It's been my experience that the boot files for Windows 2000 , XP have to reside on a HD partition C:. There are 3 boot files I think. NTDETECT.COM , NTLDR , and BOOT.INI . Don't know about VIsta though - the documentation is incomplete.

Not sure what happened, all i can figure is that it put both optical and 4 usb devices b4 the hdd.

Anyway, it works!

Vista trial expired?

How long do the trials last? I got a window saying I needed to buy windows, but that's obviously and issue.

For people with Audigy driver issues on x64, someone on the Creative forums said that he got audio working by installing the Vista beta drivers then installing the XP x64 drivers over top of them. He even claimed to get 5.1 audio by using the Audio Console. I can't verify this myself yet, which brings me to my next point...

Okay, I want to install Vista x64. I have Windows XP 32-bit (so I can't run Setup.exe from a virtual drive), but don't have a DVD burner. I extracted the Vista DVD ISO to my Zen Vision:M (in UMS mode), thinking that I could boot off it to install the beta but it doesn't work. Is there a way to "burn" the Vista ISO to the Zen so that it will boot? Barring that, is there another way to install Vista, perhaps by booting to a command prompt? I read about something called WinPE, but can't seem to find a download.

Thanks, and good luck.

Like many others- I had a great deal of trouble with the ISO. I only got Vista to install once I purchased the DVD. So I wouldn't recommend any far flung techniques with the ISO. Anyhow, DVD drives don't cost all that much- try eBay?

The Creative drivers do not work in Vista-64. So I'm back to my motherboard's sound system for now.

OK, thanks. I've seen DVD burners on Newegg for just over $30. I need to replace my dead CD-RW, so I'll be looking more into those.

Sorry you couldn't get the Audigy drivers working. There might be more info on how the guy did it on the Creative forums.

The only issue that I've come across with Vista32 is the combination of my G15 keyboard and Razer Copperhead mouse. Basically, they worked during the install, but after installing Office and rebooting, neither one would work.

To fix the issue, I turned off the computer and plugged in an old MS mouse. Booted into Vista and everything was fine. Went into device manager to find that I had 3 HID devices under keyboards. I appears that the G15 causes Vista to install itself multiple times. I deleted all the device entries and the G15 stopped responding. Plug in the Razer mouse and it was recognized and worked, then finally plugged in the G15. Everything is working again, but I'm not sure what will happen once I reboot.

Well, I formatted my Vista partition and I'm trying to get of that boot menu when I boot up the computer. I searched here and people say to run the XP Recovery Console and run fixmbr but that doesn't seem to get rid of it for me. Any suggestions?

I forgot to complete my Vista download. It is running now though. Does that mean I will not be able to get a key for it?

You also need to run fixboot in addition to fixmbr.

If you haven't manually forced Vista windows update, recommend you do so. One of the critical updates addresses the problem noted with the OS activation being a problem under certain circumstances.

I am starting to think the same thing. We need to find someone who install it and then said "forget it" Please let me know if you are one of those people.

Not sure how many of you are interested or not, but yesterday when I found out that VMware Server was free, I downloaded and installed it on my laptop (I'm dual booting it with XP and Vista Beta 2) on my Vista installation. VMware Server installs fine, but it takes a LOOOOOONG time to install (It felt like it took half an hour). Anyway, I ran the Kubuntu 6.06 DVD I downloaded yesterday afternoon in a virtual machine and it actually ran pretty well. Here's a screen shot I took about half an hour ago (I'm still at work, and I'm bored lol). Oh yeah, the resolution is 1920x1200 since thats my laptop's resolution. It won't be resized lol:

does anyone else thinks vista is gonna blow? it doesnt really add any new compelling features other than gui changes that make it look like an apple. they stripped away the new file system they were working on (Win fs?) which was a very cool feature (and they have actually DISBANDED the team that was working on it). all in all i'm very disappointed.

my boss tried it out and he couldn't even get the wireless network to work (and it worked on XP). talk about a regression.

i dont really see any reason to switch from XP. anyone?

All versions of Vista are client versions. Longhorn server (which will probably be called Windows Server 2007 or 2008) will be the server product.

I'm more optimistic about it. It looks like they are actually adding new stuff under the hood now versus building up a new skin over a Win3.1/Win95/WinNT base. Stuff that is long overdue but nevertheless exciting like newer color management and audio subsystems. In the past I feel they used hacks to make older code compatible with a new OS, but now they are restructuring it all to work much better and creating a new base upon which the OS can operate. I have faith they will make it a lot better than the past Windows versions. The only thing that worries me is how performance is affected by all this: for the worse or for the better?

What isn't appealing to me is all the stuff that targets 'new users'. What about us old-timers/power users? I do not want files hidden, parental control, etc. I feel there needs to be a version for more experienced users, if nothing else to save them some frustration or the sense they're losing control over their PC. It does irk people and they don't realize it. I don't care if I don't need to edit or even see the files, I just don't like that stuff is being hidden from me by default (among lots of other things like the MS Agent character in Search...argh).
