The Creative drivers did not load properly. I don't get any sound now.

Does anyone know how to disable the driver signing check in Vista? I think this is what I need to do in order to get my driver to load correctly.

Too bad the newest build still has a problem with my new system and no one seems to have a solution. ASRock was no help with the motherboard so I ended up exchanging emails with someone whose english was not his first language and I couldnt decphier what he was telling me other than he had same problem. My testing has shown that my ATI PCIe card isnt reconized properly and it causing massive slowdowns on graphics. I have managed to get around this by logging on and with shortcut on the desktop to the device manager use it and uninstall the video card driver and then do scan for new hardware and after i reinstalls the driver the system is fine til I reboot system then I have to go thru the same process. The ATI RCI driver doesnt install properly so thats no help. I have an another system AMD 2500XP and it has no problems with install but it has a AGP card. Anyone using the ASRock 775Dual-VSTA with a PCIe card preferrably ATI that not having a problem or found a soultion to my problem?

Hello

i did not quite understand microsoft's release process. they seem to have two concurrent releases with RTM and RC builds being released almost simultaneously. doesn't an RTM follow an RC?

i thought RC1(build 5600) would be the final version before the release to public?

There are multiple release candidates produced until they get a build that can be shipped.

Technically, 5728 is not a release candidate. It is from the RTM tree, first of all, and second, it did not have the same amount of work done on it that 5600 did.

thanks for the reply

i thought the RTM (release to manufacture) would follow the RC. what purpose does the RTM tree serve?

The RTM tree is the road to RTM. Each build released from that tree has additional bugfixes.

if the RTM tree is the road to RTM, then what and how does the RC feed into the RTM?

i thought RC1 was stable and good enough to be an RTM?

Well RC==Release Candidate. So it is supposed to be stable enough (and IMO, RC1 is), but it typically is not quite polished. Much of the work going on now is Fit and Finish, which is basically fixing all the little issues, most of them related to the UI.

As to how RC1 feeds into RTM, the first build from the RTM tree (57xx) was essentially RC1.

thanks for the reply

if RTM (57xx) which was essentially RC1 is being developed as the final RTM release which we will see, then RTM should be a superset of RC1?, correct?

I guess you could say that. There's really no distinction between the builds that come out of the RC1 tree or the RTM tree. Fixes are checked into the tree, and a build is released pretty much every day. The next day's build is the previous day's build plus fixes.

i read some place that the 5600 (RC1) build is newer than some of the 57xx builds (RTM's), that is what confuses me, that we have an RC1 build which is newer than the RTM build's, and even the RTM build's are being released.

should there not be one RTM build, the one that is the "master gold" which is burnt onto the disks and shipped out?

I have a Dell XPS m1210 laptop.

Problem: USB 2.0 drive only transfers at ~65kb/s!! Wants to take over 30hrs to transfer 20gb from my external HD to new laptop (VISTA RC 1), but in XP this takes about 12min...

any ideas? Seems that I have all possible drivers installed.

Thanks!

Anyone gotten an All-in-Wonder 9700 to work with 64-bit Vista?

The beta2 and RC1 drivers do not work for me AT ALL, as in they won't even get the video card out of standard VGA mode so that I can use 1920x1440 instead of 1280x1024, or turn on the TV output.

The beta 5270 drivers at least recognized the card and let me use whatever resolution I want, but the TV tuner wouldn't work.

Wondering if anyone has had any more success with this, and how.

There are no drivers for my logitech webcam, my HP Laserjet 1012, or my UMAX Astra 3450 scanner either. (the software that comes with it is ironically named VistaScan!)

A very different experience from the article posted today.

Try,
click on the start button, type RUN, then bcdedit /set no integritycheck ON

My usb 2.0 rates in my Compaq N610C and E1405 are getting around 13mb/s with a 60gb external ide case. Did you do an upgrade or clean install? Mine were based on a clean install

Trader05 - Yup, did a clean install. I figured out that transfer rates between internal HD's partitions were also really low....wtf is going on?? I reinstalled XP and transfer rates are literally 200x faster

thanks!

Microsoft will ship the final prerelease version of Windows Vista on Friday and, unexpectedly, will name the new version Release Candidate 2 (RC2). (Microsoft had stated earlier that it wouldn't ship an RC2 milestone release of Vista.) But don't let the name fool you. RC2 is really just a standard interim build of Vista, but unlike RC1, it won't be distributed to millions of users.

The RC2 build is 5743, and Micro-soft is currently testing it internally. As with the previous interim build, 5728, RC2 will go to beta testers, Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and TechNet subscribers, and a random, limited number of Consumer Preview Program (CPP) members.

Although Microsoft wouldn't confirm the specifics of the release, the company did corroborate that it's planning an upcoming interim Vista build. "As we have previously discussed, Microsoft does plan to deliver more interim builds of Windows Vista before releasing the final product," a Microsoft spokesperson told me. "The exact name of the build and the date of its release have not been announced."

This is the last build Microsoft will be making available to the public prior to release to manufacturing (RTM). The RTM--which had been expected to be "on or before October 25"--has been adjusted slightly. Now, the Vista launch window begins October 18, when Microsoft will begin testing the final planned build for RTM. But Microsoft doesn't expect to finalize the product until sometime between October 25 and November 8.

Internal documentation notes that each daily delay after October 25 comes at a price, however: For each day past October 25, Micro-soft will ship one less localized, language-specific version of Vista for the January launch. However, the company is prepared to do that to ensure that Vista's quality is high.

The internal documentation also notes that Vista still has more than 1400 bugs. Microsoft's internal processes require this bug count to drop to 500 or fewer before the product can go into escrow for RTM. By comparison, Vista had more than 2470 bugs on September 22.

In related news, Microsoft will be changing the product keys it uses for Vista after the product hits the RTM escrow phase. Consequently, users won't be able to use prerelease Vista product keys to install the RTM version. My understanding is that this change won't affect the RC2 release

Update: Since this article was first written, Micro-soft has had to advance the RC2 build to 5744.16384.061003-1945. The company still plans to ship RC2 to testers on Friday.
.........................
So if you want a shot at downloading 5744, an O/S with only 500 bugs, then you will literally have to check the vista d/l page hour by hour - today - lol
