At least the Audigy drivers work without and problems that I can tell.
That's what you think. CMSS and EAX don't work.

@ Virge and Stash

thank you for your input. things are getting a little clearer

Not to argue, but I think we should differentiate here the dif between INSTALLING and ACTIVATING online or by phone.

Quote:

How do I install Vista?
Bundled with your copy of Vista should have come a .nfo file. Open this file with notepad. In this file you should find the key for your build, copy this onto your clipboard. Insert your Vista DVD (or mount the ISO). When given the option FRESH INSTALL, DO NOT UPGRADE. When prompted for the CD-Key, paste (Ctrl+V) your key. When prompted for the location to install to, make sure you install to a separate partition of at least 6GB+ in size. For more info on partitions, see the advanced section of FAQ. You can also install to a separate hard drive (once again, see the advanced section of FAQ).

What is this "Activation" thing?
Microsoft requires that you activate your copy of vista after 16 days use. This is to prevent piracy and illegal distribution of Vista. If you are using 5219 or above, the key you installed with is legitimate and you can thus activate your copy of Vista. That key has been blacklisted. Otherwise you must use antiwpa to continue using Vista. Msbetas does not advocate, support, or help distribute antiwpa cracks, and it is up to you to find one.

Activation ? I think the servers are getting bombarded 24/7, because online activation failed repeatedly. I used the phone method which was simple and automated; took about 5 minutes. According to the Vista Beta email, the product key can be activated 10 times.

-------------------

Note that the ser can be activated ten times by ORIGINAL USER ONLY (AFAIK), since I know people who have tried to use other folks keys and they dont activate. I assume they use HW hash. And while I have never done it, I have seen posted that the activation string is 42 segments as opposed to 25 for serial key. But I need this verified, maybe it just activates with registry changes.

And also note that they say its to prevent piracy - but of what??? A buggy incomplete friggin beta??? Get my drift?

-----------------------
Edit: See here on the VMWARE Vista page, there is a hardware sum that if changed causes reactivation alert EVEN on the virtual machine:
http://tinyurl.com/qdzae
Product Activation
The Windows Vista product activation feature creates a numerical key based on the virtual hardware in the virtual machine where it is installed. Changes in the configuration of the virtual machine might require you to reactivate the operating system. There are some steps you can take to minimize the number of significant changes.
?

Set the final memory size for your virtual machine before you activate Windows Vista. When you cross certain thresholds?approximately 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and 1GB?the product activation feature sees the changes as significant.
Note

The size reported to the Windows product activation feature is slightly less than the actual amount configured for the virtual machine. For example, 128MB is interpreted as falling in the 64MB?127MB range.
?

Install VMware Tools before you activate Windows Vista. When the SVGA driver in the VMware Tools package is installed, it activates features in the virtual graphics adapter that make it appear to Windows Vista as a new graphics adapter.
?

If you want to experiment with any other aspects of the virtual machine configuration, do so before activating Windows Vista. Keep in mind that typically you have 14 days for experimentation before you have to activate the operating system. (Your EULA might define a different period before activation is required.)

Okay, so I'm not the only one who doesn't get EAX in Vista (beta 2) with my Audigy 2 ZS. That's somewhat good to know. I'd be fine with EAX 2.0 support for now.

how did you get the original key? by email? in the download?
did you install with key or no key?
did they give you authorization number? how big was it? New/dif serial, or same?

thnx in advance

Warcraft 3 is really slow with the Nvidia drivers installed. I had to swtich to Opengl mode for it to work. Alternative media players like Media Player Classic and Zoom Player won't work right.

I rolled back my drivers to the certified Nvidia that is included with Vista. Everything works correctly now. No slowdown in WC3 and video players are running flawlessly.

I'm guessing you realize that NV has separate Vista drivers - 93.66 BETA's for now, and are not talking about the new WHQL XP drivers issued yesterday.
I have heard of issues with the bet's.

I do have a passport ID, but im not an official beta tester. I did download a prior beta and received my serial by email (which I lost).
I used no id to activate 5536 and no prior serial. When i called, the rep asked that i read the long activation string of numbers back to him, he then read me the new activation string. No serial was given.
Its a fairly typical situation as if XP asked for phone activation because of too many installs or hardware changes.

This version is not stable on my machine. Random bluescreens reboots. They are few and far between.
Only firefox, Imgburn, Power Dvd, Capture NX, Aim 5.9 and Shrink installed. Firefox or Aim is the problem I believe.

thnx jmagg that helps a lot
looks like ymmv depending on rep you get

and just to clarify, 5552 came out 18 HOURS after 5536, so they must have found SOMETHING important to redo. What day you downloaded determined what vers you got. Perhaps if you wound up with 5552 you wouldnt have bluescreens.

however, I would bet RC1 will fix your prob.

Bozo , I'm not sure I get what you're asking. Anyone can install a Vista beta(there's plenty of keys floating around), it's activation we're talking about. Unless a key is blacklisted, all the beta keys are the same, phoning MS won't make your beta last any longer.

RC1 has BSOD'd on me twice now, although that was when changing sound options so could be related to Creatives crappy drivers (Audigy 2 ZS here).

Still Vista should at least be able to protect itself against badly written drivers and fail gracefully.

I've got a request for anyone with RC1.

Grab a large executable such as a game demo or patch(something at least 200MB), and tell me how long it takes to start that application up. I've installed FEAR and BF2142 on my RC1 box today, and it's taking an awfully long time, I think UAC is checksuming all executables before running it, even self-executing compressed items.

Before I installed RC1, I made sure that all of my hardware had beta drivers for Vista ... or so I thought. It turns out that the trust rusty Radeon 7000 VE that I have been using for displays 3 and 4 doesn't actually have Vista drivers (I think because there never were any DX9 drivers for this old junker).

Well, before I drop $50 on a new second video card, I want to know which cards work w/ Vista and all the Aero stuff as a secondary display.

Also, if I were to go the SLI route, would that give me 4x DVI ?

With two cards installed but SLI not enabled, you are able to use all four DVI connectors. When in SLI mode, however, two of the DVI connectors are disabled (I don't have SLI personally, so I'm not sure if both are on one card, or if you lose one on each card).

At the risk of sounding ignorant...am I missing something? I don't believe RC1 is public yet...where are most of you getting it from? Is it only for MSN suscribers at the moment? I participated in the open BETA 2 but I haven't gotten anything about RC1 yet.

Some of us are beta testers that got it first-thing on Friday. Others are getting it through illegal means as it hasn't been released to the public yet.

Ah, I see. That's great. I was afraid it wouldn't be released to the public at all.

I shall eagerly await public release. I even have a 30GB partition ready on my secondary HDD for it.
