Both versions of Vista (x32 and x64) arrived today with my Action Pack. (after I went through all that trouble to download it when it came out)

Wow, i think somebody else should have started this thread, since the OP doesn't seem like he's updating it at all.

Anyways, i think i'm about to give up Vista atm... i love the OS, and can't wait until it's finally released, but i can't get the bluetooth in my laptop (iXPS2) to work correctly, and i need that. More than likely i'll be back though, it's been great. It's been more stable for me than XP has, and i've been trying all sorts of software that aren't working.

I have been trying to figure out how to download the 5474 build. I have Vista Beta 2 and haven't updated it with new builds because I don't know how to do that. Can someone point me to a link that will give a step by step. Google can't find the information I need. Thanks.

You can't get the new build unless you have a Connect or MSDN subscription, which you or your company must pay for.

Replace can't with aren't supposed to and that statement would be fully accurate.

anyone able to do anything at all in the user section of the control panel? I can't change my password, change the pics, change the account type (even tried in safe mode loggin on as admin) I can't add users either. I know Vista is beta but I'm wondering if I have something set wrong.

Well I pulled the July vista off of MSDN last week.

I installed it on the spare PC.

AMD AthlonXP 3200+
2.5GB DDR400 Ram (cas2)
ATI X1600 Pro 512MB
10KRPM WD HD
SB Live 5.1

So far everything seems to work but the sound. I can't make the sound work for anything.

Vista says this system rates at 4 on the "experience" scale. All the 3D works. The OS IDLES at 500MB. Playing BF2 put memory useage almost to 2GB. Game performance was of course not as good as with XP.

my boss tried it out and he couldn't even get the wireless network to work (and it worked on XP). talk about a regression.

i dont really see any reason to switch from XP. anyone?

This is a BETA. It is NOT a complete product.

I don't have that game, but I've gotten Command & Conquer Generals to work in it. I'm even running it at 1920x1200 on my laptop. The game doesn't natively support that resolution, but you can edit the config file and enter that resolution. I've noticed some weird terrain texture issues with the game though (where there's elevation in the terrain you see these strange triangles and its very difficult to tell where the paths are), but it may very well be a drive problem.

From what I've read, RC1 is supposed to be released around the end of this month or early september. I for one can't wait until it's released. I'm really interested to see the improvements that have been made since Beta 2. Since i use Beta 2 pretty much every day as the main OS on my laptop, I'm quite familiar with how "well" it performs

But, I was curious to know, can anyone with Build 5472 tell me how well, if at all, the Media Center functionality and performance has improved since Beta 2? In Beta it's pretty bad. I can barely play a dvd without it stuttering, so I'm curious to see how the performance has improved in RC1 as well. Just want to try to get a comparison on it.

I haven't tried Vista yet myself, but as someone said earlier it seems as though its getting annoyingly nannyish, like preventing access to the program files and windows/system32 folders etc.

Wouldn't a simple solution be to have options describing you/someone's windows experience/tech knowledge when creating new accounts?

I'm also pretty interested to see if there are any improvements to Media Center.

I can't even play DVDs at all, and I can't view premium channels such as HBO.

People who think they are computer experts get hacked all the time.

So the only way to really determine a user's skill would be to make them take a comprehensive quiz of some sort before they can use their computer. Not going to happen.
