Microsoft is ridiculous. They are going to penalize small language groups if they don't launch as scheduled?! That just sounds stupid.

Further, a bug count of 500 is acceptable? How many quick, unsecure 'fixes' are going to knock out 1000 bugs? Shoddy coding.

Wordperfect 6 had over 60,000 bugs.

500 for an OS would be unbelievably good.

Well, 1,070 bugs fixed in 2 weeks is pretty impressive

Of course, this all has to be put in to perspective. Lots of stuff has THOUSANDS of errata.

I'm still not excited about Vista.

Having a little permission issues:

I've Windows XP Pro SP2 installed on C: and Vista RC2 Build 5744 on E: (the cdrom takes D. This is on a Dell 700m laptop. I also have Vista RC1 installed on my desktop.

Laptop permission problem. When I tried to access My Documents of any user (except All Users) from the XP C:\ drive, I get a dialog that says I don't have permission to use it. I've to manually take ownership of the folder C:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName\My Documents. This allows me to open My Documents. However, all files and subfolders are NOT owned. I would have to set manually to probably a few hundred files and tens of folders which is rather ridiculous. Note: The My Documents are NOT set to "private".

The desktop works fine. I can access ALL folders and files including those in C:\Documents and Settings\. Don't know why this one work fine.

Is there a way to take ownership of the C:\Documents and Settings\MyUserName\My Documents so that it applies to ALL files and subfolders within it?

Anyone know what Vista is doing to make my harddrive spin all the time? I turned off indexing, and yet it sounds like it is just constantly scanning it. I don't have any sort of problem like this in XP Home.

No virus scanner, either.

I am assuming you are taking ownership in Vista, Correct...

After you have the folder properties on the screen, at the bottom right there is a button " Advanced " for special permissions or advanced settings. Select that. It will open a new window with 4 tabs select the one labled owner. On that tab will be a button called Edit, select it. Down in the bottom left corner will be a check block for " Replace owner on subcontainers and objects ". check that and you should be good to go.

is there a way to disable "estimated time remaining" when transferring files? seems like this is severly lagging my file transfer speed as it's always recalculating the time left every few seconds. This is Vista RC2

thanks!

How much RAM do you have?

1GB with Vista is almost like 256MB with XP.
So expect to be swapping to virtual memory a lot.

I've gone through this thread, but still have been unsuccessful in getting my Creative Labs XFi to work in the new Windows Vista 64Bit RC2.

Can anyone help me out? I have no clue how to get it working.

5744 seems to be faster than previous builds, not gaming just quite snappy all around. Anyone else noticed it? Gaming benchs are a few % faster too. Installed without any problems and everything works. Says Java is incompatable but it seems to work anyway.
Very nice.

I did a couple of things to get my audigy2 working with 5.1 sound. The last being to use f8 at startup to disable driver checking.

It could possibly be the Volume Shadow Copy (aka System Protection aka System Restore) working. It's usually not a problem though since as soon as you do something that actually uses the harddrive, VSC flips itself off until you're done.

Is the thrashing lagging the system? It might some kind of bug...

BTW, I'd advise just leave indexing on. It's the reason the new Start Menu is worth using (hurray for keyboard oriented). It won't do a crazy scan after the first one and it doesn't index _that_ much anyways (certainly not the entire drive unless you tell it to). And since the indexed search function actually works now, indexing is no longer a worthless waste of resources.

When expires, how do I get my data out? Hook up to another computer as a slave drive? Will I have an option upgrading to the official release version?

Ok, I have two partitions (on the same physical drive). I installed Vista RC2 on the first partition. Everything is fine in RC2 with exception to lack of drivers support.

Now I want to install Windows XP on the 2nd partition. Do a boot off the CD and I get an error that I cannot pass even after subsequent reboots. Message to the effect that there have been a hardware change, windows had to be shut down to prevent damage. I have booted with this particular CD in the past with no problem.

In retrospect I should have installed XP first prior to installing RC2. Right now I have a copy of RC2 but no way of getting XP on.

I'm willing to wipe everything clean and start over again, but I can't do that because my system will not let me boot off the XP CD which has the proper utilities.

Any recommendations?

How about trying to boot the VistaDVD and kill the Vista partition than reboot with the XP CD/format/installXP/install Vista

That's what I'm going try next when I get home. I just didn't remember if there was a utility in Vista boot to delete partitions.

Thanx

EDIT: Found out that my USB card reader was giving the problem. Unplugged it from the motherboard and the setup went on without a hitch. Re-plugging it back after XP install was a PITA considering how much room I had to work with, but at least it worked.

Creative today (October 12) has new Vista X-Fi beta drivers, 2.00.1111

Here.

They have it for both the 32-bit and 64-bit flavors.

I actually had to set 5.1 from within the Creative Audio Console to get 5.1 sound...choosing 5.1 in the Windows speaker settings didn't change anything for me.

Hello

in the wiki for Kernel Mode Driver Framework, i came across the following

In general, because more features like Power Management and Plug and Play are handled by the framework, a WDF driver will be less complicated and have less code than an equivalent WDM driver.

does this mean that there is no PnP and ACPI driver in windows vista, but the KMDF framework somehow handles PnP and power management?
